Volunteer or Steward ?
Over the years, I have seen the parish struggle to get more and
more people to participate and ―volunteer‖ to do what needs to be
done to keep our parish and ministries strong. Whether it be
helping out once a year at the annual whatever, or being a part of
the weekly and monthly life of the parish, we always seem to find
ourselves troubled by the fact that we do not have enough people
―volunteering‖ to do all of the tasks and fill all of the roles that
need to be done and filled. I would suggest that our focus may be
the problem.
Are we looking for ―volunteers‖ to do a project, or are we looking
for stewards to fulfill ministry?
Each year we find ourselves looking for parishioners to teach in
our faith formation program, sing at Mass, help plan TNL, cook,
clean, plan for the future, pay the bills, make the necessary
decisions, work with the landscape, shovel snow, answer the
phone, stuff envelopes for a mailing, and so on. Then, we look at
those who come forward and say what wonderfully ―dedicated
volunteers‖ we have and try to be careful not to put too many
demands on them, or expect too much from them, because they
are simply ―volunteers.‖ I say we are NOT volunteers. We are
stewards!
Some might say: “What’s the difference? What’s in a name?
We’re all working in the church anyway and trying to get the job
done. Who cares what you call it!”
A volunteer is defined as ―a person who voluntarily offers
himself or herself for a service or undertaking; a person who
performs helpful work willingly and without pay.‖ A steward is
defined as “a person who conducts, supervises, or manages
something; especially: the careful and responsible management
of something entrusted to one’s care.” As you can see, the focus
is much different. As stewards, we are not simply showing up to
accomplish a task, but more importantly, we are taking care of
that which has been given to us by God.
We have all been blessed by God with gifts and talents – and
opportunities to use them – for the building up of God’s
Kingdom. This is what parish involvement is about. So, whether
we are working on the budget, fixing the broken door, working
with college students, greeting people as they enter the church or
serving on the Pastoral Council – we are ALL a vital part of the
management and stewardship of the our parish community. The
Church is not a charity at which we volunteer. Hopefully
volunteer is not a description you hear very often at STA, for
when you enter this community, you are not a guest or visitor or
customer, not even a volunteer… you are a steward – you ARE
the Church and responsible for it!

The Greatest Prayer:
Rediscovering the Revolutionary Message
of the Lord’s Prayer by John Dominic Crossan
Every Sunday, the Lord’s Prayer is recited in churches
around the world. It is an indisputable principle of Christian
faith. It is the way Jesus taught his followers to pray and it
distills the most essential beliefs required of every one of the
world’s 2.5 billion Christians. In The Greatest Prayer, an
expert on the historical Jesus , John Dominic Crossan,
explores this foundational prayer line by line for the richest
and fullest understanding of the prayer. Crossan provides just
the right amount of history, scholarship, and detail for us to
rediscover why this seemingly simple prayer is so important.

Full of Grace:
Encountering Mary in Faith, Art, and Life by Judith Dupre
Using a conversational tone, Judith Dupre brings together
art, quotations, religious history, and secular references to
depict what the Virgin Mary has meant to people over the
centuries. In a series of stories and essays, Dupre examines
Mary’s artistic, cultural and historical influence, and at the
same time shows how Mary’s human journey of love,
compassion, grief and humble strength connects her to our
modern lives. Full of Grace is also beautifully illustrated
with an array of portraits of Mary from the Renaissance to
contemporary images.

A History of the Popes:
From Peter to the Present by John W O’Malley, S.J.
A History of the Popes tells the story of the oldest living
institution in the Western world---the papacy. Acclaimed
church historian John W. O’Malley focuses on the popes
who powerfully shaped pivotal moments in both church and
world history. O’Malley describes how the papal job
description has shifted over time, from guarding the tombs of
Peter and Paul, to governing the city of Rome, to ministering
to the masses as a major world figure. The author does not
shy away from controversies and he includes legends like
Pope Joan and a comprehensive list of popes and anti-popes
to help readers get a full picture.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
ADULT What are my “locked doors”?
How am I like Thomas?
“Peace be with you!” What does that greeting mean to you?
CHILDREN Even though you can't see him with your eyes, how do you
"see" Jesus in others?
STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION
Jesus meets the need of each disciple. To the fearful in the upper
room, He speaks words of peace. To doubting Thomas, He
provides the tangible proof of His resurrection. What do I need to
become His disciple? What do I have to share that might meet
someone else’s need?
