GACIC General Assembly Kicks OffOn June 25, the German-Arab Chamber of Industry and Commerce (GACIC) hosted its annual

general assembly at the Cairo Marriott Hotel, to give its German-Egyptian business community

a comprehensive view on GACIC’s 2017 developments and elect a new board for the term

2018-2020.

Ulrich Huth, President of GACIC bid the chamber farewell in his speech as his term comes to

an end. “I would like to thank all of you very much for attending this year’s General Assembly. I

would also like to give a special welcome to Egypt and the German-Arab Chamber of Industry

and Commerce to our new CEO Mr. Jan Nöther, who started his post in Cairo on June 1st, 2018,

I wish him all the best and lots of success in Egypt. Another thank you will go to Mr. Christoph

Angerbauer who was our Interim CEO for the last 6 month. Thank you, Mr. Angerbauer for your

hard work and dedication during the last period.”

Huth also thanked the board members, the two Vice presidents, the treasurer, the committees

and their chairs, as well as, the advisory board members. “Thank you very much for the extra time

spent and all your contribution and successes,” said Huth. Huth, moreover, acknowledged the

“terrific chamber team for their contribution, dedication and hard work for the past years, it is

very much appreciated.”

Huth ended his speech by bidding all the attendees “the very best and I will make sure to visit

the Morgenrunde occasionally in order to stay in touch with the members and the team, they all

became very close to my heart.”

Nöther, presented the Activity Report 2018, and a summary of all the GACIC activities over the

last year. A reception dinner followed the successful 2018 reports and elections.

FrankfurtRheinMain Meets Cairo - Networking Reception The German-Arab Chamber of Industry and Commerce (GACIC) along with FrankfurtRheinMain

investment agency of FrankfurtRheinMain region have organized a networking reception on

the 26th of June 2018 in Cairo.

The reception was held on the occasion of the visit of the Lord Mayor of Frankfurt Peter

Feldmann to Cairo along with a delegation of German companies looking for investors in Egypt.

The event gathered high profile companies, German representative offices and businessmen

interested in investing in Germany or setting offices in Frankfurt.

3rd Jordanian-German Renewables DayThe German-Arab Chamber of Industry and Commerce (GACIC) is organizing the “3rd Jordanian-

German Renewables Day” on the topic of wind and solar energy, on the 17th of September 2018

in Amman, Jordan.

The conference will be held on occasion of a delegation of several German companies visit-

ing Amman to explore cooperation possibilities and to look for Jordanian business partners.

The initiative is coordinated within the framework of the German Energy Solutions Initiative

“energy solutions–made in Germany” and financed by the German Federal Ministry of Economic

Affairs and Energy (BMWi). GACIC is the local implementing partner.

Following the success of the past two years, it is the third edition of the conference + B2B to

be organized. This is in accordance with the recent developments of the Jordanian renewables

market which is one of the highest achievers in the Middle East with several hundreds of mega

watts already installed.

The B2B meetings will be held following the conference day on the 18th and 19th of September

2018 at the premises of the Jordanian companies.

Egypt’s FM Discusses Egypt's Latest Economic Reforms in BerlinEgypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry discussed Egypt's latest economic reforms

with the Bundestag majority leader Volker Kauder during their meeting in Berlin. According to a

statement issued by Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Ahmed Abu Zeid, Shoukry affirmed to

Kauder Egypt's keenness to maintain strong and friendly relations with Germany.

Shoukry and Kauder discussed in details most of the recently announced decisions as part of the

government's reform strategy. Shoukry called on the German companies to invest more in Egypt,

increasing the volume of trade exchange between the two countries; he explained to Kauder a

number of the recent decisions and laws which created a more suitable investment environment

in Egypt.

UK Promoting Business Trade Between Britain and Egypt

The Chief Executive of the UK’S export credit agency, UK export finance (UKEF), Louis Taylor,

visited Egypt to promote the trading business between UK and Egypt with the help of the UK’’s

government backed financing from UKEF.

During his stay in Egypt, he attended the launch of the Tahrir Petrochemicals Company, TPC,

which is a USD 10.8 billion petrochemicals complex; once the complex operates, it will help

increase Egypt’s total exports and turn the country into an industrial center.

UKEF is also working with other export agencies, such as commercial banks and Carbon Holdings,

the sponsor of the project which will make the final preparations for financing the project. Taylor

stated that UKEF will continue to support the project financially.

The launch of the Tahrir Petrochemicals Company was attended by Minister of Petroleum and

Mineral Resources Tarek el Molla and British Ambassador to Egypt John Casson.

Egypt's Economy Grew 5.4 Percent in 12 Months Egypt’s gross domestic product grew by 5.4 percent in the 2017-2018 fiscal year that ended

on June 30, new Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said, the fastest growth rate of growth

in a decade.

Madbouly, a former housing minister, was appointed prime minister last month after President

Abdel Fatah al-Sisi was elected for a second term in March.

In his speech to The parliament, Madbouly said his government was looking for growth of up to 8

percent in fiscal year 2021-22. GDP grew by 4.2 percent in the fiscal year 2016-2017.

Tourism, Suez Canal revenues and remittances from Egyptians working abroad have risen over the

past year, boosting the economy of the most populous country in the Arab world.

Remittances surged to USD 19.37 billion in the nine months until end-March, from USD 15.89

billion a year earlier, according to central bank figures released on June 28.

Madbouly said annual unemployment at the end of June stood at 10.6 percent and that his gov-

ernment was seeking to bring it down to 8 percent by fiscal year 2021-22.

The IMF Executive Board Completes Third Review of Egypt’s Economic Reform Under the EFFOn June 29, 2018, the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) completed

the third review of Egypt’s economic reform program supported by an arrangement under the

Extended Fund Facility (EFF). The completion of the review allows the authorities to draw USD

2.02 billion, bringing total purchases to USD 8.06 billion.

