Over 500 primary school students in theGreat Southern are about to get theopportunity to participate in ‘Pop-upParliaments’.
The Parliamentary Education Office (PEO)will be spending week four of this term in the region providing immersivelearning opportunities.
A Professional Learning session will alsobe held for primary, secondary and VETeducators at Spencer Park Primary Schoolon Thursday the 9th of August from4 to 5:30pm, providing teachers with the opportunity to explore a variety ofresources and methods to engagewith their students.

Secondary schools from across the state have submitted poems to the inaugural Parliamentary Poetry Competition, including metropolitan and regional areas such as Jurien Bay, Margaret River and Cape Naturaliste. Schools had the opportunityto nominate their best poem from an individualstudent, focusing upon the theme: ‘Democracyin WA’. The authors of the three best poems,

TeaCHERS IN THE HOUSEApplications are now open for the Parliamentary ProfessionalLearning Sessions. Held in the Legislative Assembly, these sessions will give participants the opportunity to familiarise themselves with all of our latest Civics and Citizenship resourcesand share strategies on how to effectively engage students.
Feedback from these sessions is always very positive and they provide a dynamic forum for educators to exchange ideas.

as judged by Dr Harry Phillips, will be invited alongwith five guests to a reception at ParliamentHouse and have their poems published on the official Parliament of Western Australiawebsite. The three finalists will be announced in next term’s edition of POWA House.All school winners will receive a Parliamentarycommendation certificate.

Star Class award
Community Education Workshop
The number of school groups participating in the freeguided tours of Parliament House continues to grow.
On sitting days, students have the opportunity to watchMembers of Parliament in action and on non-sittingdays, classes can enter the Legislative Assembly chamber and participate in a role-play or division exercise. Over the past term, we have had thousands of students attend from schools across the state.
CLASS
Last term, the school class that demonstrated the best preparation prior to their tour was from Ballajura Primary School. As instructed in the visitor guidelines they did not bring bags
to Parliament and demonstrated exemplary courtesy throughout their visit. Congratulations on receiving the Term 2 Star Class Award!

Getting your voice heard in Parliament and community advocacy
The Parliament of Western Australia’s Education Office is aboutto conduct a Demystifying Democracy workshop at theCity of Albany for community members.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn about lodgingpetitions, contacting Members of Parliament and how to makea submission to a Parliamentary Committee. They will alsohave the opportunity to meet their local member and Speakerof the Legislative Assembly, Hon. Peter Watson.
A number of Members of the Legislative Council have alsogenerously made themselves available for this engaging event.To attend the forthcoming Demystifying Democracy workshopto be held at the City of Albany’s Civic Room from 4.00pm to 5.30 pm on Tuesday the 7th of August, you can reserve your place HERE

Term two has seen schools in country areas continue to take advantage
of the Parliament of Western Australia’s Country School Travel
Rebate. This initiative provides access to support funding for
schools within the Travel Zone.
