LETTER FROM THE CHAIR AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTORIn 2017, HVO sent 407 volunteers to 25 countries, serving 437 assignments in 97 projects across the globe. Those are a few statistics behind our work, but the real impact is far greater as each volunteer is working closely with many local health care professionals. As the local staff receive training, whether clinical or didactic, that knowledge and skill is shared with their other colleagues and incorporated in practice, benefiting patients and the entire team of professionals providing that care. HVO’s story is one of facilitating partnerships – between institutions, local providers, volunteers and sponsor organizations - connecting people with one another and with the resources necessary to deliver education and training to health workers in resource-scarce countries. Our goal is to strengthen health care systems by developing the capacity of local health workers. It is not a goal reached quickly or easily, but it happens as a result of working side-by-side with our in-country colleagues and learning from each other. As you’ll see on page 11, HVO’s long-term commitment is making real impact; 81% of our local project coordinators reported improvement in staff skills and, most importantly, 68% noted improvement in patient outcomes in 2017! Not only are there important benefits for the patients and professionals we serve, but those volunteering with HVO also report positive impacts personally and professionally. Nearly 45% of HVO’s volunteers are repeat volunteers, who return year after year to the same site. 97% of our volunteers felt their service last year enriched their commitment to global health and service, and 86% felt it strengthened their professional networks - which is good news in this era of professional burn-out.A core value of HVO is our financial stewardship. With no debt and healthy fund balances, HVO continues to grow our program services efficiently and effectively. The trust you place in us when you support our work is one of our greatest assets. HVO is committed to accountability and fiscal integrity, which ensure that our partnerships are well-grounded. HVO would like to extend special thanks to Mr. Hansjörg Wyss for his generous multi-year gift that has allowed us to field more volunteers, improve project support, and develop in-house evaluation systems - all with an eye towards strengthening our ability to most effectively address global health systems in partnership with our project sites. The bonds and trust that develop over time are crucial to our work, as local health professionals identify challenges they encounter in diagnosing and treating patients and share them with HVO volunteers. The volunteers, in turn, share their knowledge, experience, and resource contacts from practice and previous volunteer work, to collaborate with the local staff to address the problem. HVO’s impact is magnified by the expanded partnerships we have forged with local institutions and with professional associations, all of which are backed by dedicated sponsors and donors. Each of these people is critical to the HVO mission and experience, sharing in a common commitment to improve global health care.Thank you for partnering with us on this journey to strengthen health care systems around the world!Sincerely,

William C. Horton, MDChair, HVO Board of Directors

“I had the privilege to meet and develop strong working relationships with residents and faculty at Mulago Hospital, who are similarly interested in building critical care capacity in low-income African countries. We continue to work

together and have ongoing electronic communication. Sharing ideas and educational resources, and partnering in research and quality improvement projects has made this collaboration very productive.”

“My prior experience working with people having vestibular problems in my institution helped me

understand things taught in the class with relative ease. Though I had prior experience in treating

people with vestibular disorders, this training helped me to become more systematic in my assessment, treatment planning, and

treatment delivery. The program also trained me in planning and delivering

individualized treatments for people with different kinds of

    vestibular disorders.” - Lenny Vasanthan

“My favorite experiences were in teaching the

Uganda residents. They were engaged, inquisitive, and sharply astute. During

my lecture on back pain the power went

out, shutting down my PowerPoint presentation.

The residents fetched a portable projector,

which we aimed at the wall. Immediately after

the talk several residents approached me with

patient experiences and questions. One of them

excitedly called me over to a patient bedside to show

me a gibbus deformity on a lumbar film he recognized

after we discussed it during my talk.”

INDEPENDENT AUDITOR’S REPORTTo the Boards of DirectorsHealth Volunteers Overseas, Inc. and AffiliateI have audited the accompanying combined financial statements of Health Volunteers Overseas, Inc. and Affiliate (nonprofit organizations) which comprise the combined statements of financial position as of December 31, 2017 and 2016, and the related combined statements of activities, functional expenses and cash flows for the years then ended, and the related notes to the financial statements.

Management’s Responsibility for the Financial StatementsManagement is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these financial statements in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America; this includes the design, implementation, and maintenance of internal control relevant to the preparation and fair presentation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

Auditor’s ResponsibilityMy responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on my audits. I conducted my audits in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the United States of America. Those standards require that I plan and perform the audits to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free of material misstatement.

An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity’s preparation and fair presentation of the financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity’s internal control. Accordingly, I express no such opinion. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of significant accounting estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial statements.

I believe that the audit evidence I have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for my audit opinion.

OpinionIn my opinion, the combined financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the combined financial position of Health Volunteers Overseas, Inc. and Affiliate as of December 31, 2017 and 2016, and the changes in their net assets and their cash flows for the years then ended in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America.

“Sixteen physiotherapists and physiotherapy technicians were trained in how to properly assess and fit patients for wheelchairs. By the end of the course, they could do this, as well as select the appropriate chairs, adjust them properly, and teach the patient and caregiver wheelchair mobility skills... and they understand the importance of the involvement and feedback of the wheelchair users and their families in this process. Everyone felt empowered.”
