The Parish Pump was started in 1979 to provide a free community magazine in the parish. It began as, and still is, a joint venture,

combining the church magazine and village magazine. The Parish Pump is sponsored by the Parochial Church Council and Debden Parish Council. Both bodies contribute financially to the cost of running the magazine by means of a donation, received annually. It is intended that the magazine reflects all aspects of village life within the parish and provides an opportunity for ‘community’ matters to be raised. In addition to the information recorded in the magazine, our sister publication, the Debden Directory provides a host of useful contact numbers for services ranging from bus times, local plumbers, doctors and restaurants. If you do not have a copy, please contact a member of the committee. The magazine has editors but no official reporters. Consequently, an interesting magazine depends on articles, news, etc. coming from people in the village. The closing date for submitting material is: the 12th of each month. The editor’s job is to edit. This means fitting the material into the space available and trying to ensure there is a reasonable balance of views on controversial subjects etc. Consequently, it is not always possible to publish everything submitted and sometimes changes have to be made to the length of a contribution. ‘Non topical’ articles cannot always be published in the next issue but will appear later unless you are told otherwise. Contributions of up to 400 words have a better chance of being published in full than longer ones.

Please note that the present and past editions of the Parish Pump are now available on line on the new website www.debden.org and that any material submitted will be automatically featured on the website. If you wish to have your name and/or contact details (which must normally accompany any contributions) withheld from the printed edition and/or not to appear on the website, this must be stated at the time of submission. Copy for inclusion in the next edition should be emailed by the 12th of the month to;

[email protected]. There is also a folder in the shop for submission of written or typed copy. The current editors of the Parish Pump, who have the sole prerogative of the editorial policy (so don’t blame anyone else) are; Mike Fairchild [email protected] Ursula Lyons [email protected]

Advertising rates per issue are; full page £10.00; half page £8.00; quarter page or less £6.00. Full payment in advance and an electronic copy of the ad should be sent to the Editors or Treasurer by email. Cheques should be made payable to “The Parish Pump”

The other Committee members include Chairman: Judith Forster [email protected] Treasurer: Alastair Donald [email protected] Secretary: Marion Bamfield [email protected] Distribution: Caroline Burchall [email protected]

EDITORIAL

Never a truer word When Debden decided to enter the Essex Village of the Year and Best Kept Village competition, little did we realise what an appropriate theme we’d chosen for our submission – Never a dull moment.

Even we were surprised at how much happens in Debden when we pinned up 30 photographs from recent editions of the Pump for the benefit of the judges who read our submission and came to quiz our team before voting us runner up in the county-wide Village of the Year contest. They stayed for just one hour, as did another team of judges who awarded us the Best Kept Village prize in our class. Had the judges stayed a little longer, they would have witnessed a whole lot more: a dazzling village wedding, a Festival of Sails with a clever link to Debden’s agrarian past, another hilarious barn dance, an end of term prize giving and concert at the village school, a celebration for the dozens who have helped produce the village magazine over the years, the return of one of our elder statesmen from a 1,000 mile charity bike ride, to say nothing of an impromptu village barbecue and a cricket match.

All that in just two weeks! The judges might also have spotted a more serious group outside the pavilion planning our new village hall – a project we cited as evidence of a forward-looking community – or heard the fantastic sounds of the ‘Sixties spilling out of the village hall where Revival were having a pre-party jam.

Ursula predicted in last month’s editorial that community spirit would play the major part in the competition, and she was right. The judges said it wasn’t about hanging baskets or neatly clipped verges (although they helped!), or even about what went on in the village. They wanted to get a feel for what really made Debden tick; what the people were like; what motivated them to organise activities and why they had so much fun enjoying them; and how we cared for our environment, the elderly and future generations.

I have to admit I smiled when I re-read the last question: tell us what makes your village special and why it is such a good place to live (200 words maximum). Sorry, this has just taken more than 300 and I’ve barely started.

