AboutStadiumSTADIUM is an EU co-funded project and stands for Smart Transport Applications Designed for large events with Impacts on Urban Mobility. STADIUM aims at improving the performance of transport services for large events hosted by big cities with the following objectives:• To produce an interactive tool (a “manual”) to support local

authorities in the planning and management of transport services for large events.

• To demonstrate ITS applications (Intelligent Transport Systems) for Public Transport during three major events: the 2010 South Africa FIFA World Cup, the 2010 India Commonwealth Games and the 2012 London Olympics.

Also, the very same ITS applications can be adopted in any other city in the daily services, providing similar positive results: better information, better public transport, attraction of more passengers, reduction of congestions, sustainability, accessibility.

The scopeThe Demonstrator is deployed and tested during the XIX Commonwealth Games and is based on the existing Public Transport infrastructures and services. For the demo purposes, a limited area is considered in Delhi, addressing some Metro and BRT lines totalling some 200 GPS equipped buses and a sample paratransit vehicles fleet (taxi and autorickshaw) of some 50 vehicles.

The control centreA control centre collects the required information, i.e. metro lines timetables; the planning and real-time GPS supervision of the BRT lines; the real-time supervision and GPS monitoring of the Paratransit vehicles. The control centre displays on electronic maps the Public Transport Lines paths and stops; the real-time vehicle GPS positions and other data; the status of vehicles (buses: off schedule; paratransit: booking status).

The user informationUsers may access information onboard (automatic next stop information and other information disseminated by the control centre), on electronic displays at stops, on mobile phones, on the web. For the demo, electronic stops are not installed.

The bus service planningThe availability of information depends essentially from the generation of the public transport service planning database, including line paths on electronic maps, timetables, vehicle duties and intersection with other services. This database is generated by an innovative software application shown at the demo. Among its benefits is the optimization of bus resources and the consequent savings in both capital cost of buses and fuel costs.

The real time monitoring and dispatchingService status is monitored in the Control Centre by a real-time GIS like application, providing the operator with all information necessary to monitor service status and to define any corrective actions aimed at managing the service, such as recovery delays, managing faults, provide information to users etc.

The demo busA bus is equipped with a state-of-the-art ITS onboard system, featuring GPS localization, GPRS real time communication with the control centre, WiFi connection to the depot infrastructures, automatic audio and visual announcements, video surveillance and recording involving 4 colour TV cameras, automatic passenger counting systems, and message exchange between driver and control centre via a touch screen driver terminal.

The Delhi demonstrator functions

Stadium in India:aims and benefitsThe demonstrator is aimed at showing the benefits of multimodal, integrated information to public transport users to plan and make their trip efficiently. The information is generated by an innovative ITS application based on timetables, real time GPS localization of buses and real time forecast of bus arrival time at stops, and on integration with paratransit service booking and use, whereby paratransit is the feeder service to reach the Public Transport infrastructures.

The demonstrator is not only targeted at the Games alone, but is also aimed at showing that long term benefits are achievable in the day to day duties of public transport in Indian cities, using the very same technologies, since good information and good public transport quality attract more passengers and contribute to sustainability and to reduction of congestions.
