Historical NoteMalmesbury was a fortified town before the Norman

Conquest and was designated as the first royal borough in

1086. It is dominated by the Abbey which was founded in

the 7th Century and most of the land in the area was in the

Abbey’s possession.

DescriptionBurton Hill House was originally a substantial stone manor

house built in the late 17th Century. In 1842 Mr John

Cockerell was the owner of the property and employed his

brother, the renowned architect Charles Robert Cockerell

to design a new house. Following a fire it was rebuilt and

subsequently it was purchased by Colonel C W Miles in

1849.

It is an impressive Victorian house. It is mentioned in

the Wiltshire edition of Pevsner and is a Grade II Listed

property.

The principle elevation has deep gables with battlemented

parapets over and attractive deep bays. The garden room

(Garden House) has stone mullioned windows with a

fretted parapet over. The family room (former ballroom)

extension (Park House) was built to a complementary

design and the west elevation has a tall projecting twelve

light window enjoying the views.

The interior was built to a high specification. The double

height octagon entrance hall (Burton Hill House) has a

Gothic fireplace, fine compartmented ceiling and arched

openings. To the southeast is a reception room with a Louis

XV style marble chimney piece and the west reception

room has a classical chimney piece with carved oak leaves.

The family room (Garden House) is Jacobean in style

with an elaborate chimney piece and arcaded panelling

and matching plaster work ceiling. The family room (Park House) is in similar Jacobean style with a compartmented

plaster work ceiling bearing the Miles coat of arms in the

centre. The open staircase hall (Burton Hill House) has a

fine substantial oak staircase, Jacobean in style with heavy

new posts and heavy handle rails. The upper rooms retain

some fireplaces, joinery and plasterwork.

The grounds are well landscaped and provide a mature

setting for each of the houses.

Until 2008 Burton Hill House was run as a charity home.

The present owners have undertaken a substantial and

painstaking planning process now undertaken by Russell

Taylor Architects of London, to convert this fine building

into a number of residential units to take full advantage

of the building’s many fine features and the delightful

landscaped gardens.

SpecificationThe current owners have divided the three houses and laid

on the services (main gas, electricity and water) so that each

house can be developed without the necessity of agreeing

works with the neighbouring properties. The existing

drainage arrangements will remain, with a shared septic tank.

Substantial works have been carried out including replacing

all the lead on the roofs.

Future plansThe owners are in the process of converting the north wing

to form units 4 and 5 which will have some well planned

accommodation. The chapel and adjoining garage block

also has consent for development into three separate units.
