The aims of the course are:

The overarching aim of the course is to provide a course of continuing professional development at Level 7, in a supportive learning environment, within a flexible and modular structure, in order to support leadership in the profession and the enhancement of outcomes for people who use services, families, carers and communities

MSc Advanced Social Work/ Advanced Social Work and Management, has been developed in accordance with the QAA Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (QAA 2008), descriptor for a higher education qualification at Level 7: Master’s degrees. By the end of the course, students will be required to demonstrate the achievement of the Course Learning Outcomes (detailed above) which have been informed directly by, and developed in accordance with, the FHEQ descriptor for Level 7. The summation of students’ demonstration of Level 7 abilities is in the dissertation (SS730 Research in Advanced Social Work Practice: the Dissertation), where students are required, on a self-directed basis, to demonstrate up to date, comprehensive and systemic knowledge of advanced social work, originally applied to their area of complex practice, with critical evaluation of existing, complex research alongside detailed knowledge of research methodologies, approaches and methods.

LEARNING AND TEACHING

Learning and teaching methods

As an advanced course of continuing social work professional education development at Level 7, learning and teaching on MSc Advanced Social Work/ and Management is concerned with the development, consolidation and demonstration of:

Comprehensive and contemporary knowledge (as set out in the Course Learning Outcomes) in relation to the practice of advanced social work practitioner; social work manager; professional social work educator

The academic and conceptual skills associated with advanced, independent scholarship Research knowledge and skills Critical analytic and reflective skills in relation to, and to support advanced practice as either an

advanced social work practitioner; social work manager; professional social work educator To support these ends, and in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, the learning and teaching methods on the course aim to offer students a research led, reflective, active and transformational learning experience which will support and promote their own personal and professional development, promoting their practice at a senior level. A range of learning and teaching methods are used which may be summarised as follows: Formal lectures, presentations and workshops

Formal lectures, presentations and workshops, with associated seminar and small group work are used in module learning and teaching as a methods of introducing (and at times updating and reviewing), knowledge. These formal presentations of knowledge are given by University lecturers, but given the specialist nature of much knowledge (e.g. SS7132 Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Skills and Assessment; SS700 Managing the Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults;), specialist lecturers (e.g. lawyers; police; social work, health and medical practitioners) and service users and carers are also involved extensively. University based staff are research and scholarship active and their research expertise and knowledge ensures that learning and teaching is research led, to support the development of evidence based decision making in practice. This approach, involving a range of presenters with different expertise ensures that knowledge is up to date and relevant to students’ advanced practice. Use of case material: Central to learning in these formal methods is the integration of new/updated learning with practice. This is achieved via the extensive use of simulated and actual (anonymised) case material with presentation of new material. Thus, new learning is illustrated and explained by applying it critically to situations which present in practice (e.g. in relation to issues of capacity; the complexities in relation to needs for protection). Most module learning and teaching occurs intensively; i.e. in ‘blocks’ of approximately 1 weeks teaching, in order to fit with the demands for practice. Blended Learning Blended Learning has been defined as a method which combines directly taught sessions with online learning materials (Sharpe, et al, 2006). Sharma and Barrett (2007) state it ‘combines a face-to-face (F2F) classroom component with an appropriate use of technology’. Gibbs 2002; Nicholls and Garner 2002 refer to it as a ‘flexible form of course delivery’. This approach, in placing emphasis on the creative use of technology is in line, again, with the University’s Strategic Plan. Mixing methods of learning, including use of e-learning, addresses:

- The integration of academic learning complex practice and with the students’ developing advanced skills and knowledge, and

- The fact that learning takes place in the University and when students are away from campus and in practice

Thus, while formal presentations introduces/ revisits/ update/ students learning on specialised areas of practice (examples as above, but also, e.g. SS731 Social Work Practice Education, Assessment and Supervision; SS7222 Managing in the Public and Voluntary Sectors; SS7221 Strategy and Planning in the Public and Voluntary Sectors), the initial introduction of material is supported further by a blended learning approach, involving directed learning, using refereed journal articles; key texts; key legislation/ regulations/ policy documents. Key in this blended approach to learning, is the use of e-learning, using studentcentral (the University’s student intranet), which offers opportunities for posting relevant module learning materials and information; for posting exercises for students to check and rehearse knowledge (in timed sequences if appropriate) and for facilitating discussion groups. Use of studentcentral, and reference to the extensive number of electronic journals held by the Library, allow materials to be continuously and easily available, whether the student is in the University or in practice. It is important to be mindful that students learn in a variety of ways and that key to developing knowledge base and cognitive and conceptual skills also is self directed, or private study. Small group and individual work Key to the development of advanced skills in practice is the ability to critically analyse and reflect on own and others’ practice, especially in the arena of complex and demanding practice. To this end, all modules involve a degree of small group work. However on some modules, this is the primary learning and teaching mode (e.g. SS7125/SS7129 Independent Learning for Advanced Practice in Mental Health or Social Care; SS732 Critical Reflection on Practice) specifically in order to help students develop their skills in relation to reflection on practice, knowledge base, professionalism and leadership . All students have also the support of a Tutor (who is usually the Course leader) to support individual personal and professional development. Inter professional learning with students from other professions

