Todays Readings First Reading: Acts 7:55-60 Stephen was filled with the Holy Spirit, and described seeing Jesus standing at God's right hand. Then he was dragged away and stoned to death before many witnesses who did not believe his words. Before dying he cried, "Lord, do no hold this sin against them." Second Reading: Revelation 22:12-14, 16-17, 20 John hears a voice saying, "Remember I am coming soon!" This messenger for Jesus says that he will come to reward those who are deserving. Those who hear the call of the Spirit are encouraged to answer by accepting Jesus. Gospel: John 17:20-26

Jesus prays for all the people who will believe in him through the words of his

Dear Members of St John’s Family of Faith,

It has been a great privilege and joy to serve as your Parish Director of Music for almost 9 years. It's been so uplifting to hear everyone respond in song and prayer at our weekly liturgies, and now, after 26 years as a liturgist and an amazing 56 years of devotion to music in the church, I have decided to retire from the position of Director of Music at St. John’s effective June 6, 2016. I look forward to spending more time on the weekends with my family and especially my four wonderful grandchildren.

After June, I may occasionally appear as a substitute organist. There are several wedding couples, who have contacted me regarding their weddings and I will honor those commitments. Thank you for your enthusiasm in praising God through song and a special thanks to those who have worked with me as choir members, cantors and musicians. Musically yours,

Marge Vath

GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER

DO YOU LIKE TO SOCIALIZE AND MEET NEW FREINDS FROM ST. JOHN'S PARISH FAMILY?

Breaking Bread social committee would like to suggest a new meal oriented activity to get to know our fellow parishioners better. This idea has been used at other churches with great success, so we at St. John’s would like to imitate it. You have a choice to be either the hostess/host who offers their home as the meal place or as a guest who attends the sharing meal at the hostess/host’s house. The hostess/host determines the number of guests they would like and the style of food entertaining which could be either beverages and hors d’oeuvers; a sit down dinner or a backyard picnic. The hostess/host determines the menu for the meal and everyone who signs up as a guest will be advised by the Breaking Bread organizer what to bring to share at the meal. No phone calls for you, all you have to do is sign up on any poster that will be at each of the doors of the Church on the weekends of May 21st and 28th. Breaking Bread will handle all of the hostess/host – guest match ups and will contact everyone with their assigned hostess/host. This is an adult only evening for couples or single people. The first evening meal will be Saturday June 18, 2016 at the hostess/host’s house. You will be grouped with others at the meal so you could get to know one another. It would not serve the purpose of this type of get together to request specific guests or hostesses/hosts. Making new acquaintances is the goal of this type of gathering.

Questions should be directed to 610-777-2542. Please consider participating in this fun event!

Jesus shared meals with others so why shouldn’t we…

Work of Mercy - Forgive offenses, bear wrongs patiently “How often should I forgive?” (Mt. 18:21)

When we are secure in God’s unconditional love for us, when we are secure in our status as beloved, it is easier to let go of hurt and bear wrongs. We still feel the pain of hurt, and the bruise left by the wrong committed against us will take time to fade, yet knowing who we are and whose we are, frees us from the chains of seeking retribution and enlarges our own heart to allow love, compassion, forgiveness and mercy to take up residence.

Are there wrongs that you have been unable to forgive? Are you ready to have a change of heart? Has it been a long time since you availed yourself of the healing sacrament of Reconciliation? If so, come see me! Confessions are on Saturday from 3:00PM to 3:45PM, or on Sunday at 8:00AM, or give me a call anytime at: 610.777.1697. I think I can help you out, not so much because I’m a priest, but because I’m a sinner just like you, and I know what that freedom is all about! I’d love for you to know it too!

- Fr. Rich

COLOR ME!

Catholic Teaching for Teens - What It Means to Be a Peacemaker "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God."

What does it mean to be a peacemaker? First, let's look at what peace means. In the Bible, it has several different meanings. In terms of human beings, peace has to do with a sense of well-being in all aspects of our lives. It is sometimes described as a feeling of harmony or tranquility. In the Old Testament, the Israelites came to realize that peace is a gift from God. There's a great story in Chapter 6 of the book of Judges that illustrates this realization. The story goes that the Israelites were being terrorized by the people of Midian because they offended God. For instance, as soon as the Israelites had finished sowing their fields, the Midians would swoop in and destroy the produce and eve n the livestock. The Israelites were left with nothing for food, and they were reduced to misery. They turned to God for help. Here's where we meet Gideon in a surprising twist. God sends his angel not to a great warrior or a famous leader who could save the Israelites in a single bound. No, God sent his angel to Manasseh, the lowliest family of the Israelites. And God chose Gideon, the youngest and most insignificant member of the family, to save Israel from the Midians. After much protest, Gideon listened to God, for God promised that he would be with Gideon and would give him strength, saying “Be calm, do not fear. You shall not die.” (Judges 6:23) Gideon built an altar to God and called it Yahweh-shalom, which means “the Lord is peace.” Gideon came face to face with the God of peace, the one who could transform the lowest of the low into a great leader. Gideon went on to save Israel from the Midians and to bring peace to the land. This story tells us not only how the Israelites came to realize that God is the source of peace, but that God empowers us to be bearers of peace. Sometimes we might feel insignificant like Gideon, especially when the problems we face are huge: a relationship in conflict, violence in our communities, or poverty and hunger. There are no easy answers to these problems. Sometimes we are called to tackle issues in a big way. A 12-year-old boy named Craig Kielburger started an organization with some friends to help children throughout the world who were being exploited in the workforce. He didn't give into the temptation to believe (as Gideon had tried on God) that he was too insignificant to do anything. He stepped up to the plate and went to bat for children around the world.

How are you going to be a peacemaker? How will you help develop a sense of well-being and harmony in your own life? What social problems move you to want to make a difference? Remember, even when you feel like you're the last person in the world who is cut out to be a peacemaker, think about Gideon's story and God's promise of peace, strength, and courage.
