The Dean Talks Dear Reader,

The Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at Ghent University is internationally renowned, not only for its educational programs but also for its research activities. Indeed, we are participating in numerous international educational programs via Erasmus Student Exchange, by taking the lead in several Erasmus Mundus Programs, via international internships, via our National Secretariat of IAESTE mandate - the International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience, .... We are a key partner in numerous national and international research projects and networks as well.

Of course, internationalisation isn‘t just about professors or researchers going abroad to give lectures at foreign universities or to have research meetings with international teams. Internationalisation starts with students! Students leaving their familiar surroundings to take courses abroad, and vice versa: foreign students coming to our faculty, and hence, enriching our faculty community.

In this context, our Local BEST Group plays a crucial role. They send students to other European universities, to participate in courses and workshops. They organize complementary courses, and engineering competitions, where students can improve their skills in an interactive, I would even say: often very lively, way.

Every year, our Local BEST Group is organising EBEC Local Ghent, this competition has grown significantly during the last years, from 40 to 100 participants and the professionalism of the event grew along with it. I hope to see you on the 25th of february!

Yours sincerely,

Rik Van de Walle

Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture

ABOUT BEST

The Board of European Students of Technology is active for students in 96 universities across 33 countries. It is a non-profit and non-political organisation that has been enabling cooperation, communication and student exchanges with the most important technical universities throughout Europe since 1989.

BEST has a 18 year old history at the University of Ghent, with approximately 140 alumni. Nowadays our group consists of about 35 active members spreading the BEST spirit among the engineering students by organising all kinds of academic and non-academic activities.

Together with the international students attending courses and other events, BEST Ghent reaches a target audience of more than 2000

engineering students.

BEST strives to broaden the horizon for European technology students and to increase crossborder cooperation. In addition, through its activities, BEST manages to close the triangle ‘students-companies-universities’.

Career Support On our virtual career portal, students (more than 42.000 registered users) can find job offers, seminars, internships… The offers are provided by our international partners.

Best Engineering Competitions During the competitions the participants develop their social and cooperational skills working on a Team Design while making use of their technical knowledge.

Main Activities

Engineering Competition - EBECOne of the core activities of BEST is the organisation of the European BEST Engineering competition, or in short EBEC. Teams of four students compete against each other in solving real problems of companies (Case Study) or constructing a solution for a given task with a limited amount of materials and within a limited period of time (Team Design). The winning team will be selected based on accomplishment of the task, innovation, and presentation. Each year BEST Ghent organises a local round in which more than 100 local students participate, and in which your company can be our partner for a challenging competition.

LOCAL ROUND - EBEC GHENT

At our Local BEST Engineering Competition, teams of Ghent University students compete in Team Design or Case Study. They get judged by a jury consisting of company delegates, professors and the dean. The winner can go to EBEC Benelux. Besides this competition, we also organise one for high school students to let them discover the university, BEST and engineering competitions.

REGIONAL ROUND - EBEC BENELUX

The winners of the 8 local competitions in Belgium, Netherlands and Germany will compete in Case Study and Team Design at EBEC Benelux. The winning teams in each competition will go on to the next and final round: EBEC Final.

FINAL ROUND - EBEC FINAL

EBEC Final is the final round of this huge European collaboration. In this event, 120 contestants from all over Europe will compete. The first edition in 2009 was organised in Ghent by our very own Local BEST Group. In 2012 the team from Ghent won the Team Desing final in Zagreb.

Team Design EBEC The Team Design category consists of creative hands-on work regarding a given engineering task. TD category challenges the competitors’ practical skills to design, build and assemble a functional device as a solution to a technical problem in limited amount of time and resources. During Team Design groups of 4 engineers from all diciplines work on a problem chosen by your company. We provide them with various materials so that they can build and test there design. A demonstration of the prototype is then presented to a panel of jury consisting of the dean, a teacher, a BEST Ghent alumnus and a representative of your company.

During 4 hours 60 engineering students work on a topic chosen by your company. Besides putting all these creative minds to the test, and getting the chance to up your visibility with a company presentation and logo visible on all event materials and the event website, you also get the chance to interact with the students during the whole competition and closing reception.

Team Design Kortrijk Team Design Kortrijk works the same way as Team Design EBEC organized in Ghent, but this time the competition is exclusively for the students studying applied engineering on the campus of Kortrijk.

This part of our engineering competitions is an esclusive contest organized by BEST Ghent to bring EBEC to the students not able to reach the regular one. Thats why this competition isn’t included in the EBEC pyramide and why the winning teams don’t advance to the Benelux Round. Nevertheless Team Design has a lot of succes with the local student, usually counting over 80 participants making it one of our biggest competitions.

Case Study Case Study is the category where students can explore their analytical and economical skills in the technology sphere. Case Study category is a more abstract competition which consists of solving a theoretical, technical or managerial problem occurring in real life or industry, using the information available to evaluate creative solutions and present their outcomes to a panel of jury in front of the audience.

In practice this part of the competition consists out of 50 to 60 participants who compete against one another in groups of four. The groups have four hours to prepare a case that they will present to the jury and the other groups. The winning group is determined by the jury and continues to the national round.

Construction Contest The construction contest grew as an idea out of the succes of EBEC. We wanted to expand the com-petitons and at the same time try to target one specific field of students. The construction contest is a competition for all the students working in the contruction field, including civil engineers, architectural engineers and applied engineers in construction.

Teams of four student will compete with eachother trying to create and build a structural challenging design, putting their aquired skills and theoritical knowledge in construction to a real test.
