The PDHPE curriculum is tailored to the different stages of students’ development, focusing on activities and movements within their capability, and issues that may affect them. In Preparatory to Year 2, PDHPE is based on introductory skills and movements, such as striking skills and hand-eye coordination, as well as an introduction to ball games, dance, aquatics, gymnastics and athletics. This is further developed in Years 3 and 4 with more advanced activities. In Years 5 and 6, students will use the skills learnt in earlier years in structured games including, but not limited to, soccer, touch football, netball and basketball. They will also learn life saving skills in aquatics. “Primary and Secondary PDHPE is all practical and assessments are practically based,” Head of PDHPE, Mrs Christine Simms said. “Assessments are conducted during a game situation or while students are undergoing skills-based activities. Teachers look out for students’ grasp on specific skills required to be able to participate in the activity or game and also their understanding of the rules and game play.” In Secondary, students learn about issues such as healthy eating, the importance of physical activity, safety, relationships, body systems, and health issues in sport and drug use. Assessments in these involve both written and practical components, including students making brochures, pamphlets, videos, PowerPoint presentations, oral presentations and written tests. The practical component includes units in: Athletics, cross country and fitness; Hockey; Gymnastics, trampolining, dance (movement); Aquatics, life saving; Netball; Soccer; Cricket; Volleyball; Touch; Badminton; Basketball; Lacrosse; European Handball; and Recreational Sports. Read more about how the study of PDHPE can impact on students’ future health, employment and lifestyle in part 3 of the PDHPE feature in Dhanara in Week 7. Mr Ian Nelson believes exercise plays a vital role in our lives and that the PDHPE department serves a very important role in the school community, providing opportunity for students at AISHK to try many different activities. Further complementing PDHPE is the ECA program, which provides opportunities for students to develop their interests further. Ian is a passionate footballer, who has played in the YauYee League in Hong Kong and was selected in the HKFC International Soccer Sevens tournament, where he played against some former professional English and Australian players. When Mr Nelson was younger he also played some cricket and had a keen interest in cross country running. He is currently training to run the HK Marathon. Mr Peng Kin Wong has been teaching PDHPE for 25 years and has worked in public, private, single-sex and co-educational schools in NSW before working at AISHK. “Through PDHPE, students develop knowledge, understanding, skills, values and attitudes that enable them to advocate lifelong health and physical activity,” he said. “The most exciting part about working in PDHPE is knowing I played a small part in nurturing the growth and development of our students”, he added. Mr Wong is interested in most sports, but in particular WuShu and Wing Chun martial arts, tennis, swimming and gymnastics. News from the Primary Division

Leonie Drew Principal Primary, Co-Head of School [email protected]

Last week was a wonderful celebration of our Chinese program and of China Studies in our school. The special Early Childhood Chinese assembly was filled with colour, enthusiasm, developing language skills and was the culmination of an action packed week that was full of fun and excitement. We are indeed very fortunate to have such fine and dedicated Chinese teachers here to educate and guide the children. This year many of the Chinese parents volunteered their language skills and time to provide shopping and Chinese games in Putonghua for the children to enjoy. These activities also provided much needed opportunities for students to practise their Mandarin speaking. A big thank you to the mothers who organised and ran these activities, we hope you will do this again next year! There are many fabulous photos of the Chinese celebration throughout the week both in this newsletter and in year level OLP (On Line Learning Platform) sections. Please make sure you have a look.

In keeping with our theme on the PE programs at the school I provide an overview for primary. At AISHK we follow the Australian curriculum guidelines which place emphasis on the importance of health and physical education. Research has shown us there is an important link between physical activity, physical education and academic achievement and the significant role that physical education and sport can play in achieving positive preventative health outcomes and enhancing the quality of life.

We are committed to the pursuit of active and healthy lives for all and through physical education we aim to develop the skills and knowledge for successful lifelong participation in sport.

Each child in the Primary years has a PE lesson each week which is taken by a Physical Education teacher. These lessons follow a planned program of sequential skill development. In addition children in the Early Childhood years (P-2) have a Perceptual Motor Program lesson each cycle. The PMP is designed around Gross Motor skill development. This is important for children of this age, particularly in Hong Kong where families do not usually have a backyard for children to run around, build cubbies and climb trees.

Students in Year 3 to 6 have a Sport Activity afternoon each week as a year group. This is usually run as house activities or as rotations and enables students, of this age, to use the skills they have been learning and developing in PE lessons to actually play team sports. Our sport activities concentrate on the schools core ACAMIS sports which are soccer, rugby, volleyball and basketball, as well as an experience of other sports including swimming. These activities are currently under review and we hope to add more to the range.

Library NewsWhat a jam packed term this is. Last Friday, we enjoyed a week’s worth of fun activities to celebrate Chinese Week and next Friday 7 September, we will see our favourite characters come alive for the annual Stage One Book Week Parade. Please note the earlier than normal starting time of 10:30 am. There will also be year level displays to recognise award winning picture books for the coveted Children’s Book Council of Australia’s “Early Childhood Book of the Year” and also the “Picture Book of the Year”. For those parents who like to keep up with the award winners, please go to the Children’s Book Council of Australia website www.cbca.org.au to see the titles for not only this year but past years as well.

For those who are staying in Hong Kong over the autumn, please note that there will be another dramatisation of one of Julia Donaldson’s books, the “Stick Man” from 6-10 October 2010.

Thank you to all those parents who have given our school such positive feedback after we announced the launch of our Secondary Laptop Program for 2011. As I indicated in last week’s newsletter, to introduce laptops is a significant step forward in providing a quality learning environment at AISHK and I look forward to next year with great anticipation to observe their implementation. Hewlett Packard have indicated to us at this time they expect the first batch of machines to be ready for delivery in late Term 4. It takes time to complete assembly and image every computer with the extensive range of software we have been able to acquire for each machine. We will advise parents of students, who will be in Years 6, 7 and 9 in 2011, of delivery details once they are confirmed.

From Monday 13 September, Year 11 students will undertake their Preliminary Higher School Certificate and IB Examinations. I look forward to students celebrating further success in their studies as they reach yet another milestone in their senior academic program.

Parents please note Year 11 students are only required to attend school when they have an examination session. Students please note the starting time for each examination session. A summary of the examination timetable is provided below for your reference.

Hot Lunches for Young Students at the CafeteriaYoung students who have pre-ordered hot meals from the School Cafeteria are not allowed to make changes to their selection. The pre-order system is put in place for these students for a number of reasons:

Firstly, as these students are very young, as parents you need to make the •right food choices for their children, taking into consideration any allergies, likes and dislikes. It is suggested that parents involve children in the selection process. When the Early Childhood students come down to the cafeteria to have their •lunch their places are set with their choice already laid out for them. If they then go and change their minds, this gives them less time to eat and is also disruptive to the other students and staff who supervise their lunch.Chartwells need to plan as much as possible the meals at AISHK to ensure •we not only have great choices for all staff and students but also minimise the amount of wastage at the end of the day. We try where we can at AISHK to be environmentally friendly and minimise food wastage.
