Todays Readings First Reading: Isaiah 58:7-10 This reading is a vigorous exhortation from the prophet Isaiah to lead lives of active charity and generosity. He promises that the Lord will be our “dawn,”our “rear guard,” our “light” if we share our bread, shelter the homeless, and clothe the naked. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 Paul tells the Corinthians that he and they must not rely on the so-called “wisdom” of secular teaching and philosophy but on the power of the Spirit. Gospel: Matthew 5:13-16 Jesus reminds the disciples and all Christians that they carry special responsibilities to be “the salt of the earth.” They must not hide their light but show their goodness to all.

The Healthy Family 2017 New for 2017 we will begin a series of articles, at least once monthly, to encourage healthy marriages and family life. Too often couples and/or families fall into a rut within daily living and aren’t sure where to turn for advice. The Catholic Church celebrates the sanctity of life, marriage and families and there is a plethora of knowledge to be had, right at our fingertips. We will feature different material from many sources; some weeks peaking your interest greatly and others you may not feel pertain to you now, but could in the future. The series will also be kept on our parish website (stjohnsfamilyoffaith.com), for reference, along with many more articles too long for the bulletin. We hope this series will find you rejuvenated in your personal life and struggles, with your faith right beside to assist. Happy 2017 to "The Healthy Family"!

A WORD FROM OUR PARISH NURSES MINISTRY Heart disease is the number one killer of women, yet only one in five American women believe that heart disease is their greatest threat. Heart disease affects the blood vessels and cardiovascular system. Atherosclerosis is a condition that develops when plaque builds up in the walls of the arteries. This will narrow the arteries making it harder for blood to flow through, ultimately a heart attack or stroke may occur from lack of blood supply. Women symptoms may differ from a man’s. Some of the symptoms could include anterior chest pain usually of the left side, shortness of breath, back pain, jaw pain, feeling unusually tired, upper abdominal pain, and breaking out in cold sweats. Studies have shown that healthy choices have dramatically lowered the death rate in women. Don’t smoke, manage your blood sugar, lower your cholesterol, monitor your blood pressure, know your family history, stay active, eat healthy, maintain a healthy weight, and manage stress. For more information go to The American Heart Association’s web site at www.heart.org.

Protecting God's Children classes have been added to the diocese calendar. The classes won't be found on the diocese website, but registration info can be obtained by contacting Ruth Davis at 610.332.0442 (x16) • St Catherine of Siena, Reading-March 19th at 10:30am • St Michael the Archangel, Colesville-April 20th at 9:00am

Care for Creation: Global Climate Change

USCCB POSITION The U.S. bishops promote prudent action predicated on justice to address the growing impact of global climate change. As the bishops note in Global Climate Change: A Plea for Dialogue, Prudence and the Common Good, "Action to mitigate global climate change must be built upon a foundation of social and economic justice."

Pope Francis wrote: “Climate change is a global problem with grave implications: environmental, social, economic, political and for the distribution of goods. It represents one of the principal challenges facing humanity in our day. Its worst impact will probably be felt by developing countries in coming decades.” (Care for Our Common Home, Laudato Si’, no. 25)

Come Learn More About the Paris Climate Agreement On Wednesday, February 15 at 7:30 am at the Wyomissing Restaurant and Bakery the World Affairs Council of Greater Reading will host a breakfast presentation on the Paris Climate Agreement featuring Cathy Curran-Myers, Assistant Professor at Alvernia University who teaches Environmental Law and Policy, Sustainability, Conflict Resolution, Business Law, and interdisciplinary water issues at the undergraduate and graduate levels. For reservations call World Affairs at 610.375.7880 or Email [email protected]. A $10.00 fee includes a full buffet breakfast beginning at 7:30 am.