In completing the review, the Executive Board also approved the authorities’ requests for a waiver

of non-observance and modification of performance criteria.

Poland Discusses the Polish Industrial Zone in the Suez Canal Economic ZoneEgypt's Minister of Trade and Industry Amr Nassar and Poland's Minister of Investment and

Development Jerzy Kwieciski discussed on the first week of July the progress of the Polish

Industrial Zone in Ain Sokhna in the Suez Canal Economic Zone, according to a statement from

Egypt's ministry. The zone is set to be established in cooperation with Poland's Katowice Special

Economic Zone (KSEZ), and will contribute to an increase in Egyptian exports to other African

countries, Minister Nassar said. The new zone will also capitalize on Poland's location as a gateway

for Egyptian products into Central and Eastern European countries, the minister added.

The Egyptian Minister of Tourism Meets with the Mayor of Frankfurt The Minister of Tourism, H.E. Rania Al-Mashat met on July 26 with the Lord Mayor of Frankfurt

Peter Feldmann, along with a delegation of German companies looking for investors in Egypt.

The Minister emphasized the importance of the economic relations between Germany and Egypt

declaring that the visit of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel last year strengthened the rela-

tions further more. The meeting was attended by a representative from the German Embassy in

Cairo and a group of Egyptian tourism companies operating in the German market.

Al-Mashat pointed out that the number of tourists traveling to Egypt increased especially from

Germany. Moreover, H.E. mentioned that according to a survey conducted by Gallup International,

Egypt ranked at the top of the list of the safest countries in Africa, as well as, surpassing many

European countries.

Feldmann spoke about the cooperation he has seen develop between Egypt and Germany in the

tourism sector. Such cooperation includes, the contribution of some German companies to the

various restoration projects in Egypt, for example, and the German Company HAHN supplying two

display exhibits at the Egypt Grand Museum.

SEKEM Publishes Vision 2057 One year ago, on the 15th of June 2017, Ibrahim Abouleish, the founder of the SEKEM Initiative,

passed away at the age of 80 – in the same year SEKEM celebrated its 40th anniversary. In this

context, SEKEM community decided to further develop the founding vision and formulated an

updated vision, mission and goals for 2057.

Ibrahim Abouleish created the SEKEM vision in 1977 with a view to the challenges he saw in

Egypt during that time and in the future. With a holistic approach, he founded the SEKEM ini-

tiative, which became a successful model for sustainable development despite many obstacles.

In the Vision 2057 paper, SEKEM first takes a look to the achievements of the past 40 years:

• 2100 hectares of desert land have been reclaimed

• 600,000 trees have been planted

• 500 million tons of CO2e have been sequestered

• € 74 million net present value was generated through local food production

• 2000 direct jobs were created

• 8000 direct members were affiliated to the community

• 22,778 people in the direct surroundings of SEKEM are supplied from productivity

• € 14 million net present value was generated from savings due to the provision of local health

and education infrastructure.

ACT Executes EGP 700 Million Worth of Projects During the First Half of this YearACT, the Egyptian company specializing in information technology and value added services,

announced that it ended last year with a volume of EGP 1 billion in various sectors such as the

hotel sector, the banking sector, the petroleum sector and the governmental sector.

Mohamed Abul-Layl, ACT, General Manager said that the volume of business achieved during

the first half of this year confirms the increase in its market share. The total operations exe-

cuted by the company amounted to EGP 700 million and is expected to reach EGP1.25 billion

by the end of the year, with a 25 percent increase more than what was achieved the last year.

Abul-Layl added that the company has also launched a new academy to train new employees

for six months.

"The company has recently opened its new branch in France to serve the European continent

in hotel management and hospitality as well as its branch in Dubai. The company is currently

studying the opportunities in South East Asia to be there before end of the year. "

Elsewedy Included in Forbes Top 100 Powerful Companies in the MENAForbes Middle East Magazine has listed four Egyptian companies among its list of 100 most

powerful public companies in the Middle East and North African regions.

The companies included were: Commercial International Bank (CIB), Elsewedy Electric Co,

Orascom Construction Limited and Global Telecom. This list decided the Middle East’s most

powerful companies based off four main factors: Revenues, Net Profit, Market Value and Assets.

The CIB topped the Egyptian list, coming in the 38th strongest with a net profit of USD 421

million, sales up to USD 1.8 billion and around USD 16.4 billion in it’s total assets. It was then

followed by Elsewedy Electric which came in 69th with a USD 362 million net profit, USD 2.4

billion worth of sales and USD 2.4 billion worth of assets.

The Elsewedy family started trading in electrics in 1938 and established their first factory in

1984. The company was first named Elsewedy Cables then was changed Elsewedy Electric in

2010. The company has branches in Egypt, Syria, Saudia Arabia, Yemen, Ghana, Nigeria and

Ethiopia among others, according to the company’s official website timeline. Among the ser-

vices the company provides are: cable manufacturing, designing, engineering and construction.

BASF: With an Integrated Digital Market Approach Project Hapi Supports Tomato Smallholders in EgyptTo help tomato smallholder farmers increase yield, BASF is developing an integrated digital

market approach that includes an Early Alert Disease Warning System. Many smallholder

farmers treat their tomatoes curatively after the onset of disease which can lead to reduction

in yield. Through SMS and IVR, they will receive an early alert about the risk of infection in

their village in order to treat their crops preventatively with innovative BASF solutions. In

addition to product recommendations, farmers will also receive stewardship and safety mes-

sages. To close the loop of product availability, retailers will also receive messages from BASF

via WhatsApp.
