Christ Church, in conjunction with Renewal in the Wilderness, is pleased to offer a Men’s Retreat! The retreat will be a three day canoe trip on the beautiful Wisconsin River from Friday, June 22 through Sunday, June 24, 2012. (No prior experience on the water is necessary.) Check out this link to the RITW website for more information: www.renewalinthewilderness.org. This opportunity for spiritual renewal will be led by Curate Jim Harrison and Renewal in the Wilderness founder, John Lionberger, and is designed to assist people in connecting with God in perhaps the most ancient of ways – in nature. Contemplation, companionship and conversation – all hallmarks of community relationships will be our navigational aids on our journey. The cost of the retreat is $450. There is scholarship assistance available.Contact Jim Harrison ([email protected] or 847-446-2850) for more information and to register for the retreat. (Space is limited.)

Renewal in the Wilderness: Men’s Retreat in June

In January the Benevolence Committee sent out applications to over 70 charitable agencies in the Chicagoland area to begin the process of allocating the proceeds of the annual rummage sale and related activi-ties. The completed applications arrive by February and then the Benevolence Committee must carefully review each application, meet with the Agency personnel and reach a deci-sion on whether, or how much, of Rummage proceeds should be granted to an applying agency. We are in need of 4 new members to our Committee. For anyone interested in learning more about area charitable organiza-tions, their missions, successes and challenges this is a terrifi c opportunity. The Committee meets at 6:30 pm every other Tuesday night in the Parish House and, under the prayerful guidance of Reverend Jeanne Stewart, performs a due diligence review of each agency applica-tion. Participation is very rewarding and the opportunity to better understand the breath and scope of area charities is without peer.

If you are interested, please contact Susan Garland ([email protected]) or Tom Kuhns ([email protected]) or call theParish Offi ce 847-446-2850.

New Vestry Members 2012

Vestry nominee Chris Cahill has been a member of the Rector Search Committee and feels that “this is an exciting time for the parish as we seek and welcome a new rector. I hope to contribute to the continued strong leadership and spiritual vitality of the church.” Chris was born in Norfolk, Nebraska and grew up just outside Boston n Newton, MA. He considers himself a Bostonian and is a dyed in the wool Red Sox fan. (It is a strong individual who admits this in print on the North Shore of Chicago.) Chris graduated from Middlebury College in Vermont where he majored in Political Science then went on to get an MBA from the Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth where he was a classmate of Katy and Dietrich Knoer. He is currently a Managing Partner at Pierian Analytics, a strategic marketing analytics consulting fi rm. Chris, his wife Jennifer Grow and their four children, Owen (13), Nora (12), Aidan (10), and Finola (6) live in Winnetka and have been members of Christ Church for four years. All four children sing in our Youth Choir. Chris serves as a Sunday School Leader for the 5th grade and is a Lector. He was also an outstanding King David in the 2010 hit performance of Glory Story. Chris Cahill

Vestry nominee Nancy Free who was born and raised in Grosse Pointe, Michigan has multiple Christ Churches in her blood. She grew up serving as an acolyte and was married to her husband Brian in Christ Church, Grosse Pointe. Nancy moved from St. Chrysostom’s in Chicago to Christ Church in 2002. She has two children: Annie (12) and Will (9) who was baptized in Lake Michigan by previous Curate Patti Snickenberger. Both Annie and Will are active in our Youth Choir. Nancy has a degree in Economics from Brown University and went on to work at Citicorp as a Vice President in corporate fi nance. Nancy is currently the Treasurer for the Winnetka Public Schools Foundation and is an avid swimmer and tennis player. Nancy is “looking forward to the oppor-tunity to learn more about Christ Church and its outreach programs on the Vestry.” Nancy will fi ll a one-year unexpired term on the Vestry.

Nancy Free

Vestry Nominee Jim Henderson, a Northfi eld resident, has been an active member of Christ Church since birth. Jim and his two brothers were born in the Highland Park Hospital and grew up on Cherry Street in Winnetka where his mom still lives. Jim just celebrated his 50th year of service as an acolyte. He started at age 10 serving under former rector Rev. Lea (you do the math.) Jim has a degree from Duke University in Political Science and has an MBA from Kellogg. His son James is a fi rst year medical student at Case Western and his daughter Mary Lee is a senior at the University of Illinois. Jim is an investment manager with his own fi rm, Mast Investment Advisors. On a Sunday (after acolyting) you are likely to fi nd Jim on a boat somewhere in Lake Michigan as he has been an avid sailor his entire life. Jim is looking forward to joining the Vestry as “Christ instructs us to pursue our faith in com-munity and worship. Paul was His greatest organizer. In that exemplary spirit, many hands make light work and I appreciate the opportunity to add both hands for this modest contribution to faith and worship excellence at our Christ Church.”