NEWS

Double win for Debden in Best Village competition

Debden scored a double victory in the prestigious Essex Village of the Year and Best Kept Village competition. We were up against stiff competition from nearly 50 rural communities across the county. We were voted top village in our class in the Best Kept Village contest and runner-up in the overall Essex Village of the Year competition. Debden was narrowly pipped to the post for Village of the Year by a much larger village, Great Bentley. Only two other villages picked up a double prize.

Certificates and cash prizes totalling £300 were presented to a team representing Debden at the Rural Community Council of Essex (RCCE) annual awards on July 10. Debden decided to enter both contests at fairly short notice with a written submission that won us a place in the finals. The annual competition rewards “vibrant, enterprising and caring villages”. Our submission covered five topics: the organisations and activities that contribute to community life, the businesses and services in our village, how we protect our local environment, how we consult with the village over future projects, and what makes Debden a special place. Commenting on Debden’s win, Nick Shuttleworth, director of RCCE, said, “The community-run shop has been in business for over 30 years, which is a fantastic achievement and there are ambitious plans for a new village hall.” >

Five of Debden’s team (centre) collect one of our two winning certificates: Stewart Luck, Mike Fairchild, Jim Watson, Nina Manser and Emma Doust. Left, David Boyle, RCCE president, and (second left and far right) Perry Woolner and Elizabeth Scott, of sponsors Essex & Suffolk Water.

Self-builders wanted for new village hall The Parish Council, Village Hall Trustees and the New Village Hall Group have produced a plan for a new village hall which was explained at a village meeting on Wednesday July 24, as the August Pump went to press.

The hall will be about 30 per cent larger than the present building and the plan is to use it in conjunction with the sports pavilion. The present hall will continue to be used when construction, planned for next year, starts. The meeting heard that the scheme relies on a new fund-raising effort and a major contribution from residents because the interior fit-out will be undertaken on a self-build basis. The shop will get a prominent position in the new building - designed with future generations in mind. Full report in the next edition. ____________________________________________

> Judges for the Best Kept Village made an unannounced inspection of Debden and others quizzed a panel of village representatives for the Village of the Year award. Our panel included the Rev Hilary Davey; Julie Gibbons, school headteacher; Ursula Lyons, Pump joint editor; Cllr Andrew Tetlow, parish council chairman; supported by Nina Manser (shop), Charlotte Diggins (Pre-School), Jim Watson (village hall), Major Tony Kriehn (Carver Barracks), Emma Doust (youth club), Sam Peck and Alec Bird (school), and Cllr Stewart Luck, who led the bid. In its “Never a dull moment” submission, Debden highlighted the organisations that contribute to life in the village, the highly-rated primary school, village shop and events, and ambitious plans for a new village hall. Stewart Luck said, “The awards are a tribute to the friendliness and community spirit for which Debden is well known. They recognise the volunteers who quietly get on with the job of running the organisations and activities we enjoy as well as maintaining the appearance of the village, all of which contribute to making Debden a very special place in which to live.” The competition is sponsored by Essex & Suffolk Water, Worldbridge Ltd and supported by Essex Life.

Debden sails into history Wind that powered the Elizabethan adventurer Thomas Cavendish on his voyage around the world, breathed life into the sails of London’s Thames barges and propelled the windmills of Debden was the unifying theme running through a fascinating Festival of Sails in Debden Parish Church. On a gloriously hot day, visitors enjoyed a barbecue, refreshments including homemade elderflower cordial, while children sailed through the air on a bosun’s chair, went treasure hunting for explorers’ names and made boats to float in a water-filled dinghy. >

A meticulous model of Cavendish’s ship, Desire, made by Mica Brown who organised the festival, was on show along with a history of Thames barges, their crews, destinations and cargoes. An early photograph showed Mica’s barge, Cygnet, one of the smaller barges to work the East coast.

John Parkin, trustee of Thaxted Mill, was on hand to explain the workings of the four windmills in the area including three in Debden, explained here with models, photographs and technical drawings.

Had Britain been invaded in WW2, Debden’s defence would have relied on spigot mortars in Water Lane, whose method of operation was explained by Michael Barton who put on a photo display.