While the learning and teaching on the course has a clear focus on the development of knowledge and skills for advanced social work practice, reflecting the integration of social work and social care with both health and education services, opportunities for learning and teaching with students from other professions exist on a number of modules (e.g. SS7132 Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards: Skills and Assessment; SS733 Decision Making in Specialist Services in Health, Social Work and Social Care; SS7222 Managing in the Public and Voluntary Sectors; SS7221 Strategy and Planning in the Public and Voluntary Sectors; SS700 Managing the Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults) Dissertation supervision On SS730 Research in Advanced Social Work Practice: the Dissertation, learning on research methodology and methods is taught intensively via lectures and other forms of formal presentations, with opportunities for small group work to begin the process of application of learning to the student’s own original research plans or proposal. Thereafter, in keeping with the academic skills expected at Level 7, students work on a largely self-directed basis, with the support and guidance of a dissertation supervisor. The significant proportion of self managed learning at this stage develops further students’ capacities for independent learning and decision making in relation to complex material. Dissertation supervisors are social workers and this ensures understanding of the complexities of practice and their integration with academic learning. The dissertation must be on a topic related to advanced social work practice and, for the award ‘and management’ must relate to management issues. MSc Advanced Social Work/ and Management and issues of sustainability Sustainability is a core value of the University and is critical to all its ways of working, including learning and teaching (University Strategic Plan 2012-2015). Sustainability is considered in a number of fora in the School of Applied Social Science and it is suggested that learning and teaching on this course contributes in promoting, in the area of social work, ‘social progress which recognises the needs of everyone’. (Higher Education Partnership for Sustainability 2004. Learning and Skills for Sustainable Development: Developing a Sustainable Literate Society). MSc Advanced Social Work/ and Management engages with local communities and organisations through developing and delivering the course in partnership with Local Authorities and Service Users and Carers and through the involvement of the students who are advanced social work practitioners. In terms of education for sustainable development, the course promotes students’ critical thinking and problem solving abilities and, as advanced practitioners, students are able to work with service users, carers, groups and communities to develop their own problem solving skills. As stated, the course is participatory in its ethos with partnership working with local organisations and between students. It is a course which is driven by core social work values relating to ethical decision making, respecting different values, knowledge and opinions. Further, the course has an inter disciplinary and inter professional ethos, supporting students’ ability to consider the complexities of social work practice from a range of different perspectives, taking individuals’ personal, social, economic and environmental contexts into account. ASSESSMENT

Assessment methods

MSc Advanced Social Work uses a range of different summative assessment methods to assess - Students’ understanding of the comprehensive, complex underpinning knowledge base Academic skills - i.e. conceptual, analytic and reflective skills Ability to apply detailed knowledge and academic skills to complex, demanding, advanced practice Knowledge of, and skills in relation to use and application of research methodology and method

