Exhibition now open!

Seven Weeks for Water 2016 (Sent to us by Val Edwards)

According to the Christian tradition, Lent is a time to prepare for the celebration of the death and resurrection of Christ. During this period many people engage in fasting and practise moderation or self-denial in order to focus on repentance and consecrating oneself to God. While water has a strong spiritual significance in the Christian

tradition as a gift of God, this scarce resource is threatened and denied to millions around the world. The EWN invites you to use this season of Lent to reflect on water. Since 2008, the EWN has been providing weekly theological reflections and other resources on water for the seven weeks of Lent and for World Water Day on 22 March.

Thirst for Justice "Jerusalem is a most significant destination for the pilgrimages by people of all three faiths of the book, and a place where they live side by side. And yet, in this holy place, we have confronted a most unholy reality: the terrible suffering of the Palestinian people from lack of clean water and adequate sanitation. And what is lacking in Palestine is not water; what is lacking is justice. The Palestinian people thirst for water justice." (EWN Jerusalem statement, June 2014) The WCC’s Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace will have a regional focus on the Middle East in 2016. Accordingly, the Seven Weeks for Water in 2016 will take us on a pilgrimage of water justice in the Middle East, with specific reference to Palestine. The Biblico-theological reflections and resources for the seven weeks will be based on the water crisis in Middle East region and take into consideration issues of justice and peace. During Lent 2016, various activities around the Seven Weeks for Water will take place in the Middle East, particularly in Palestine, starting with a launch in Jerusalem on 10 February (Ash Wednesday according to the Western traditions of Christianity) The biblical reflection for the second of the Seven Weeks for Water 2016 is by Hind Khoury, a Palestinian economist who served as minister of Jerusalem Affairs with the Palestinian Authority and then as Ambassador to France from year 2006-2010. Currently she is the secretary general of Kairos Palestine, a Christian Palestinian movement which advocates for ending the Israeli occupation and achieving a just

solution to the conflict. In this reflection Khoury describes water as a source of life and a gift of God to all. Using the Palestinian thirst for justice as her starting point, Khoury reflects on the current water crisis in Gaza, and shares her thoughts on how Kairos Palestine, as a movement of non-violent resistance, can help bring hope for the vision of a peaceful future. THE WATER OF LIFE - NOT IN PALESTINE. A KAIROS PERSPECTIVE By Hind Khoury It is not a coincidence that our holy book, the Bible, comes from a desert area: Palestine, Jordan and Egypt. In fact, water has been and continues to be truly the source and essence of life. What the Israelites experienced in biblical times, drought and water shortages, is the experience of Palestinians today. Thoughts for reflection: How would Jesus, known as a man of justice and as an advocate for the oppressed, react to Israeli apartheid policies? Think about other stories connected to water in the Bible. Can you draw connections to the situation the Palestinian people face today? Think of your local supermarket: Is it really right that tomatoes from the Israeli Occupation are cheaper than the ones from your local farmers? What does that mean? Place yourselves in the shoes of Palestinians, how would you react to the suffering imposed on them? What you can do: Study and review the Kairos Palestine Document to better understand the context of Palestinian suffering and what God

requires of us as Christians and people of conscience. Support the international BDS (boycotts, divestment, sanctions) campaign. Advocate for a boycott of Israeli agricultural products from the Jordan Valley. Talk about the Palestinian/Israeli conflict in your church. ARIJ and Al-Haq provide excellent maps and other resources on the denial of water access for Palestinians. Participate in conferences and seminars related to the Palestinian search for justice and peace, and respond to calls for action and advocacy. Ask your local supermarket chain about their trade partners – where does your orange come from? Protest against the illegal trade with products from settlements which most of the time are not even labelled as products from an occupied land. Come and see! Visit us in Palestine, see with your own eyes the “drying out of Palestine” and join us in the common struggle against the illegal and inhuman occupation of Palestine.