In 1586 when, inspired by Francis Drake, Cavendish set off to circumnavigate the globe, he was not to know that the first entries were being made in Debden’s parish register, recording births, marriages and deaths in what then was a tiny rural village. The register and a 16th Century Book of Homilies and Sermons, seen here being inspected by Mica (left) and other history buffs, were just two historic items on show. One of the first names in the register of births was Alicia Kellogg (or Kellhogg as it was then spelt), a forebear of the famous cereals family who came from Debden. _____________________________________________________________

Hello sailor! As we expected, there was a flood of entries to our caption competition for the best description of village crew members’ attempts to shield themselves from the east coast wind on our recent trip aboard Thames barge Thistle. After several days deliberations, the judges awarded one reader the coveted first prize. He wishes to remain anonymous after threats of a revenge keel-hauling (tricky because a Thames barge doesn’t have one - Ed)

NEWS FROM THE PARISH CHURCH OF ST MARY

Dear Friends,

At long last summer has come – and just in time for the Festival of Sails, as well as many other community events. How lovely it has been to see so many familiar village faces at this very different and hugely enjoyable festival. These occasions only come to fruition because of the dedication and working together of a good many people – a big thank you to you all with special thanks to Mica, the inspiration and driving force behind this Festival.

In fact the Festival of Sails typifies everything that is so good about Debden – people working together, valuing each other regardless of age, ability, strength, knowledge or gifts, caring for one another and including EVERYONE. These are the qualities that build community spirit and that make Debden such a wonderful village. These are the qualities that have made Debden ‘Best kept Village’ in the small village category and runner-up in the ‘Best Essex Village’ competition. What a tremendous and exciting achievement.

Whether you know it or not, there is a good biblical model for this! St Paul explained to the early Christians that they are like the parts of the body – all different, all able to do different things, but all essential, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant they may seem. If you think about it even the little toe has a vital purpose in the working of the whole body. St Paul said it is important to value and include every single part of the body – together they make up the body of Christ. When the body works well, everything works well. So I think we can deduce that when everything works well the body of Christ is working well. Perhaps this is a contributory factor in Debden’s success! God bless you all, Hilary

FROM THE SCHOOL

Dear Pump Reader, At the time of writing we are in our final few days at school before we break up for the summer holidays. The end of term is always busy with several special events. Our whole school dance production, ‘The Lion King’ followed by presentation of awards and our orchestral recital went extremely well. The weather was perfect; the standard of dance from all classes was amazing. Below, selection of photos taken during the evening.

Our Open Afternoon was held on Tuesday 16th July. This is a time when parents and friends can visit the school, look at their children’s work, look at the displays around the school and talk to the teachers. We were pleased to see so many parents and friends during the afternoon. Below are some photographs taken during the afternoon. Continued overleaf >

As we reach the end of term we are sad to say goodbye to Mrs Mitchell who is retiring. Mrs Mitchell has been Deputy Head at Debden School for 14 years. We will miss her very much but wish her a very happy retirement. More news from the school and children in the next edition. With all good wishes Julie Gibbons (Headteacher)

After Cornwall, “a gentle ride” for good causes

Hannah Lindsell (13) and her dad, Brian, of Wash Cottages, Debden have organised a local Three Counties bicycle ride to help raise funds for the Carver Barracks Injured Soldiers Fund and to fund Hannah's place on a hockey tour. It comes after the pair's ride of 350 miles to Cornwall. They set off on the 4th of August. Their clothing and camping gear nearly trebled the weight of Brian's bike! The 35-mile local ride is on Saturday 7 September from Debden to Great Chishill and Nuthampstead, starting 10/10:30am. The ride is not a race, just a gentle run out in the countryside. Complimentary food will be served at The Woodman, Nuthampstead for every rider who buys a drink. Entry is £5 and you can contact Brian and Hannah to find out more at [email protected] or by calling them on SW 542569. Their website debdencycle.co.uk also holds details of some rather interesting items that are about to be Ebayed, including meal out vouchers for The Saffron Hotel and The Eight Bells!

