ECBP is the largest funded project for China in biodiversity conservation, and its management office is an affiliated organization under the Environmental Protection Ministry. During working in ECBP, Dr ZHENG Yan was in charge of institutional assessment on China’s CBD implementing system in different levels, which make her a good understanding on the existing ecological and biodiversity issues in China. Since May 2007, she joined the research team of Professor PAN Jiahua and has focused on adaptation for climate change, low carbon development, environmental economics and so on.

Denmark HENRIK EGELYNG Senior Project Researcher, Danish Institute for International Studies [email protected] Dr. Egelyng is a development Researcher and consultant working for more than 15 years in the field of institutional requirements for environmentally sustainable development. RAPHAEL BILLE Biodiversity Programme Director, IDDRI [email protected] Raphaël Billé is Programme Director in charge of biodiversity, natural resources and adaptation to climate change at the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI), a Paris-based independent think tank. Prior to joining IDDRI in 2006, Raphaël worked alternatively as a researcher, consultant and project manager for various NGOs, research institutes, bi- and multilateral development agencies. A social scientist with over ten years of experience, he specialises in biodiversity and natural resources management as well as in adaptation to climate change and evaluation of public policies. His has field experience in Europe, Asia, Africa and Central America. Raphaël holds a PhD in environmental management and two masters in regional planning and environmental economics. He has authored or edited several articles, books and reports in his areas of expertise, and he is a regular lecturer in several French universities.

Germany FRANZ W. GATZWEILER Senior Researcher, Center for Development Research (ZEF Bonn), University of Bonn [email protected] Dr. Gatzweiler is currently a senior scientist at ZEF and coordinator of the Conservation and Use of Wild Populations of Coffea Arabica in the Montane Rainforests of Ethiopia (CoCE), Center for Development Research, University of Bonn, Germany. Before ZEF Bonn, he has worked for ICRAF SEA, CIFOR, Humboldt University of Berlin, and Indiana University.

MARC GRAMBERGER Managing Director, Prospex [email protected] Dr. Marc Gramberger is managing director of Prospex, the international consultancy specialised in enabling cooperation for excellence. He is an international expert, facilitator and trainer in scenario and strategy development. He has led and facilitated a long series of international scenario projects among which scenarios on the outlook of international beverage industry, mobile commerce, energy efficiency, and on the future of land-use in Europe and the future of water and the Middle East. Marc applied foresight and strategic approaches for companies such as Toyota, MasterCard, Qatar Telecom, Lek/Sandoz, the World Business Council on Sustainable Development, and international organisations such as the World Bank, the IAEA, the IEA and many institutions of the European Union including the European Environment Agency (EEA). As former project director at the European University Institute in Florence (I), Marc has published widely on the issue of strategy and communication and is the author of the offcial OECD handbook on advanced methods to include citizens in policy making (“Citizens as Partners”).

JADE TAENZLER Journalist, Journalism Academy of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation [email protected] Jade-Yasmin Taenzler is a scholarship holder of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation Journalism Academy. She works as a freelance journalist in Berlin in addition to her studies at Humboldt-University. Ms. Taenzler graduated from the Berlin based Humboldt University with a Bachelors degree in German and English Studies in 2008. She recently studied American Politics and Journalism at American University in Washington, D.C. While in Washington, she worked for the Washington-based bureaus of Deutsche Welle TV and NBC News, The Political Unit. Ms. Taenzler has published various print and online reports for different publications, ranging from German newspapers like Berliner Zeitung, Die WELT and Thueringer Allgemeine to English publications like The Eagle and NBC’s Firstread. She also produced TV and radio reports. Ms. Taenzler currently immerses herself in her Master of German and English Studies at Humboldt University and continues her work as a freelance journalist in Berlin.

