1 IntroductionandExplanationIn accordance with the 2010 Sonning Deanery Mission Plan the two parishes St James

FinchampsteadandStMaryandStJohnCaliforniaaretobemergedintoasingleparishwith

twofulltimestipendiaryclergy:aRectorandanAssociatePriest.TheintentionisforthepostofRectortobefilledfirstsothathe/shecanbeinvolvedintheappointmentoftheAssociate

Priest. BothPCCs have resolved not to invoke ResolutionsA and B.The existing separate

parisheshaveworkedjointlytocreatethisParishProfile.

2 Finchampstead:TheCommunityWeServeTheparishesarepartoftheSonningDeanerywithintheDioceseofOxford.

FinchampsteadisthreemilesSouthofWokinghaminBerkshire,witheasyaccesstotheM3

andM4. It includes both residential and rural areas and has population of about 12,500(basedonthe2001census),consistingmainlyofcommutingandlocallyworkingfamiliesbut

with a sizeable retired community. The area is largely prosperous but with pockets of

deprivation.

Within Finchampstead thereare local shops, several restaurants, a public house, two post

offices,severalgaragesandtwoGPsurgeries.Allmajorsupermarketsarewithinaseven-mile

radius.TherearetwomajorNHShospitals,oneinReadingandoneinFrimley.Bothareabout

tenmilesaway.

Centrally in Finchampstead, a new community facility has been built by Finchampstead

BaptistChurchprovidingasportshall,coffeebar,library,childrenscentreandworshiparea.

Intheparishesthereare threestateprimary schools,oneofwhich isaChurch ofEngland

voluntary aided school. Local children attend secondary schools in Wokingham, Yateley,

CrowthorneandtheChurchofEnglandvoluntaryaidedRanelaghSchoolinBracknell,allof

whicharehighlyregarded.Thereareanumberofprivateschoolsinthearea.

Over the last thirty years therehas been a considerable increase inpopulation and this is

expected tocontinue.InparticulartherecentlyadoptedWokinghamBoroughCoreStrategy

includesalargedevelopmentbasedaroundtheArborfieldGarrisonthathaspreviouslybeen

declared surplus to requirements. A significant part of this development falls within theparishofStJames;onthecurrentplansthisincludes1500-2000ofthedevelopmenttotalof

3500 houses, a secondary school and district centre including a church and one of two

primary schools.Following the recent DefenceReview thereare currently questionmarks

over when or if theMoDwill vacate the site, however the PCC at St James continues to

participateintheon-goingplanningprocess,andhopestobeabletoworkwiththeparishes

ofArborfieldandBarkham,andotherChristiangroupsintheareaforacombinedvisionfor

thechurchinthenewcommunityshouldthedevelopmentgoahead.

3 WhatOurTwoChurchesHaveToOffer3.1 WorshipWorship is at the heart of our church life and, reflecting the diversity of our church

communities,weofferbetweenthetwochurchesawiderangeofChurchofEnglandliturgy:

WeeklySundayandmidweekHolyCommunionfromCommonWorshipOrderOne. Threetimesamonthnon-Eucharisticfamilyservices. WeeklyBCPservices;eitherMatins,EvensongorHolyCommunion. AmonthlyMinistryofHealingService AquarterlyTaizservice. AweekdayMorningPrayers. Amonthlyinformalyouthworship.

3.2 EncouragingDiscipleshipBothchurchesaimtogivepeoplethechancetohearthegoodnewsaboutJesusandtodeepen

their Christian faith. We do this through courses, house meetings, bible study, prayer

meetingsandextensivepreparationforConfirmation.

3.3 PlacesofWorshipStJamesChurchisasmallancientbuilding,startedin

the12thcenturythathasrecentlyundergoneextensiveconservation. This completed a decade of

refurbishments and restorations that now leaves the

churchverymuchfit-for-purposeformanygenerations

tocome.Thereisseatingcapacityforabout150anda

further100canbeaccommodatedintheChurchCentre

usingavideolink.Largerserviceshaverecentlybeen

held in Wellington College Chapel in nearby

Crowthorne.Thishasaseatingcapacityof700.