I was delighted to be part of the group who received the two prestigious Village Awards in Chelmsford last month. I felt especially proud, because the Shop was mentioned twice as being a significant factor in our success. I'm sure that part of this stems from the personal service given to customers by our staff. The following account, which I witnessed at first hand, well illustrates this!

It's a busy Friday afternoon in the Shop. Enter a concerned Mum! Her daughter regularly comes into the Shop after school to stock up on snacks before going to the dancing class next door. Today, said daughter had forgotten her money and so sent an SOS to Mum to buy supplies. Having welcomed the Mum into the Shop, Karen, who was on duty, then allayed her worries. “She has a can of that (pointing to the appropriate shelf in the chiller), a bar of that chocolate (pointing out the correct one) and an Ice Pop from the freezer – and, by the way, I cut the top off for her, for instant access!” The Mum was amazed, paid up and left the Shop knowing she'd be the best Mum in the world! Tesco, watch this space – this is real customer service.

Our fresh vegetables are being delivered frequently at the moment and are really good value, as well as being delicious. Please come and give them a try. You might even be tempted to buy a bunch of our lovely flowers!

A real village weddingA real village wedding

A packed church , bustling marquee on the meadow and a Rolls Royce full of beautiful bridesmaids.

It seemed as though half the village shared in the happiness when Annette Howell and Darren Glover were married in Debden Parish Church. Annette and Darren met four years ago. They work near each other in Canary Wharf, Darren as operations manager with a stockbroker and Annette as a projects manager with HSBC. They honeymooned in Egypt.

We twirled the night away at the annual Barn Dance

Debden’s annual barn dance was again a big hit with 100 people moving to the tunes of Scampering Rogues. For some it was a rhythmic twirl, others got into a bit of a twist, and for the many kids who joined in, easy peasy. There was beer and burgers, bales to romp on or as a perch to ‘sit this one out’ like Patrice and Will (who kindly loaned his grain barn for the night). Thanks to Newport Scouts for running the barbecue, Newport Village Stores for the bar, Chris Clarke for the bales, Marion Bamfield for the raffle and Stewart Luck for organising a great event that topped up Debden Residents’ Fund.

Shock results in Debden spud contest!Shock results in Debden spud contest! Debden’s farmers accepted defeat gracefully in Debden’s first potato growing competition. They were beaten by not one, but two former self-proclaimed ‘Cockney Boys’ - Dave Wilson and Steve Jasper. When Dave and Cousha tipped out their growing container, their crop weighed in at a staggering 5.15kg. Runners-up were Steve and Bridget Jasper with a creditable 4.2kg. Our farmers could only manage third place with Will Bunting beating his rivals with 3.7kg. Perhaps the biggest surprise was the ‘crop’ by Jules and Shaun Ruffles which barely tipped the scales at 0.05kg! Each of 15 competitors were given three ‘second early’ potatoes to grow in containers. Judges and competitors toured contestants’ gardens, accepting hospitality on the way, finishing up at a nail-biting prize-giving in The Plough. After digging around a bit, the Pump can reveal that Dave and Cousha’s secret ingredients are wood ash, garden clippings and luck. There are rumours this could become an annual event. Big ones, small ones … organisers Marion and Brad Bamfield, who’ll try harder next year.

They’re in there somewhere … runner- up Steve Jasper with Bridget looking on.

Come out now Dave, you’ve won.

Stansted Airport: Here we go again Proposals to develop Stansted Airport into a two-runway, or even a four-runway, airport have been described by Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) as "opportunistic, irresponsible and pointless." Commenting on the airport’s submission to the Airports Commission, SSE Chairman Peter Sanders said: “It is of little consolation that MAG has framed its proposals in an unenthusiastic, half-hearted way which grudgingly admits that it would be 'willing' to add an extra runway or runways at Stansted, about 15 years from now, if that's what the Airports Commission and the Government decide is best. This will be seen by many as an attempt to avoid taking responsibility for any decision to expand the airport.” The MAG proposals resurrect the expansion options for Stansted put forward by the Government almost exactly eleven years ago, in July 2002, which came to nothing. Between 2002 and 2010 needless stress and anxiety was caused to those whose homes were threatened by the bulldozer and over a £1billion was wiped off local house prices - all for nothing, says SSE. Now, just three years later, there is the prospect of another prolonged battle over the same issue. Mr Sanders added: "This will once again create widespread blight and uncertainty in the local community, and once again it will prove to be a pointless exercise. As in the past, any proposals for an extra runway or runways at Stansted will be met with fierce local opposition, will be fought tooth and nail, and will ultimately be defeated."