Hungary JANOS ZLINSZKY Head of Department for Strategy and Research, Office of the Ombudsman for Future Generations [email protected]; [email protected] ZLINSZKY János is Head of Department for Strategy and Research in the Office of the Parliamentary Commissioner for Future Generations. He also serves as Senior Adviser for Environmental Policy to the President of Hungary, Senior Adviser to the Executive Director of the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC), Szentendre, Hungary, and Associate Professor at the Department for Environmental Law and Competition Law, Faculty of Law, Pázmány Péter Catholic University, Budapest. Since 2004 he has been involved in the design, management and teaching responsibilities of the Course for Sustainability, a course for key government officials to help them make more sustainable policies. This course is run in a partnership, particularly with Venice International University, supported by the Italian Ministry for Environment and Territory. In 2003, he was working with the École Supérieure de Commerce et de Management (ESCEM, France) as a Visiting Professor where he designed and taught a course in Sustainable Development. His prior teaching and research includes work at Carleton University, Ottawa and a fellowship with Cambridge University, teaching courses in environmental politics in the MSc Programme, introductory courses for the MLa in environmental law. In 1996 he set up the department for environment studies at the Catholic University in Hungary. Dr Zlinszky has published extensively and presented at many conferences over the years. His qualifications include doctorates in Natural Sciences and Environmental Biology from the Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest and PhD from the University of Ulster, Coleraine, United Kingdom. Dr Zlinszky is a member of various learned societies and NGOs engaged in the work for sustainability, among them Societas Internationalis Limnologiae, and the Balaton Group. He is married with three children.

India

YOGESH GOKHALE Fellow, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) [email protected] Dr. Gokhale holds a Doctoral degree in Botany from Mumbai University. He has extensively worked on people and forest interface issues regarding conservation of biological resources. He has been working on traditional conservation practices such as sacred groves in India for past several years. He is the member of IUCN Task Force on Cultural and Spiritual values of Protected Areas. Before joining TERI he worked as a Consultant with the Secretariat of Like-Minded Megadiverse Countries hosted by the Ministry of Environment and Forests. Dr. Gokhale has extensive experience in working in Biosphere Reserves around the country. He has been associated with the evaluation of Biosphere Reserves and has visited Nilgiri, Nokrek and Simlipal BRs as a part of the Biodiversity Conservation Prioritisation Programme during 1996-98. His postdoctoral work at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore includes the development of methodologies for the preparation of the People’s Biodiversity Register. He also co-ordinated the India local level case study for the Sub-Global Assessment of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Programme. He is well versed with the issues associated with international conventions such as the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Indonesia ISMID HADAD Chair of the Governing Board, KEHATI- the Indonesian Biodiversity Foundation [email protected]; [email protected] Ismid Hadad is Chair of the Governing Board of KEHATI – the Indonesia Biodiversity Foundation, who currently serves as Chair of the Working Group on Finance in the Republic of Indonesia’s recently established “National Council for Climate Change”. He was Secretary of Indonesia’s national delegation to the 13th Conference of the Parties (COP13) and Advisor to the UNFCCC’s President for COP13’ International Convention on Climate Change hosted by Indonesia in Bali on December 2007. He has been member of the Asia-Europe ENVforum Steering Committee since 2004 and was chair of the Organizing Committee of the largest ASEM environmental conference : “1/3 of Our Planet : What can Asia and Europe do for Sustainable Development”, held in Jakarta, Indonesia, on November 2005.

HERRY PURNOMO Scientist, CIFOR [email protected] Herry Purnomo has a bachelor’s degree in agricultural meteorology from Bogor Agricultural University, master’s degree in computer science from a sandwich program between University of Indonesia and University of Maryland, USA, and doctor’s degree in forestry from Bogor Agricultural University. He is currently a scientist at Forests and Governance Programme of CIFOR. He managed the EU funded Levelling the Playing Field Project in South Sumatera site and was actively involved in Jepara site (2003-2007) and coordinated World Bank’s Sub-Project on REDD payment mechanism, distribution and institutional arrangement with ICRAF, ODI UK. Previously he had been involved in projects of forest ecosystem management, criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management, forest certification, adaptive and collaborative management of forests. Herry has published articles on forest certification, community forestry and teak furniture value chain analysis in various national and international journals and mass media. He is currently the project leader of Australian ACIAR funded project of furniture value chains.