StMary&StJohnsChurchhasmetforthelastthirtyyears

inthehallofGorseRideJuniorSchool.Fundingfromthe

churchenabledthehalltobeenlargedprovidingspacefor

a sanctuary with two stained glass windows as well as

enlarging the school entrance. There is a further thirty

years leaseagreementwith theschool.Regularmidweek

servicesandspecialservicesforchurchfestivalsareheld

intheParishCentre.Thecapacityof theParishCentre is

50andtheschoolhallis175.

3.4 ParishandChurchCentresSt Mary and St Johns Parish Centre is located in

VicarageCloseandwaspurposebuilt in2000.Ithasa

smallhallwithasanctuary,aquietroom,smallmeeting

room,kitchen,toilets,anofficeandstorage.Inadditiontobeingusedforworship,parishsocialsandmeetings,

it is used by a variety of local organisations whose

contributionscurrentlycovertherunningcosts.

St James Church Centre is housed in an early 20th

century Manor

House that was

bequeathedtothe

church and to which amodern hall was added about

twenty years ago. The facility hasmeeting rooms, an

office, toilets, kitchen and coffee bar. The building

includes four flats that are rented out as a source of

revenue.TheCentreisalsousedbyotherchurchesand

organisationsintheDiocese,forAwayDays,QuietDays,

and by members of the congregation for family

functions.

3.5 RectoryandVicarageSt James Rectory is in the semi rural area known asFinchampstead Village. It is a large modern, self-

contained,fourbed-roomeddetachedhouseinitsown

grounds and is located about onemile fromSt James

Church.

in the middle ofthemajorresidentialareaofFinchampstead.Itisalarge

modern four bed-roomed detached house that was

originally purpose built to provide worship space,

counsellingroomsandaccommodation.Thereisalarge

enclosed private garden that is not overlooked. The

GroupsfromthechurcheshavealsoattendedSpringHarvest,YellowBracesandGreenbelt.

Bothchurchesofferabroadrangeofsocialeventsthroughouttheyear.Theseencouragethe

congregations and thewider community toenjoy fellowshipand some raise funds for the

churchesaswellas foroutreachprojects.Additionallythechurcheshaveindependentlyand

togetherheldanumberofquietdays.

5 HowWeWork5.1 ParishStaffAspartofthepastoralreorganisationprovisionhasbeenmadefortwofulltimestipendiary

posts. Following the appointment of the Rector designate an Associate Priest will be

appointed,aprocessinwhichtheRectordesignatewillbeinvitedtoparticipate.

Alongsidethesepoststhecurrentministryteamsareasfollows:

TheteamatStJamesincludesahalftimeNonStipendiaryAssociatePriestandaEucharistic

LayMinister.ThereisalsoaretiredLicensedLayMinister/ReaderandaretiredPriestwho

take services on an occasional basis. St James has been encouraging laymembers of the

congregation to explore their vocations, and several take occasional services or have

preached, and are participating in the Diocesan training schemes.One is currently on the

OrdinandprogrammeandisexpectedtobeordainedatPetertide,havingbeenprovisionally

appointed totheparish asaNon StipendiaryAssociate Curate.The ChaplainofWellington

CollegeandhisfamilyaremembersofStJamesandtheChaplainhastakenoccasionalservicesbeforeandduringthevacancywhenhisdutiesatWellingtonallow.

StMaryandStJohnhavearetiredPriestwhohastakenonmanyoftheservicesduringthe

vacancy.InadditionthereisalayteamthatpreparesandparticipatesintheAlive@11allage

services.

BothChurchesencouragelayparticipationinworshipandhavereaders,intercessors,chalice

administrators,altarserversandsidespeople.

St James has a paid part-time Parish Administrator in the Church Office, supported by a

numberofvolunteers.StMaryandStJohnrelyonanumberofvolunteersfortheiradministration.