News from Debden Pentecostal Church

Dear Friends,

We have all experienced some frustration with the traffic delays resulting from the road works for the water main replacement in the village. Yet what a wonderful thing it is to have access to clean water at the turn of a tap! We take it so much for granted when many people in the world have to walk great distances to fetch water and have no guarantee how drinkable it is.

One day Jesus was sitting by a well, weary from a long walk in that hot eastern country. He asked a woman to draw some water from the well to quench his thirst. She was puzzled why Jesus, a Jew, had asked her, a foreigner, for help. He replied: “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.... Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

Jesus offers us all this living water which we receive by turning to him and accepting the forgiveness that he is so willing to give. That living water satisfies all of the yearnings that are unfulfilled in our lives. You can read about this meeting by the well in the Bible in John’s Gospel chapter 4.

Finally, we are looking forward to another visit from Yan Hadley on the evening of 18th August. We have now had several visits from Yan and are always blessed to hear his talk. Please do feel most welcome to come and join with us for this or any other event.

God bless, Simon Gale

DEBDEN BRANCH ROYAL BRITISH LEGION

Enjoy a little pampering! The Gallery Therapy Room at Debden Antiques is not only due to celebrate its second successful year but has recently undergone refurbishment to add two new rooms to accommodate the demand for the treatments and therapies offered. Ideally situated, the Gallery is tucked away on the first floor of this beautiful barn, creating a sanctuary for those wishing to unwind, de-stress and – of course – be pampered. There is a host of massage therapies to choose from as well as Indian head & foot massage which is absolute bliss. Signature facial treatments from Neal’s Yard Remedies, manicures and pedicures and pamper sessions are also available. Neal’s Yard is also stocked at the Gallery.

Massage therapy has become increasingly popular due to its long term benefits; not only does it offer relaxation but aids joint mobility, stress relief and promotes well-being and is ideal for those who are recuperating perhaps from recent trauma, injury or suffer arthritic conditions. After a consultation, we will be able to tailor you a treatment plan if need be with the use of specific oils and massage techniques aiding recovery. For those who cannot lie down or turn over easily our Hydrotherm system allows you to lie face up on two heated water cushions which is deeply relaxing, the therapist moving their hands under and around the body loosening tight and tense muscles.

Reiki is also very popular. This gentle energy balancing treatment can produce deep relaxation, reduce stress and produce inner calm. Whilst you remain fully clothed the therapist uses a series of hand movements over the body. Reiki is also taught at the Gallery using attunements enabling you to use Reiki for self healing or spiritual development and to treat others. This is a pure form of healing and open to everybody. These courses are held on a monthly basis. We offer a holistic approach to all treatments and therapies and our customers - both male and female - return on a regular basis.

There are special offers on pamper days with lunch included in the courtyard Caffe (weather permitting, you can enjoy sunshine on the terrace). There is also plenty to see in the Barn with collectibles and gifts galore. Please see website for full details on treatments or pop in and see us. www.thegallerytherapyroom.co.uk 01799 543007

The Crazy Cambridge Crawl took place on Saturday 15th June involving Friar Tuck and 26 of his merry men (+ wench). This involved visiting 10 Cambridge hostelries and resulted in copious amounts of alcohol being consumed!! We ended up back in the Plough in Debden where we met up with even more merry men, more beers and a very welcome buffet.

I just wanted to thank everyone who attended the event either in Cambridge or back in the Plough, with special thanks to Muriel for supplying the props, Steve P for being a great whip man and Margaret for a most excellent buffet.

Hopefully we can make this an annual event – the Cambridge Pub crawl that is rather than the stag do!