Ireland

CATHY MAGUIRE Policy Analyst , Comhar - Sustainable Development Council [email protected] Dr Cathy Maguire is a Policy Analyst at Comhar Sustainable Development Council and a Research Fellow at Queens University Belfast. She specialises in multi-disciplinary applied research that provides an evidence base for policy and decision making. Her work has focused primarily in the following areas (1) Invasive species ecology and management; including research into invasion dynamics and ecosystem impacts, risk assessment, development of contingency and management plans and providing advice to Government; (2) Resource accounting including Material Flow Analysis, Ecological and Carbon Footprinting, Environmentally Extended Input-Output Analysis, scenario development and analysis; (3) Indicator development and assessment; (4) Awareness raising and communications including setting up and managing large stakeholder engagement programmes and communication of often complex environmental information and messages effectively to different audiences; (5) Policy development and assessment in the areas of biodiversity, invasive species, waste and resource management and sustainable development. Cathy sits on advisory boards to the Irish Government on waste prevention and biodiversity research; she is also the Chair of Friends of the Earth Ireland.

NOBUTOSHI AKAO Member, Board of Trustees, Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and Senior Advisor, Oji Paper Co., Ltd Ambassador Nobutoshi Akao is a graduate of the Kyoto University, Faculty of Law and holds M.A. from Yale Graduate School. He started his career with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan. He held key positions in the Foreign Ministry including the Ambassador for Global Environmental Affairs and concurrently Ambassador for Asia-Pacific Cooperation, Ambassador for International Economic Affairs (Chief Negotiator for Uruguay Round), Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Japan to the International Organizations in Geneva, Ambassador to the Kingdom of Thailand, and retired from the Foreign Ministry in 2002. He was the Secretary General, ASEAN-Japan Centre (ASEAN Promotion Centre on Trade, Investment and Tourism) from 2003 – 2008, and currently Member of the IGES Board of Trustees and Senior Advisor, Oji Paper Co. Ltd. He was Regional Councilor for South and East Asia, IUCN from 2000-2008, and Member, Eminent Persons Group on Subsidies, IISD (2003- 2008). He was Co-chairman, Working Group I (later II) of the UN Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for Framework Convention on Climate Change (1991-95), and Chairman, COP 8 of CITES (Kyoto, 1992). Since he was assigned as a staff writer of Kyodo News in 1983, he has covered environment and development issues from the Tsukuba Science City bureau and the science news desks in the Tokyo and Washington bureau. He has covered many international conferences on multilateral environmental agreements including UNFCCC, CITES, CBD, Montreal Protocol, Ramsar Convention, and WSSD in 2002 at Johannesburg, South Africa. He has authored or coauthored six books on global warming, fisheries resources, scientific research on ground water and natural resources management.

YASUSHI HIBI Director, Conservation International Japan [email protected] Yasushi Hibi is the Director of Conservation International (CI) – Japan. CI is an international not-for-profit organization which its mission is to conserve the Earth's living heritage – our global biodiversity – and to demonstrate that human societies are able to live harmoniously with nature. Yasushi leads CI’s efforts in Japan to generate support for global conservation through policy work, private sector engagement, and communications and outreach since 2003. Resource economist by training with Master’s degree from Duke University, Yasushi has professional experience in forest carbon projects (including AR-CDM and REDD), business and biodiversity, and mainstreaming biodiversity into international development. Yasushi has held positions in both private and public sector, namely as business management consultant a t Nomura Research Institute, Ltd. and as environment program officer at UNDP. Yasushi also serves on government committees including Ministry of the Environment’s Business biodiversity guidelines, Carbon offsets, REDD taskforce and JICA’s Environmental safeguards, and teaches part-time at Sophia University.

