Flood Disaster Risk Reduction and Fire in junior high school 26 Surabaya through pond Empowerment for absorption and Wetland Conservation

Summary of the activity / program

Junior High School 26 is located in west Surabaya, the area includes

residential areas and dense industrial areas. So in this region is quite high level of

environment pollution.

In addition, this region is lower than the surrounding location. So, in the

rainy season the water often stagnated at this location and it is not supported with

insufficient water drain, resulting in frequent flooding in this area includes the

location of Junior High School 26 Surabaya. In the last three years Junior High

School 26 had a huge flood which cause many detriments, including disruption of

the learning process because of water stagnated the entire classrooms, a loss of

electronic equipment and many other books that were broken because they were

soaked.

The surrounding of Junior High School 26 there are found a lot of empty

areas overgrown with weeds, during the dry season weeds are a fire sparked by

friction dry reeds in the wind. Because of its location close to schools from the

effects of smoke and ash come into Junior High School 26 that interfere learning

activities and students' health because the fumes make students difficult to breath

and make the school environment dirty because of the ash and weeds were burnt.

Based on the problem, the school has a program of activities aimed at

increasing awareness and knowledge of the importance of disaster risk reduction

education in schools in the region west of Surabaya. We prepare a fire prevention

workshops and simulations, followed by schools in the area west of Surabaya.

The implementation schedule will be implemented between September to

November 2012.

There was an employee who joined fire disaster destruction training that

was held by fire fighter department Surabaya as one of the instructors on this

program.

Background information why the school initiated this activity/progam

The Location of Junior High School 26 is located at Jl. Banjarsugihan

Street No 21 Tandes Surabaya. The total area is 12879 m2 and building area is

4511 m2. The rest of the land is for learning garden and fish ponds measuring 625

m2, located on the back of the school. The front of the school there is a field that

overgrown weeds are quite broad. On the left of the school there are also vacant

lots overgrown with weeds. On the right of the school there is a truck repair shop.

Meanwhile, behind the school there are rice fields and fishponds. In addition the

location of Junior High School 26 is lower than the south village at Banjarsugihan

street that is separated by river. so when the rainy season the water often flooded

the northern region including 26 Junior High School Surabaya.

Natural disasters that frequently occur in the Junior High School 26 is a

flood and fire weeds that exist around the school. Based on these conditions, we

consider that it is very important for the citizens of Junior High School 26 hold

activities to increase knowledge of "Education for Natural Disaster Risk

Management (Education for Disaster Risk Reduction)".

Objectives program

a. Increase knowledge and share experience in providing education for disaster

risk reduction in schools and communities of the west Surabaya, especially

Junior High School 26 Surabaya.

b. Raise awareness of the importance of disaster risk reduction education for the

citizens of the school.

c. Invites residents around the school to care for the environment and support

the school program actively.

Period of time when this program has been Implemented.

The Implementation of the workshop "Natural Disaster Risk Management

education and Simulation of Fire Fighting" will be held around September to

November 2012.