(Photos can be supplied if so desired - Probably not for publication! Ed)

Legionaires’ sixty years of Poppy Appeal collecting

Seven members of Debden Branch Royal British Legion have been presented with awards for their continuous efforts over a number of years in collecting for the annual RBL Poppy Appeal. The presentations were made at a recent branch meeting by Roger Burgess, branch chairman.

Branch Secretary, Mrs Chris Griffin was presented with a “For Merit” badge for 25 years involvement. A certificate for 10 years’ service was presented to Michael Clarke and certificates for five years involvement were presented to Trevor and Bridget Fry, Christopher Hamill, Tina Knight and Malcolm Linscott. Sadly, Trevor Fry was not well enough to attend and his certificate was collected on his behalf by his wife, Bridget.

The recipients have collected for a combined period of more than 60 years.

NEWS

Farming was in Dave’s blood Many people in Debden and further afield will remember Dave Bunting for helping them to start a career in farming. Dave ran the farm club at Saffron Walden County High School where he was able not only to pass on his knowledge of farming but also to introduce youngsters to local farmers who were looking for help. Dave died peacefully at home, aged 80, in the bungalow in Thaxted Road where he had lived with his wife Pam for most of his life.

The bungalow was built on former farmland owned by Dave’s grandfather. David John Bunting was a member of the Bunting family who have farmed in this area for generations. He was born at The Hole farm in Finchingfield and moved with his parents to Broctons Farm in Rook End Lane, Debden. He attended Debden School and went on to study agricultural machinery at Cleales in Saffron Walden before joining the family business at Broctons Farm where he lived until 1959 when he married Pam. Dave loved children and for many years ran the Debden youth club, helped by Pam during harvest and other busy times on the farm. When Dave retired he pursued his hobby of gardening and created two ponds, which he filled with carp and gold fish. Pam and Dave’s children, Davinia and Clive, grandchildren and family were joined by a large number of friends from the farming community at his funeral in Debden Parish Church.

Tony took the long road to Scotland Tony Vernon is pictured at John O’Groats with the Orkney Islands behind him at the end of a successful charity bike ride from Lands End. The shortest route is 874 miles but Tony and 25 fellow cyclists followed minor- and steeper - roads. He completed1,012 miles over 14 days. Tony, at 73 the oldest rider, beat his target by raising over £5,000 for HomeStart Uttlesford, which supports families in difficulties who have a child under five. Yuva gives to Mayor’s charity Mayor of Saffron Walden, Cllr Keith Eden, was presented with a cheque for £600 for Saffron Walden Opportunity Playgroup by Yuva’s assistant manager, Jakir Islam, to mark the restaurant’s fifth anniversary. Peter Banks represented residents of Debden.

Please keep fish out of our pond The pond is an integral part of the village. In the last year it has been drained, silt treated, fish removed and weed restricted. At the moment the vegetation is lush and flowering flags almost overwhelming. The insect life is in its element.

In response to an enquiry, the village school stated, “As part of the school curriculum, the children are required to learn about our local environment and how best to protect it. This includes studying the village pond”. The Nature Conservation Act Schedule 5 prohibits interference with places used for shelter and protection. The Act contains measures for preventing the establishment of non-native species which may be detrimental to native wildlife. The school then went on to say, “Our hope is that fish will not be reintroduced to the pond,” and that, “any fish species would diminish the number of pond creatures”.

Last year the pond was rejuvenating but even so several types of dragonfly and demoiselles were observed. In the occasional late summer evenings bats were flitting overhead. The joy at anytime is to stand and stare patiently for gradually the eyes pick up the sights and ears the sounds of pond life.

Unfortunately it is alleged a village person has been noticed putting at least a dozen fish in the water. Indeed the fish are there. So much work has gone into making this site and environs of ecological interest, for it is the country not the suburbs. It is disappointing to find an individual has their own agenda at heart to the extent of destroying others’ hard work.

The pond is the responsibility of the Parish Council and its carers. PLEASE do not put anything in the pond, anything without agreement of the Parish Council. Michael Barton _____________________________________________________________
