Trustee Update

Hello Parkminster family,

The Trustees have been working hard to care for

our building and property during this challenging

time. I want to give you an update on several big

projects:

Security camera system: this has

been discussed over the last few

years and more than a few of you

have told us this would be

desirable. We have completed the

installation of 6 cameras at most

entrances and will install 2 more to

cover remaining areas. They are

motion activated and once triggered it is record-

ed. We review all video and will contact people

who don’t smile on their way into the building……

just kidding!

Siding and window replacement: the old clap-

board siding facing Chili Ave (the “bowl”) has

been in very bad shape for some time, in fact

things are so bad now water is getting into the

building. Also, the windows are original to the

building and need replacing. We have selected a

very good contractor, look for work to begin soon.

Vinyl siding, new windows, and aluminum trim

equals maintenance free!

Entrance doors re-keying and repair: we have not

changed the entrance locks in decades and there

is a huge number of keys to the building out there

with people who have left the church and also

lost keys, making the building less than secure.

In addition, many of the locks and related hard-

ware are old and in need of repair, cleaning, lu-

brication, and adjustment. Just last week an exit

door in the sanctuary was found to be inoperable.

We have a locksmith we have worked with be-

fore, Glenn Miller, who is great to work with and I

highly recommend. New keys will be distributed

to those who need them.

Manse: we have lost all our previous renters and

have been cleaning and making repairs, looking

to rent it soon. If you know of anyone looking to

rent a house w/ three bedrooms please contact

us.

Blessings to all, Scott McClurg

Ways to “church” during the rest of the week

I have come to truly settle in and, yes LOVE, the way we are doing church on Sundays during covid. I have looked around and asked around to learn what other churches are doing. Some have not had services at all. Some have just started in-church services. Some are continuing online ser-vices. One church - Union Presbyterian in Scottsville - has combined efforts with the Methodist church next door and has been doing live services from the back of a pickup truck in the church parking lot and people can tune in on their car radios. Kind of like going to a drive-in movie. The parking lot has been full!

What spirit and creativity we have in finding ways to praise God! I believe everyone who has preached and led worship at Parkminster through the pandemic has been superb! And I have wit-nessed profound growth in those who have relentlessly gotten up in front of us to bring us messages of hope, resilience, and wonder in how great God is. Thank you. You are the breath of life we need.

The addition of the Davies to the Worship Team has also been an infusion of joy and enthusiasm. I personally feel the presence of the Holy Spirit when we are all together on Sunday mornings.

I want to reintroduce the power of praising God all week by continuing to show our Christian love to our community, both within our church, our neighborhoods, and the larger community of Rochester. I know many of you continuously care for each other and your neighbors. This is exactly what I love about you all.

I have been masking and distancing and staying away from people for the past 6 months. But I am aware that the parts of the community we were serving before COVID are still in need of help.

St. Joseph’s House of Hospitality has remained open for needed services during the week, and on Sunday afternoons they are still open for dinner and hospitality (many of the people who come on Sundays live alone and have no contact with people during the week, so the hospitality is as im-portant as the meal). I am going to start helping with this one Sunday a week. I won’t ask people to jeopardize their health by coming out in person but I have a list of things that are needed if you would like to contribute in that way. I was so overwhelmed last winter by the selfless kindness so many of you showed to the St. Joe’s community.

St. Joseph’s - Items needed:

• bag lunch supplies - lunch meat, cheese, individual packs of chips, crackers, cookies, fruit, gran-ola bars, water, paper lunch bag, ziploc bags

• hand soap, dish soap, paper supplies, coffee, hygiene supplies for men and women (travel sizes are good).

Open Door Mission’s Coldwater House for homeless women and their children is still open, alt-hough volunteers have not been utilized since March. If you would like to support Coldwater House during these times, they are requesting donations of certain items:

Coldwater House - items needed:

• paper products (paper towels, tissues, toilet paper)

• fall and winter clothing for women and children in all sizes.

Finally, Aurora House in Spencerport is looking for volunteers. They are a comfort care/hospice home providing care for 2 residents at a time. They will be reopening soon and need volunteers for caregiving, cleaning, yard maintenance, assisting with fund raising projects, etc. No training is need-ed to apply - training provided. To learn more, if you are interested, contact Aurora House at: aurorahousewmc.com or call 584-617-4863.

If you have questions about any of these community needs, feel free to contact me as well. [email protected] or 585-797-5951.

Our October "Worship Song of the Month" is All I Have Is Christ. We'll hear or sing the song sev-eral times in worship throughout this coming month.
