A Just Harvest Ministry is Calling Your Name

Have you ever been introduced to fellow parishioners after church on Sunday and then forgot-ten their names by the time you see them the following week? It’s something that can happen to almost all of us.

This fall we will start up new Foyer Groups which are a great way to know each other better in a relaxed setting. Foyer Groups are a fun and easy way for parishioners to get together on a regular but informal basis for purely social reasons: to enjoy each other’s company, to strengthen bonds of community, to meet new members, and to discover just how interesting the lives of all of us truly are. Small groups of 8 to 12 people will meet once every four to six weeks between September 9, 2012 and August 2013, in the home of one of the members of the group. There is no agenda or plan – just casual fellowship and a refreshing meal. For a Q & A sheet and other details, please click on the link. You can sign up on the next two Sundays after the 9:30 and 11:30 am services, or by emailing Lucia Webster at [email protected]. This is a wonderful opportunity to make new friends; reinforce ties with old friends; and to learn about the remarkable people you see on Sundays at church. Do give it a try!

If you have not experienced one of our summer “beach services”, you are in for a real treat. Let us start by explaining that it’s not exactly on the beach, but in a lovely park overlooking the beach. Starting Sunday, June 24 and running through September 2, the service starts at 9:30 am at the Maple Street Park on Sheridan Road in Winnetka. It is just south of the Church On The Hill. Here is a Beach Service Primer that will ensure a great experience:

1) It’s B.Y.O.B. or C.. You should bring your own blanket or chair. 2) Always a good idea to bring bug spray. 3) The shade can be chilly. (We do live near Chicago. You know...colder by the lake.) Bring a sweater or sweatshirt. 4) The dress code is no code. Shorts and a t-shirt are most appropriate. 5) Mrs. Clemmitt & Mrs. Missy provide songs, Bible stories, and art for children.

If you attend when a baptism is planned (June 24 and August 26), you have hit the jackpot. At the appropriate time in the service we gather at the shore of Lake Michigan for the Thanksgiving Over The Water and the clergy carry the candidate into the water. Very exciting. Hope you can join us.

How To “Do” A Beach Service Or Summer Service 101

High School is usually a time for academics, sports, boyfriends, and even a fi rst job. Rarely do you think of it as a time of sharing your spirituality. Yet, several high school students do that at Christ Church every Sunday. Our church school leaders include three high school seniors: Kinsley Bushon-ville, Betsy Kuhns, and Liza Peterson and one high school junior: Jessie Webster, and a high school freshman: Ellie Kerpan. They are all remarkable. As our seniors graduate and go off to greener pastures, let’s take a moment to refl ect on their ministries with the children.

Kinsley Bushonville has been sharing her faith in the True Vine Atrium for four years. She even taught herself calligraphy in order to teach the children how to use calligraphy to write out the scriptures. The children have also been blessed with her costuming skills for the Christmas Pageant.

Betsy Kuhns brings a great big smile and her helping hands into the three year old class each week. She also lends a helping hand with the Christmas Pageant each year.

Liza Peterson not only teaches on Sundays, but has directed the Christmas Pageant with JimMcGee for four years. Her heart will always be with our Peaceable Kingdom.

Thank you to our high school student leaders, and all of our church school leaders, for a great year. Contact Missy Harrison at [email protected], if you would like to be part of our Children’s Ministry team. Adults are also welcome to volunteer!

This is a fascinating book about understanding and reclaiming ancient Christian language, in order to enrich and transform our lives. We meet on Monday mornings from 10-11 in the McClain room at the Church on the Hill. Anyone is welcome to join us, even if you have not read the book. Any questions, please contact Melissa Durbin ([email protected].)

Another successful program year of Confi rmation is in the books for Christ Church – literally in the big Parish Confi rmation Register and in each Book of Common Prayer candidates for Confi rmation and Reception received as gifts from the church. Bishop Jeffrey Lee signed each one of those books and he has laid hands on each of the candidates – one at the Easter Vigil held at the Cathedral Church of St. James in Chicago and 19

others on Saturday, April 28 at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church in Wil-mette. This year’s Confi rmation Teachers were Elizabeth Clemmitt and Jim Harrison.