5.2 CommitteestructuresBoth parishes currently have their own PCC and Standing Committee. Each committee

normallymeetssixtimesayearonalternatemonths.ThePCCshavedelegatedtheday-to-day

worktoanumber ofcommitteesthat focusondifferentareas. Eachmember ofthePCC is

encouragedtojoinoneofthecommitteesthatalsodrawmembershipfromthewiderChurch

5.3 PastoralTeamsBothchurcheshavelayparticipationinpastoralworkthroughPastoralTeams.

AtStMaryandStJohnthefocusisprimarilychurchbased,inparticularthroughthemonthly

healingservice.AtStJamestheapproachiscommunitybasedthroughpastoralvisiting.

InbothparishestheclergyoraEucharisticLayMinistertakeHolyCommuniontolocalcare

homesandtoindividualswhoareunabletoattendservices.

5.4 FairTradeandEcoCongregationCareforGodsworldisanimportantaspectofthewayStMaryandStJohnschurchworks.

TheGreenteamhasledthewayinanumberofenvironmentalprojects,suchasrecyclingand

aFairTradefundayinGorseRideInfantSchool.Asaresultofthemanyinitiativesthechurch

wasawardedtheEcoCongregationawardin2009.StMaryandStJohnisaFairTradeChurch

and where possible adopts L.O.A.F. (local, organic, animal-friendly and fairly traded)

principlesatevents.

StJamesisalsoaFairTradechurchandencouragesrecycling.

6 MissionandOutreachBoth churches have over the years had a strong

emphasis in theirwork in reaching out into the local

communityandtheworld.ThePCCseachyearallocate

10%oftheirfreewillofferingtomissionandChristian

charities,whichisdiscussedinsection9.2Missionand

CharitableGivingonpage15.

ThechurchesrunaweeklyMotherandToddlergroup

(Fledgelings)andatwicemonthlyTeaandChatgroup

whichincorporatesanOlderPeoplesForumeveryeight

weeks. These groups are for the benefit of thewhole

community.

StMaryandStJohnslocaloutreachfocusesonthetwo

schools; Gorse Ride Infants and Gorse Ride Juniorswhere, for the lastsixyears, the churchhas designed,

set up and facilitated a Labyrinth. Each year this

provides 150 children the opportunity to journey

throughtheLabyrinthandlearnaboutChristianFaith

andprayer.TheClergyareinvitedtoleadanassembly

inbothschoolseachtermandtherearetermlyliaison

meetingswiththeHeads.

twice termly whole school communion services held either in the church or school and a

memberofthecongregationtakesweeklyassemblies.

Bothchurchesactivelyparticipate in their link schools fairs. St Jamesholdsa church fete

everyotheryearontheMemorialParkinthevillagealternatingwiththevillagefete.

StMaryandStJohnhavestronglinkswiththeCommunityDevelopmentWorkeremployedby

the BoroughCouncil and organise joint events such asCarols in the Community that also

involvestheGorseRideJuniorSchoolChoir.

Bothchurcheslookuponbaptisms,weddingsandfuneralsasopportunitiesforoutreachand

actively support the families involved and encourage them to come to main and specific

specialservicesduringtheyear.

7 VisionandGoalsThetwoparisheshavehadtheirownvisions,asdescribedbelow.Theemphaseshavebeen

different,reflectingthecultureandsizeofthechurchcommunities.Inpreparingthisprofile

thewritingteamhasbeenencouragedtodiscoverthatthereisalreadymuchincommonandmanyareasinwhichourthoughtsforthefuturecouldagree.

Akeytaskforthenewincumbentwillbetotakealeadingroletodevelopanewvisionforthe

combinedparish.

Continuingtomakeadifferenceintheworldandlocalcommunitythroughourgreeninitiative, charitable giving and closer links with existing groups in our local

community.

7.2 TheStJamesVisionStJamesstrivestobeabroadandinclusivechurchwithanelectoralrollandattendancethat

definesusasoneofthelargerchurchcommunitiesinthediocese.Thecapacitylimitationsof

thebuildinghaveinpartledtothediversityandinclusivitythatisnowsuchavaluedpartofour church life.Wemaintain a viable BCP congregation andwell attended family services

alongsidetheweeklyEucharistictradition.