In terms of ability to assess the application of comprehensive knowledge to practice and associated advanced academic skills, the course uses essays and reflective and critical case analyses where new knowledge is applied to practice (e.g. SS735 Social Work with Adults; SS7222 Managing in the Public and Voluntary Sectors; SS7221 Strategy and Planning in the Public and Voluntary Sectors). However, to ensure variety in assessment methods and to assess skills in presenting complex material in relation to practice, presentations are also used (e.g. SS700 Managing the Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults; SS733 Decision Making in Specialist Services in Health, Social Work and Social Care). Reflecting the statutory demands in relation to using the Mental Capacity Act 2005 in practice as a Best Interest Assessor, an examination is used for SS7132 Deprivation Liberty Safeguards: Skills and Assessment, in order to ensure rigorous assessment of students’ individual ability to use and apply relevant law. Reflecting the requirements of the College of Social Work’s Professional Capabilities Framework, critical reflection on practice is assessed on most modules but is a specific focus in the modules SS732 Critical Reflection on Practice; SS731 Social Work Practice Education, Assessment and Supervision; SS7108 Enabling Learning and Assessment of Practice in Social Work. In the two practice education modules (SS7108 and SS731), students also produce portfolios of evidence of their practice as educators upon which they write their reflections; this evidence is graded pass/ fail. All modules have assessment workshops in order to support students in preparing for, and developing their assessments and are supported in a range of different forms of formative assessment (e.g. development and discussion of essay plans with module co ordinators; group work to prepare for assessment). The 15,000 word dissertation (SS730 Research in Advanced Social Work Practice: The Dissertation), is the summation of the assessment strategy, assessing students’ comprehensive knowledge base, the application of this knowledge to an issue in advanced social work practice/ management; knowledge of, and skills in relation to research methodology and methods and conceptual and analytic skills. Assessment criteria and generic grading descriptors Each module assessment is given a percentage mark and is assessed against a module assessment criteria derived from the module learning outcomes, which are made available to students in the module handbook at the start of each module. At PG Cert level learning is concerned with the consolidation and further development of knowledge and skills, in line with the College of Social Work’s (TCSW’s) Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF) guidance for ‘Social Work Level’. Although initial learning is designed for newly qualified social workers, to support their development in their Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE), together with the 40 c module SS729 Needs Protection and Assessment in Adult Services, the course also provides opportunities for review, development and reflection for more experienced workers. At this level, studies are particularly concerned with knowledge and skills to support and develop assessment, intervention and practice in increasing complex work in the full range of Adult Services. At PG Diploma level, studies support learning in relation to practice commensurate with TCSW’s ‘Experienced Social Worker’ guidance in the PCF and supports knowledge and skill development in relation to the pathways of TCSW’s PCF guidance for ‘Advanced’ level – i.e. as Advanced Social Work Practitioner; Professional Social Work Educator; Social Work Manager. At PGDip Level, students are encouraged to plan to study modules, in conjunction with Course Leader advice, which will support their own particular professional development and leadership needs in relation to challenging and demanding practice. For the Master’s degree, studies are concerned with development of research knowledge and skills and the application of this learning in the dissertation to the student’s own area of practice, presenting detailed and reflective knowledge on this. As stated above, to be considered for the award of MSc Advanced Social Work and Management, students must have achieved successfully 60 taught management module credits and present a dissertation relating to management. Students who achieved PGDip Approved Mental Health Practice, may transfer their credits in to MSc Advanced Social Work/ and Management (see Course Regulations)

EXAMINATION AND ASSESSMENT REGULATIONS

Specific regulations which materially affect assessment, progression and award on the course e.g. Where referrals or repeat of modules are not permitted in line with the University’s General Examination and Assessment Regulations for Taught Courses.

The examination and assessment regulations for the course are in accordance with the University’s General Examination and Assessment Regulations for Taught Courses (available from studentcentral). COURSE EXAMINATION AND ASSESSMENT REGULATIONS 1. Failure to meet module assessment requirements 1.1 Referral and progression. A student may be referred if the Examination Board considers the student can demonstrate the achievement of the module learning outcomes without having to repeat the module. Such referral is at the discretion of the Examination Board. 1.2 Number of credits in which students may be referred A student on MSc Advanced Social Work/ and Management may be referred normally in a maximum of 60 taught credits. A student who is referred in more than 60 taught credits will not be eligible normally to progress to the award of MSc Advanced Social Work/ and Management, In calculating the total number of credits a student has been referred in, account will be taken of referrals made in respect of modules taken on PGCert Professional Social Work Practice and PGDip Professional Social Work Practice. 2. Award of MSc Advanced Social Work and Management In order to eligible for the award ‘and Management’, students must have undertaken successfully 60 credits from taught management modules, as per Course Structures diagram set out above. 3. Attendance In line with the professional nature of the course and to ensure appropriate learning, students must attend normally 80% of all scheduled teaching, learning and tutorial sessions in the University. Failure to maintain this requirement will be relevant in considering student referral and progression at the AMHP and Social Work CPD Examination Board 4. Awards A student may receive the award of MSc, notwithstanding the fact that they may have received earlier the award of PGDip Approved Mental Health Practice/ PGDip Professional Social Work Practice/ PGCert Professional Social Work Practice, since these awards will have been made as they are commensurate with particular levels of professional social work capability. 5. Fitness to Practice and Matters affecting Registration as a Social Worker 5.1 Fitness to Practice Students registered on the course are registered social workers and are expected to conduct themselves t all times in accordance with Health and Care Professions Council requirements, Any issue of fitness to practice arising on the course would will be considered under the University’s Fitness/ suitability to Practice Procedure and/ or referred to the student’s employing authority 5.2 Matters affecting Registration as a Social Worker Given the protection of title and the title and nature of this award, students are required to advise the University, as well as HCPC and their employer, of