Received into the Episcopal Church: Anne Driscoll. This year’s recently Confi rmed: Tommy Brittingham, Alex Burck, A.J. Byrne, Liz Byrne, Jack By-rne, Owen Cahill, Jackie Coladarci, James Corrigan, Jack DeBlasio, Sammy Durbin, Emily George, Audrey Gordon, Brandon Hawley, Reilly Knoer, Erin Kunkler, Max MacRitchie, Calvin Montgomery, Tommy Priest, and Alex White.

This year our Eighth graders were required to submit an essay, “What Confi rmation Means to Me.” Here are some excerpts:

“Over the time I have spent getting ready to be confi rmed, I have experi-enced a lot of things. I think it has made me a better person, and helped me solve things I haven’t been able to solve before.”

“These two hour periods were like my escape from the outside world and outside problems.”

“It means going to church, A LOT.”

“It is a reaffi rmation of vows and covenant, a deeper spiritual life, and being a better Christian in the community.”

“A huge part of Confi rmation for me was the ability to get to know the rest of the people going through this process with me…it helped me form a bond with all of my fellow confi rmands.”

“I’m so excited to take the next step in my growth as a member of my church. My whole family is coming to my confi rmation, which means a lot to me. I’m very lucky to have such a great family and am glad to say that the Church is now part of it.”

“The preparation leading up to confi rmation is long, intense, but very rewarding, and it all pays off in the end.”

“Our meetings are a safe place to go to open up and talk about what it will mean to us to be confi rmed as adult Christians in the Church.”

“Confi rmation is an art, it teaches us how to easily connect with GOD and how to continue on in life, with God’s help.”

“What I have learned from doing confi rmation for these past few months is that when you get confi rmed it does not necessarily mean that you are done with your religious journey.”

On May 2, members of Christ Church gathered at Tower Road beach to participate in the 350.org international “Connect the Dots” campaign. The campaign’s goal is to create awareness of the link between climate change and extreme weather events around the world. The Reverend Jeanne Stewart, Associate Rector at Christ Church, stated, “The Christ Church event was designed to help parishioners imagine what daily life would be like for the more than three billion people who live on or near the coastline.” To do so, members of the Christ Church youth choir, led by Organist and Choirmaster Richard Clemmitt, sang hymns as the improvised church gradually sank into the water. The choristers’ hymnals displayed colorful dots to emphasize the theme of the 350.org campaign.

Organized by Christ Church green team member John Canfi eld, Jr., the event highlighted the way our emissions here in the Midwest affect those who live in coastal areas because global warming is causing the sea level to rise by accelerating the melting of polar ice caps and the thawing of glaciers. “Although Lake Michigan is not rising, what we do here can have a profound impact around the globe because the majority of the earth’s population lives near the coasts,” Canfi eld said.

Sea-level rise has already made some areas around the world uninhabitable. As early as 2008, the President of the Maldives began to pur-chase land in Australia to house residents forced to evacuate. “Areas like Bangladesh and Vietnam will be especially hard hit because a big part of their population lives in river deltas,” Canfi eld said. Flooding in mega-cities like Mumbai could displace millions. “Because we are charged to love our neighbors as ourselves, we have a responsibility to protect those most at risk,” green team member Amanda Hanley said.

“What we hoped to convey with this event is that climate change is not just a scientifi c issue, it’s a human rights issue, and we need to do our part to understand the implications of our actions on others, especially those already living in poverty,” said Canfi eld. “In other words,” he added, “our actions need to be consistent with our values.”

The Christ Church initiative is part of the diocese-wide promotion of environmental stewardship through the Bishop’s Task Force on Sustainabil-ity, chaired by Lisa Rogers Lee. The Episcopal Diocese of Chicago partners with Faith in Place, a statewide interfaith environmental organization whose mission is to help people of faith understand that ecological issues are at the forefront of social justice.