MASAHIRO KAWAI Dean, ADB Institute Dr. Masahiro Kawai is Professor of Economics, Institute of Social Science, University of Tokyo. He recently returned from the Ministry of Finance, Japan to the University of Tokyo. In the Ministry, Dr. Kawai served as the President of the Policy Research Institute and as the Deputy Vice Minister for International Affairs during 2001-2003. Before working for the Ministry, Professor Kawai served as the Chief Economist of the World Bank's East Asia and Pacific Region during 1998-2001. Dr. Kawai has been a faculty member at the Institute of Social Science, University of Tokyo, since 1986. Before joining the University of Tokyo, Dr. Kawai taught at the Johns Hopkins University (1978-1986, 1988) as an Assistant and Associate Professor and was a Research Fellow for the Brookings Institution (1977-1978). He also taught at the University of British Columbia (1991-92) as a Visiting Associate Professor and at New York University (1992-93) as a Research Scientist. In addition, he has served as: a Coordinator of the Japan Financial Markets Development Committee for the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (1997-98); a consultant for the International Monetary Fund (1992, 1997-98); a Special Research Advisor for the Institute of Fiscal and Monetary Policy, Ministry of Finance (1988-94, 1997-98); and a consultant for the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System (1979). The articles, essays, and reviews written by Dr. Kawai have been published extensively in professional journals and books and cover the fields of international finance, open-macroeconomics, Asian money and capital markets, contemporary Japanese economy, international development finance, economics of commodity and futures markets, and housing demand. TOSHIYA OKURO University of Tokyo [email protected] Toshiya Okuro, a landscape ecologist, has carried out researches on land degradation processes and ecological evaluations of desertification control measures in semi-arid regions, and sustainable land management for biodiversity conservation in rice-paddy dominated agro-ecosystems at National Institute for Agro-Environmental Sciences. Since 2006, he has been also involved in Sub-global Assessment (SGA) of Satoyama and Satoumi in Japan at the University of Tokyo. TAKESHI TAKAGI Chief Advisor on Sustainability Management, CSR Office, Hitachi Chemical WBCSD [email protected] Mr. Takagi joined Hitachi Chemical in 1980. He was the Managing Director of Hitachi Chemical Europe GmbH in Germany during 2000 – 2003, and the President of Hitachi Chemical America Ltd. From 2003-2007. Currently, Mr. Takagi is the Chief Advisor on Sustainability Management, CSR Office of Hitachi Chemical. Since Hitachi Chemical joined the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) – Ecosystems Focus Area Core Team (FACT) in 2007, he has been servicing as Liaison Delegate.

Malaysia ZAKRI ABDUL HAMID Director, Centre for Global Sustainability Studies, Universiti Sains Malaysia [email protected] Zakri is the Director of the Centre on Sustainability Studies at Universiti Sains Malaysia and a Senior Fellow at the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES). He was formerly the Director, Institute of Advanced Studies, United Nations University. His other appointments include as Co-Chair of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Board (2001-05); former Vice-President of the Academy of Sciences of the Developing World (TWAS); member of the Advisory Board of the Arab Fund Distinguished Scholar Program, member of the IAEA Senior Advisory Group on Technical Assistance and Cooperation and member of the ICSU Executive Board. RUDOLF DE GROOT Associate Professor on Integrated Ecosystem Assessment & Management, Environment Systems Analysis group, Wageningen University [email protected] Rudolf de Groot is Associate Professor in Integrated Ecosystem Assessment & Management with the Environmental Systems Analysis Group of Wageningen University, the Netherlands. He is a Landscape Ecologist by training and has worked for over 20 years on ecosystem functions, services and values, and on the impact of climate change on ecosystems and biodiversity. He published over 100 scientific papers, including 2 books. He was involved as Coordinating Lead author in the UN-supported Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (2001-2005) and is currently Coordinating Lead author of 2 chapters of the follow-up study “The Economics of Ecosystems & Biodiversity” (TEEB). He is a member of the Editorial Board of several Journals, including “Regional Environmental Change” and “Biodiversity Science and Management” and is Global Theme leader on Ecosystem Services of the IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management (CEM).

Pakistan

TANVEER ARIF CEO, Society for Conservation and Protection of Environment (SCOPE) [email protected] Mr. Tanveer Arif, is founding president and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Society for Conservation and Protection of Environment (SCOPE) which is an environment related NGO, functioning in Pakistan since 1988. He has a bachelor’s degree in Biology and Masters Degree in Geography from University of Karachi, Pakistan. During his 20 years working experience, biodiversity protection has been a subject of special interest for Mr. Arif. He has initiated a number of activities aiming at protection of protected areas, protected species and biodiversity in Pakistan. As an individual, he has filed a number of cases in the High court for protection of Houbara Bustard (a threatened migratory bird species), Haleji Lake, Kirthar National Park (protected areas). SCOPE is in the consultative status with UN ECOSOC and accredited with UNEP, GEF, UN CSD, UNCCD, HABITAT and many other UN and international environmental conventions, committees and bodies. It is member of International Land Coalition (ILC), Environment Liaison Centre International (ELCI), Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (E-LAW), Freshwater Action Network (FAN) and DRYNET.