FEBRUARY PRAYER NOTES FOR SCHOOL CHAPLAINS IN ACT

Thank you for being part of the prayer team for our School Chaplains. If, for any reason you are not able to continue and want to be removed from this list, please let me know. We commenced the year with a Staff Retreat and were all encouraged by God's

Word and presence in our lives. We desire to be fruitful in our lives and ministry and value your partnership with us as we continue to see God open doors and hearts. One of our chaplains returned to school to receive a very encouraging note from a staff member who acknowledged that while not being sure about the role of chaplaincy at first, he was impressed with the significant contribution chaplaincy made to the lives of students in the school. Great encouragement to start the year. To our prayer partners we submit the following requests for Feb 2016: Campbell High – Steve Lindner is assisting a student with an immigration issue and would value prayer for the student who is keen to stay in Australia and continue her education. Pray for her as the stress and uncertainty are impacting her wellbeing quite significantly. Black Mountain Special School – Ken Perrin has settled in to the term engaging with students, families and staff despite being rather unwell. Pray for continued strengthening of his health and gentle wisdom as he supports families. He is aiming to complete Seasons for Growth Training to provide a grief support program to families, students and staff. Ngunnawal Primary – Karen Connors has 12 hours per week and over 1,000 students in the school. Pray for wisdom and discernment as she balances the needs of many students, staff and families who value the support she provides.

Page 4: PARISH WEEKLY NEWSLETTER 21 FEBRUARY 2016€¦ · Seven Weeks for Water 2016 is by Hind Khoury, a Palestinian economist who served as minister of Jerusalem Affairs with the Palestinian

4

Amaroo P-10 - Deb Horscroft is part of a dynamic team providing support to over 1,800 students at this ever growing school. Pray for her as she establishes programs and activities to meet the diverse needs of students in the school and for wisdom to know what to fit in to her 12 hours per week as chaplain. Stromlo High – Bel Young would value prayer as she continues to build strong relationships of trust with the students and staff. With already a large number of students being referred by staff for some quality time and help from the chaplain she is already working hard to manage the load in her limited time. Breakfast Club has commenced with the help of volunteers from Woden Valley Alliance. Malkara Special School – Andrea deVaal Horciu is providing exceptional support to staff, families and students at the school. Pray for her son Josh who is very unwell with an on-going ear problem. Pray to for her as she is planning a Disability Camp this year and is in need of helpers to make this happen. Erindale College – Deirdre Herrmann works very closely with a number of students who come from very difficult and trying circumstances. Pray for continued patience, gentleness and wisdom as she provides support and hope for these students. Lake Ginninderra College – Mary Apikotoa is already connecting well with the new Year 11 students and commenced the Breakfast Club this week with support from Year 12 students. Her office is a regular drop in space for students and already Year 11 students are dropping in for a chat as

they hear from others that Mary is a safe, kind and caring person who will listen and help anyone. Pray for opportunities for Mary to share good news with these students. New Staff – We welcome Katie Pratt to Wanniassa Hills Primary, Bernadette Mannion to Gordon Primary and Alison Lamech to Torrens Primary. Pray for the new chaplains as they commence early in March and find their feet in the schools. Sincerely, Di Dianne Priest | Director Chaplaincy Services School Chaplaincy ACT

SHOE BOX TALLY Of course it is with great joy that I share again the wonderful tally of 18,314 shoe boxes collected in the ACT and Southern NSW region. This was an increase of over 1000 shoe boxes from 2014. None of this would have been possible without God - and you serving Him faithfully. Imagine that, according to the statistics (every shoe box is shared with at least 12 people), approximately 219,768 people will be blessed by the efforts of our region and also (of every 8 shoe boxes distributed 1 child will come to know Him as their Lord and

Saviour) 2,289 children will receive eternal life because of the work that you did to encourage others to participate in this ministry. The tally for Australia and New Zealand was 342,814 - an increase of over 20,000 from 2014. God gave exceedingly, abundantly above all we could have ever

asked or thought. Please join with me in praising God for His bounty and that these simple gifts would lead to many coming to know Him as their Lord and Saviour. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries, suggestions or concerns. Blessings! AUSTRALIAN RELIGIOUS THOUGHT - BOOK LAUNCH AND EXPERT PANEL DISCUSSION

Wayne Hudson is a Research Professor at the ACC&C and the Public and Contextual Strategic

Research Centre, CSU. This book contests the standard interpretation of Australian history. It also fills a major gap in the literature, arguing that there was much more religious thought in Australia than historians have imagined and that much of it was interesting and important. The book also challenges the distinction between sacred and secular in Australia. After the launch a panel of experts will discuss whether Australia now needs to understand itself in post-secular terms.