Wevaluethebreadthandinclusivityofourworship,theologyandchurchmanship.Wefeel

ourdiversityanddifferences exploredtogether inaprayerful environment strengthenour

faith.

recognising thatmanyof thosewhoattendourFamilyServiceshave littlepreviouschurch

background.Wearealsoawarethatweneedtomakebetterprovision forthe8to11year

oldsforwhomthefamilyserviceformatisnolongerappropriate.Wearecurrentlyworking

onthis.

7.3 OurJointVisionfortheImmediateFutureoftheMergedParishes Tosharebestpractice,usingourskillsandresourcesacrossbothchurchestoenhance

allaspectsoftheChurchcommunity.

Toworktowardsunity,whilstmaintainingthedistinctpersonalityofeachchurch.

To identifywhere there is unnecessaryduplication in order that resourcesmay bebetterutilised.

ToexploreawayforwardworkingwithandalongsidetheresurgentFinchampsteadBaptistChurchandtheirnewPastorforacombinedvisionoftheChristiancommunity

inthearea.

endeavourstosupportbothlocalandoverseascharitiessuchasReadifoodandWaterAidand

charities where there are personal links such aswith Jackie Pullinger of the St Stephens

SocietyinHongKong,GrandsonsofAbrahaminKenyaandtheMityanaCharityinUganda.

Theyoungpeoplehaveorganisedprojectsthathaveincludedmakingandsellinglemonade

with the proceedsused toprovidegoats forAfrica andmaking theatregownsfor theBlue

PeterOperationSmileAppeal.

InadditioneachyearwesupportChristianAidthroughhouse-to-housecollections,astreet

collection and an annual Quiz Aid social event and the Childrens Society through our

Christingleservice.

AtStJamesthePCChasdecidedforthelasttwoyearstoconcentratethemajorityofits10%

giving (see section 6 above) on four main charities (Bible Society, Church Urban Fund,

ChurchesInReadingDropInCentreandourlinkDioceseofKimberley&KurumaninSouth

Africa.)andtoencouragechurchinvolvementbypublicityandbyinvitingspeakersfromthe

organisationsinvolved.ForfouryearsStJameshasbeentwinnedwithStMatthewsChurch

inKimberleyandhasformedaspeciallinkwiththePre-schoolthatoperatesinitsgrounds.Atpresentthechurchsponsorsfivechildrenwhowouldnototherwisebeabletoaffordthis

education. The headteacherkeepsthe church uptodateonthe progressof the children.

Some of the money set aside for St Matthews, together with extra donations from the

congregation,isheldinarestrictedfundreadytosupportthelinkasitdevelopsinfuture.It

ishopedthattwoofourcongregationwillvisitKimberleyin2011tostrengthenthelink.

Inaddition,thecongregationatStJamessupportsanumberofChristiancharitiesduringthe

yearbyregularspecialappealsasfollows:ChristianAidduringChristianAidweek,aswellas

assistingStMary&StJohnwiththehousetohousecollection,andwithOnecardonthetree

duringAdvent; Royal British Legion atRemembrance time;FarmAfrica orSend a Cow atHarvest,pluscollectingproducetotaketothelocalReadingDropInCentreandWomensAid

Centre; Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Appeal jointly with the Church School in

November; collecting new toys for PACT (Oxford Dioceses Parents & Children Together

charity) in earlyDecember; Childrens Society at Christmas, particularly at the Christingle

service.

Theethosofcharitablegivingisencouragedfromanearlyage.TheSundayClubsponsorsand

keepsincontactwithachildinIndia;theFledgelingsandtheYouthGroupbothregularlygive

awaysomeoftheirsubscriptionstocharities.TherecentYouthPantoraisedmoneyforGreat

was gift-aided donations and the related tax recovered and 27,435 was income from

investments.TheUnrestrictedExpenditurefor2009was163,251;ofwhichthe2009Parish

Share,whichwaspaidinfull,was77,608.

StMary&StJohns'accountsfor2009showUnrestrictedFundsincomeof59,668,ofwhich

40,347wasgift-aideddonationsandtherelatedtaxrecovered.Thetotalexpenditurewas

58,973;theDiocesanParishShare,whichwaspaidinfull,was42,361.