ELLA ANTONIO President, Earth Council [email protected] Ella Antonio is the President of Earth Council Asia-Pacific, an international NGO that promotes sustainability mainly through effective planning and governance. She is a Trustee and Officer of two Philippine NGOs, the EARTH Institute Asia and pagbabago@pilipinas, which promote ethical and participatory governance. She is also the President of Brain Trust: Knowledge and Options for Sustainable Development, Inc., a Philippine-based think tank that conducts research studies and human resource development for government, private sector and international development institutions.

CIELITO HABITO Director, Ateneo Center for Economic Research and Development [email protected] Dr. Cielito F. Habito is a Professor of Economics at the Ateneo de Manila University, where he is the Director of the Ateneo Center for Economic Research and Development (ACERD). He also sits in the Boards of several corporations and foundations, including the Manila Water Corporation, Metrobank Card Corporation, Brain Trust, Inc., WWF-Philippines, Galing Pook Foundation, Clean Air Initiative-Asia, Maximo T. Kalaw Institute for Sustainable Development, and the Ramos Peace and Development Foundation (RPDEV). He writes the weekly column “No Free Lunch” in the Philippine Daily Inquirer. He was the youngest member of the Cabinet of Philippine President Fidel V. Ramos as Secretary of Socioeconomic Planning throughout his six-year presidency from 1992 to 1998. He chaired the Philippine Council for Sustainable Development from 1992-1998, and was elected Chair of the Sixth Session of the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development in New York in 1998. Before joining government in 1990, he was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Economics at the University of the Philippines-Los Baños (UPLB), and had also worked at Kyoto University and the World Bank. He holds a Ph.D. (1984) and M.A. (1981) in Economics from Harvard University, a Master of Economics (1978) from the University of New England (Australia), and B.S. Agricultural Economics, Summa cum Laude (1975) from UPLB.

Poland IRENEUSZ MIROWSKI Vice President, EcoFund Foundation [email protected] He graduated in Agricultural University in Warsaw, Poland. During the period of study and till 1993, he took active part in the work of non-governmental organization – The Eagles Conservation Committee. During 1986-93 he worked in the Institute for Land Reclamation and Grassland Management in Falenty near Warsaw, where he took part in the National Inventory of Wetlands and research work of Narew river. In 1993 he began the work at the EcoFund Foundation, dealing with the debt-for environment swap mechanism. During 14 years he collected experience in supporting and conducting projects, mainly connected with wetlands conservation, protection of threatened species and educational issues. Thailand QWANRUEDEE CHOTICHANATHAWEWONG Assistant President, Thailand Environment Institute (TEI) [email protected] Dr. Qwanruedee Chotichanathawewong is an Assistant President of Thailand Environment Institute (TEI). She also holds a position as an Executive Director in Thailand Business Council for Sustainable Development (TBCSD). Assuming roles of Assistant President for TEI, she is responsible for managing the organization, as well as being a project manager and supervisor for projects implemented by TEI. As an Executive Director for TBCSD, she is in charge of managing TBCSD and conducting projects and activities regarding sustainable development for TBCSD. In addition, Dr. Qwanruedee has been invited to be a special expert for the Department of Industrial Works, Ministry of Industry and to be a guest lecturer for numbers of universities in Thailand. In the past, she also used to serve the Environmental Committee of the Senate as an advisor. With more than 20 years of experiences in the field of energy and environment, Dr. Qwanruedee is an expert in various fields of environment. RUY BARRETTO Senior Counsel, Temple Chambers [email protected] Ruy Barretto S.C. was born and brought up in Hong Kong and has been active in nature conservation since a young age. For over 30 years, as member of several green groups, he has been active in habitat and species conservation, drafting of conservation policies and efforts to implement the Convention on Biological Diversity in Hong Kong. He has taken active part in legal action and submissions in government or private consultations to conserve the countryside in Hong Kong. Participated in a private zoning application to declare an area of mature lowland forest with high biodiversity as a protected area, while developing and applying the research and methodology for this and for its future management. Participated in the incorporation of Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden as a centre for nature conservation in 1995 and has been a member of the Board ever since. From his position and numerous visits, he has general knowledge of the status of conservation in South China.

