IntroductionPersonal profile

What is Personal Profile?

In connection with the E90 and future modelseries, the term "personal profile" refers to thesum of all vehicle functions that can bepersonalized. Personalization means that thevehicle user(s) can themselves influence theexecution or display/indication of certainvehicle functions (e.g. position of outsidemirrors) and store the settings dependent onthe type of identification transmitter used. Thesettings are stored in the control units thatcontrol or are decisive for the functions.

In previous model series, the personalizedfunctions are realized with the car and keymemory function. The scope of personalprofile functions in the E90 is based on the

scope of functions of the car and key memoryin the E60.

The general philosophy of the personal profileis to place the individual setting of the vehiclefunctions in the hand of the customer.Subsequently, the customer can quickly andflexibly change "his/her" settings andtherefore adapt the vehicle at any time to his/her personal requirements within theframework of the given options. In addition, thescope of personalized functions that can bechanged only via the BMW diagnosticssystem is drastically reduced.

The personal profile functions are realized onlyby way of the correct interaction betweenvarious control units. Personal profile istherefore an example of distributive functionswhich is set to become ever more important inthe future.

Car/key functionA general distinction is made between twotypes of personalization functions:

• Car functions

• Key functions.

Car functions

Car functions facilitate vehicle-specificpersonalization, i.e. only one setting pervehicle is possible.

The status of changed car functions is storedsuch that it is generally applicable and thefunctionalities have the same effect for each ofthe authorized car users.

After opening or accessing, the vehicle alwaysexhibits the same person-independent statusfor each user.

The car user or a user group has theopportunity of influencing selected functionsin the required manner. Cars can bedifferentiated in this way. This means from acustomer point of view individually set vehicles(choice) behave differently even when thevehicles are of the same model series andsame type.

Key functions

Key functions enable several person-specificpersonalizations, i.e. several settings(depending on the number of identificationtransmitters) are possible per vehicle. Severalcar users can individually set various functionsin the vehicle without changing the settings ofother users. When changing the vehicle user, all settings of the new vehicle user areretrieved automatically and the functionalitiesare adapted in the manner corresponding tohis/her choice. For the user it appears as if thecar "shows initiative" and "remembers" his/herpersonal settings.

In the E90 and future model series there willbe ever more key functions that can be setdirectly by the customer. Conversely, there willbe less and less car functions that can be setby the customer or dealer/workshop.

Recognition of the identification transmitter

When the vehicle is unlocked with theidentification transmitter, the number of thetransmitter is transmitted via the FBD antennato the car access system 2.

The car access system 2 assigns the numberof the identification transmitter to apersonalization number and sends thispersonalization number via the data busses toother control units.

On receiving the personalization number, theindividual control units execute the settingsdefined for the key memory.

When the identification transmitter is placed inthe slot, the car access system 2 again checksthe validity and the number of theidentification transmitter. On completion ofthe successful check, the car access system 2assigns the number of the identificationtransmitter to a personalization number andsends this personalization number via the databusses to other control units.

Recognising the identificationtransmitter in connection with thecomfort access option

On vehicles equipped with the comfort accessoption the car access system 2 also assignsthe number of the identification transmitter tothe personalization number.

The difference in this system is that thecomfort access 2 control unit requests theidentification transmitter to identify itself. Thenumber of the identification transmitter isassigned to the personalization number onlyonce and that before unlocking the doors.

Unlocking via door lock

A signal is sent from the footwell module toCAS2 when the vehicle is unlocked with themechanical key via the driver's door lock. TheCAS2 interprets the key as identificationtransmitter number 15 or it assigns theworkshop profile to it.

The workshop profile remains active also afterthe identification transmitter has been insertedin its slot.

Service personnel should always unlock thevehicles using the mechanical key via thedriver's door lock in order not to change thecustomer settings.

3 In some country-specific versions, thealarm system can be operated only with theidentification transmitter. Unlocking thesevehicles via the door lock will trigger the alarm. To cancel the alarm:Unlock vehicle with identification transmitteror insert identification transmitter in itscompartment. 1

Memory configuration in the CAS2The car access system 2 manages twodifferent numbers for each identificationtransmitter belonging to the vehicle:

• Number of the identification transmitter

• Personalization number.

The CAS2 assigns a personalization numberto the number of the identification transmitterdepending on the type of identificationtransmitter (key) and the way the vehicle wasunlocked. The memory configuration isillustrated in the following table.

Storing personal profile settingsAny changes to the personal profile settingsare immediately effective. For each personalprofile function, there is always a control unit(function master) in which the settings arestored depending on the type of identificationtransmitter used.

The bus system to which the function masteris connected determines when theimplemented changes are stored:

• The control units that are connected to theK-CAN save the settings when removingthe identification transmitter from its slot atthe latest.

• The control units connected to the MOSTsave the settings after locking the vehicleand the MOST bus assumes sleep mode.

3 The K-CAN assumes sleep mode afterthe light in the start/stop button has gone out.The MOST then also assumes sleep modeapprox. 15 seconds after. 1

3 The control units retain the saved settingseven after disconnecting the battery. 1

Decentral and central functions

The personal profile functions are subdividedinto decentral (distributed) and centralfunction. This subdivision is necessary toensure a clearly arranged overview of thepersonal profile functions. Subdivision of thedecentral (distributed) and central functions isbased only on the entry/setting location anddisplay of the personal profile functions.

Central personal profile functions are enteredcentrally (via the controller, radio buttons orsteering column stalk) and their status isdisplayed centrally (central information display, radio or instrument cluster display).

As the name suggests, decentral (distributive)functions are entered decentrally (at the IHKAcontrol panel, driver's door switch pad or seatadjustment switch) and are independent of thetype of radio/navigation system installed.