Jim Henderson

In 1992 Kevin Walsh was living in Boston and came to Christ Church to marry his wife, Tika, one week before our recently retired Rector, Ned Prevost, and our current Organist and Choirmaster, Richard Clemmit, started working here. All three of his boys Tanner (15), Reilly (12) and Cameron (11) were baptized at Christ Church and when the family moved back to Chicago in 1997 they began attending services. Kevin and his two sisters were born and raised in CT. He was a Political Science major (anyone notice a pattern here?) at the College of Wooster in Ohio and has an MBA from Kellogg. He currently runs a business unit called Paslode Remodeling. They develop, manufacture and sell Paslode nail guns and nails for residential remodeling. Paslode is part of ITW, a Fortune 500 company based in Glenview. He has been a Wilmette resident for over 13 years and his weekends are taken over by a love of cooking, running and three boys who participate in travel soccer. Kevin is looking forward to “contributing more to the church and learning more about how it operates.”

On Sunday morning February 19 our choir will be singing at Trinity Church, Copley Square, in Boston. Despite our choir’s absence we will have wonderful music at both our 9:30 and 11:30 services. Guest organist, Royce Eckhardt, will be with us not only to lead hymn singing but also to play duets together with his professional violinist son, John. Royce is the former Music Director of Winnetka Presbyterian Church and is a frequent substitute organist at Christ Church during the summers. He also composed an anthem that our choir sang this past Christmas Eve.

Youth Choir Travels to Boston

The Rev. Kenneth Erickson has been working at Christ Church two days a week since the beginning of September 2011 as an Interim Associate. He has co-taught the Thurs-day morning Faith Explorers class and ably assisted Jeanne, Jim and Heath with our Sunday worship and preaching and with several PS offerings. A few days after his start he jumped right into Rummage working a full day on Flyover and on Sale Day. “I started out in the Hardware department and then roamed other depart-ments and helped where it was needed. It was amazing to see Rummage in progress.” Ken’s last Sunday with us will be February 26. “I am thankful for the opportunity to serve here at Christ Church where the sense of community is a breath of fresh air. The staff is a collabora-tive, high-caliber group that is excited about its ministry and the ministry of Christ Church.” Ken is currently in his own search process to become the rector at a parish of his own. We wish him Godspeed and remember…never buy green bananas.

Our Interim’s Interim is Overon February 26.

In September of 2010 our Christ Church family embarked on an ambitious journey together: “Glory Story”, reading the entire Bible in a year. All Sunday Forums (currently called PS) were focused on particular books of the bible. Three Monday to Friday study groups were formed to allow deeper discussions about the weekly homework and to allow parishioners to further explore their faith. A year and a half later those three groups are alive and well. Beginning in September of 2011 the parish, and these Faith Exploration groups, have been focusing on the New Testament.

On Tuesday evenings a very diverse group of 10 to 14 people meet from 7:30-9 in parishio-ners’ homes. Everyone is very prompt because “we can’t wait to get started with this mental exercise.” With Heath Missner as the facilitator the evening starts off with a prayer, followed by a reading of the week’s scripture passage, followed by a jumping off question (i.e. “How does God speak to human beings?” or “Who would God judge today and why?”), followed by thought provoking, diverse and respectful conversation. “As I see it…” “That’s a good question…” “For you it’s more straight ahead and that’s fi ne. For others not all paths are straight and that’s fi ne too.” “I have found this in my life…” The power of sharing experiences becomes quickly evident. One participant said “This group helps me to be a better person. This group has kind of an honor code. We are honest and sincere in our pursuit to know more about our faith.”

On Tuesday mornings another group meets from 9-10:30 at Café Aroma in Winnetka with Jim Harrison acting as its facilitator. This smaller group of around fi ve parishioners has dubbed themselves “Holy Caffeine.” Even though the same scripture passage is addressed, the conver-sation can go in very different directions from the evening gathering.

On Thursday mornings a group meets from 9-10:30 in the Parish Library with Shay Robert-son and/or Ken Erickson as the facilitator. This group has a bit more history as it was started several years ago as the Kerygma Bible Study meeting.

While I was only able to visit the Tuesday evening group for this article word on the street is that the other two offerings are equally engaging. My favorite exchange: Q: “Can you be more specifi c?” A: “No, I actually like being vague.” I encourage you to try one on for size. Bible Study: stimulating, thoughtful, respectful. Jump right in. All three groups welcome new mem-bers at any time. - Charlotte McGee

The Good News: There is Power in Sharing

THANK YOU for your support of Heifer for the Holidays! Together, we raised $5285 for Heifer’s mission to end hunger and poverty around the globe. With gifts of livestock and training, Heifer helps families improve their lives in sustainable ways that are friendly to the Earth. These gifts are really “living loans,” because in exchange for livestock and training, families agree to give one of their animal’s offspring to another family in need. That’s called Passing on the Gift -- a cornerstone of Heifer’s mission that creates an ever-expanding network of hope and peace. Thank you for helping to change the world, one gift at a time.

Heifer, Hope and Peace

Our Director of Children’s Ministries, Missy Harrison, has been honored with a 2011 Alliance for Early Childhood Teacher Tribute. In the ninth year of the program the Alliance pays tribute to “these extraordinary individuals and thanks them for the exceptional education and care that they have provided to the youngest members of our community.” Many thanks, Missy, for your passion, creativity and grace that you offer our children.