MARK DUBOIS Research Fellow - Wetlands Alliance Project Leader, WorldFish Center [email protected] Thematic focus on putting poverty at the heart of wetlands planning and management. Working with communities, state and civil society in co-governance approaches which seek through adaptive co-management approaches to derive significant conservation and livelihood benefits. Communicating learning’s and developing innovations in linking theory and practice and policy makers to the poor is has been an important part of my work. My current role is to lead WorldFish engagement in the Wetlands Alliance. The Alliance is a process of regional collaboration to strengthen local-level capaci ty for sustainable, poverty focused wetlands management. Much of my work is in designing interventions which aim to support vulnerable livelihoods through livelihood strengthening, alternative livelihoods, local research and co-management, sustainable harvesting and wise use of wetlands.

All projects and work in which she was involved were of inter-sectoral and cross-cutting nature, for example State of environment reports, National environmental protection programme, environmental information and reporting system, UN Environmental Performance reviews for Slovenia, Kazakhstan and Serbia, and developing cooperation in the environmental field with other institutions as for example Statistical office, local authorities, UNEP GEO, UNEP MAP, etc. After being 6 years EEA National focal point from Slovenia, she has been detached as national expert to EEA. During that time she was dealing with EEA Cores set of indicators and environment assessments related to EU enlargement. DAVID STANNERS Head of International Cooperation [email protected] David Stanners is Head of International Cooperation at the European Environment Agency and member of the steering committee of the Asia-Europe-Environment Forum. Current responsibilities include: the development of the 4th pan-European assessment of Europe’s Environment (the 2007 Belgrade report); Volume 2 of ‘Late Lessons from Early Warnings’ on the precautionary principle; environment and health; chemical substances hazardous to the environment and sustainable production and consumption. AHMED DJOGHLAF Executive Director, Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) [email protected] An Algerian national, Dr. Djoghlaf has pursued a distinguished diplomatic career that has included postings with the government of Algeria and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). He assumed the position of Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) on January 3, 2006. He was named to his previous position as Assistant Executive Director of UNEP in June 2003, following his success as Director and Coordinator of UNEP's Division of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), where he played a key role for some seven years and successfully raised UNEP’S profile. During his tenure at the GEF, the portfolio grew from six projects worth US$ 28 million to 600 projects worth more than US $1 billion implemented in 155 countries. Throughout his impressive career, Dr. Djoghlaf has been extensively engaged in global environmental issues within the United Nations system and within the CBD process. Notably, he was the General Rapporteur of the Preparatory Committee of the UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), better known as the “Rio Summit”. He was Vice Chairman of the Eleventh Session of the Intergovernmental Committee on Science and Technology for Development and Vice President of the Negotiating Committee on the Framework Convention on Climate Change, as well as Chair of one of the two negotiating committees of the Convention to Combat Desertification.