All the air conditioning functions specifiedabove are key functions. On vehicles equippedwith a navigation system, the air distributioncan be finely adjusted via the controller/centralinformation display. The IHKA is the functionmaster for all air conditioning functions.

Positions of outside mirrors

Storage of the outside mirror positions is alsoa key function. The set positions of the left/right mirrors can be personalized inconnection with the following options:

• SA 459 Seat memory

• SA 313 Outside mirror package

• SA 430 Interior and exterior mirrors withautomatic anti-dazzle function.

The footwell module FRM serves as thefunction master for setting and storing thepositions of the outside mirrors.

Driver's seat adjustments

The following settings of the driver's seat arepersonalized (key functions) on vehiclesequipped with a seat memory (SA 459):

• Forward/backward adjustment

• Height adjustment, front/rear

• Backrest tilt.

The lumbar support and backrest widthsettings are not personalized.

The driver's seat module SMFA is the functionmaster for adjusting and storing the seatpositions. The SMFA also serves as themechanical master. The mechanical master ismainly responsible for automatically triggeringthe mechanical settings on detection of theidentification transmitter.

The information necessary for establishingwhether and when the driver's seat andoutside mirror automatically assume theposition last stored by the respective user isstored in the driver's seat module SMFA.

The moment the mechanical settings areactivated can be selected under the menuitem "Door Locks/Central Locking/Last SeatPosition" in the "Vehicle Settings" menu:

• After unlocking the vehicle

• After unlocking the vehicle and opening thedriver's door

• No automatic setting of the positions(deactivation). No mechanical activities are performedeven when a valid identification transmitteris detected.

The driver himself can define the type andmoment of activation in vehicles equippedwith a navigation system (M-ASK or CCC). Onvehicles with no navigation system butequipped with the option 459 (seat memory)the corresponding selection is performed inthe workshop via CIP and the appropriatemenu item.

The mechanical settings for the driver's seatand outside mirror can be changed only whenthe user identifier (personalization number)has changed and when the automaticpositioning facility is not deactivated.

A further condition is that the engine must notbe running at the start of automaticpositioning. This requirement is for safetyreasons, e.g. to ensure the driver does notmove away from the brake pedal while driving.

When unlocking the vehicle with theidentification transmitter, the number of theidentification transmitter is sent via the FBDantenna in the rear window and diversitymodule to the CAS 2. CAS 2 assigns thenumber of the identification transmitter to apersonalization number and sends thispersonalization number via the data busses toother control units. The special status of thedriver's seat module SMFA as the mechanicalmaster now comes into play. Although theFRM has received the personalization numberfrom CAS 2 it will not position the outsidemirror for as long as it receives nocorresponding instruction from the SMFA.This means the driver's seat module SMFAsends a separate command to the FRM inorder to position the outside mirror.

Normally, the vehicle user waits while themechanically operated components reachtheir end position.

The user can cancel the movement of themechanical components through followingactions:

• By pressing the lock button on theidentification transmitter

• By closing the driver's door (by opening thedriver's door only when starting themovement)

• By pressing the seat memory buttons (nomemory is called up)

• By pressing the seat buttons (the seat is notmoved)

• By removing the identification transmitterfrom its compartment (by inserting theidentification transmitter in its compartmentonly when starting the movement)

• By starting the engine.

The automatic movement can be continuedby unlocking the vehicle again or be re-inserting the identification transmitter in itscompartment.

Service informationPersonal profile

Replacing the identification transmitterThe E90 is equipped with 2 identificationtransmitters as standard. A third identificationtransmitter can be ordered on customerrequest.

As a result, a total of 3 effective profiles areavailable to the customer and differ based onthe identification transmitter (number of theidentification transmitter and thepersonalization number).

The car access system 2 manages twodifferent numbers for each identificationtransmitter belonging to the vehicle:

• Number of the identification transmitter

• Personalization number.

Number of the identification transmitter

The number of the identification transmittercannot be changed. This number is storedonly once in the car access system 2.

If lost, an identification transmitter must bedisabled via the BMW diagnosis system(service function).

Select service functions:

• Body

– Closing and safety function

– Key/remote control

– Disable/enable.

The remaining identification transmitter(s)must be read via the BMW diagnosis systemin order to identify the lost identificationtransmitter.

Up to 10 identification transmitters can beused (loss, ...). The car access system 2 mustbe replaced if all 10 identification transmittersare invalid or lost.

Personalization number

The personalization number is necessary forcalling up the key functions.

With the aid of the BMW diagnosis system, the personalization number can be assignedto another number of the identificationtransmitter.

Select service functions:

• Body

– Closing and safety function

– Key/remote control

– PIN.

When a new identification transmitter isordered, the original personalization numbermust be read out via the BMW diagnosissystem and assigned to the new identificationtransmitter.

The following service functions are availablefor the personalization number:

• Display of personalization number

• Transfer of personalization number fromremote control to remote control

• Enter or change personalization number.

Retrofitting via CIP

Depending on the type of radio or navigationsystem, some personal profile settings areentered not under the car/key memory menu

item as before but rather via CIP and theretrofits menu item.

Saving CKM valuesThe "Save CKM values" process has beenimplemented in the CIP for the purpose ofmaking a backup of the customer settings forprogramming procedures. A distinction ismade as to whether programming isperformed with or without control unitreplacement:

• Programming without control unitreplacement

--> CKM values are saved automaticallyduring the programming procedure

• Programming with control unitreplacement

--> The "Save CKM values" function is noteffective in this case as the programmingprocedure must be interrupted and it is notpossible to ensure that the same BMWprogramming system is used.