PETER RYAN Director, International Exchange Department [email protected] Peter Ryan, a career diplomat from Ireland, joined ASEF as the Director of the Intellectual Exchange Department in September 2006. He received his undergraduate & postgraduate degrees from the National University of Ireland in Dublin and worked in Ireland and Australia in the banking sector before joining the Department of Foreign Affairs of Ireland in 1994. His strong interest in Asian-European relations stems from his appointments to the Irish Embassies in Japan, Korea & Singapore. In addition, he served as Deputy Director, Asia-Pacific in the Bilateral Economic Relations Division of the Department of Foreign Affairs. Prior to joining ASEF he was based in Singapore covering eBusiness & New Technologies in the Asia-Pacific Region for the Department of Communications, Marine & Natural Resources of Ireland. Mr. Ryan is married with two children. SUSANNE WALLENOEFFER Project Executive [email protected] Susanne Wallenoeffer, a German national, works on the Asia-Europe Environment Forum programme at ASEF, focusing on sustainable development and environment issues. She obtained a MA (awarded with merit) in European Politics, Business and Law from the University of Surrey in 2004, after successfully completing a BA in Translation and Interpretation Studies in Munich. After some experience in PR and communication, she moved to Brussels in 2006 where she worked for the development cooperation programme of the Hanns-Seidel Foundation. Susanne has extensive knowledge of EU affairs, including EU funding mechanisms and project management. Apart from working on development issues, she was involved in the founding of Indigo, a European lifestyle magazine and also contributed to Cafebabel, the first European online magazine. She joined ASEF in September 2008 as a project executive. DEWI SUYENTI TIO Project Officer [email protected] Dewi Suyenti Tio, an Indonesian national, is a Project Officer at the Asia-Europe Foundation. She is co-managing the Asia-Europe Environment Forum, and Human Rights projects in ASEF. She completed her undergraduate degree in Information Systems, and obatined a Master of Social Sciences (International Studies) from the National University of Singapore. She is passionate about development – especially education, poverty and sustainable development – and has been volunteering with International Humanity Foundation since 2008. ULRICH KLINGSHIRN Director, Hanns Seidel Foundation Jakarta [email protected] Dr. Ulrich Klingshirn is the director of Hanns Seidel Foundation Jakarta. The working activities of this political foundation affiliated to the German Conservative Party CSU are in the fields of environmental protection and environmental education, civic education and democratization as well as support for international networks between Asia and Europe engaged in these working areas. His professional carrier started in 1988 as Assistant Professor at the Department of Social and Economic Geography, University of Augsburg/ Germany. During this time he has been awarded with his doctorate carrier out in Turkey on following topic “Immigration Policy and Reintegration of Turkish Returnees from Germany” (1991). After a short assignment as Section Head for Rural and Village Development at the State Office for Rural Reorganization in the Federal State of Saxony/ Germany he moved to Indonesia, where he was working within the framework of the German Technical Cooperation for about ten years. In 1998 he has been assigned as Senior Technical Advisor for Rural Development and Good Governance in North Sumatera, from 2002 to 2005 he has been engaged as Technical Advisor and Lecturer at the Master’s Program in Urban and Regional Planning at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta/ Indonesia and from September 2005 to August 2008 he was assigned as Deputy Team Leader of a German Technical Cooperation Project (GTZ) for Sustainable Reconstruction of Tsunami devastated areas in Aceh Province. During this assignment he was in charge to assist the local governments introducing good government policies in reconstruction and environmental management. Dr. Ulrich Klingshirn is specialized in the field of administrative reform and good governance, environmental protection and integrated development as well as regional planning and rural development. YOUNG-WOO PARK Regional Director, UNEP ROAP [email protected] Dr. Young-Woo Park, a national of the Republic of Korea, joined UNEP as the Regional Director of the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific in October 2008. Dr. Park brings with him his long and vast experience working in environmental management and international cooperation both with governments and the private sector. Before joining UNEP’s Asia Pacific office, Dr. Park was the President of the Business Institute of Sustainable Development of the Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry where he actively promoted sustainable development concepts and practices to businesses in South Korea. He was Director General of International Cooperation in the Ministry of Environment of Korea. During his time there, Dr. Park played an active role in global environmental issues such as climate change and led the Korean delegation during bilateral and multilateral negotiations. Dr. Park was also a member of a number of environmental committees related to environment including the Presidential Commission on Sustainable Development, the Green Citizens Committee of Seoul City and the Nuclear Power Evaluation Committee. In addition, he headed the Department of Cleaner Production Technology Development and Dissemination at the Korean National Cleaner Production Center and the Industrial Environment Department at Hyundai Institute of Eco-Management. Dr. Park has PhD in Natural Resource and Environmental Economics from Iowa State University and a Master’s Degree in Economics from Southern Illinois University.

MAHESH PRADHAN Director a.i., UNEP RRCAP [email protected] Mr. Pradhan is the interim Director of the AIT/UNEP Regional Resource Centre for Asia and the Pacific (RRC.AP), which is located on the premises of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok. Concurrently, he serves as the Regional Environmental Affairs Officer for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, in Bangkok, Thailand. With over 16 years of experience with UNEP at the regional level, Mr. Pradhan has assisted with the development and implementation of regional and sub-regional environmental action plans and policies, and liaison with political sub-regional entities such as ASEAN, the South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP), the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and the Interstate Sustainable Development Commission for Central Asia (ISDC). Mr. Pradhan supports annual meetings of the Asia Pacific Sub-regional Environmental Policy Dialogue (SEPD), which brings together Ministerial level representatives and eminent civil society representatives from five sub-regions of the Asia-Pacific. At the Regional Resource Centre for Asia and the Pacific. He coordinates a Collaborative Action Network (CAN), and provides support to UNEP’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) and other partners in the region, such as the Swedish Environment Programme (SENSA), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), amongst others. Mr. Pradhan holds a Masters degree in the Management of Technology from the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT).
