The Spiritual Bereavement Circle is an opportunity to explore loss through our faith. How does the loss of a loved one touch our faith? How do we understand through our faith the emotions surrounding loss? How might we lose touch with our faith, or grow in our faith, through our loss? What role does a community of faith play in our healing? Please join us on Monday evenings to share in this exploration. We meet bi-weekly. We are currently using Elisabeth Kubler-Ross’s On Grief and Grieving as a starting point for discussion. Please feel free to join in at any time, regardless of whether or not you have done the reading! Please call Jeanne (847-446-2850) or Deacon Heath (847-853-9263) with any questions. The group meets at the home of Sherry Gormanous, 632 Melrose Avenue in Kenilworth. Rides to and from Sherry’s are available. In February we will meet on the 11th and the 25th.

Dear Christ Church:

The physicists say there is a force we all must reckon with.

They say it holds planets in their orbit, turns stones to burning churning masses of orange goo. This force is said to pull the water out of the clouds, and drive it to the roots of the fl owers that need it or to hold my head to the pillow when I fi nally lay down to sleep. Without it the oceans wouldn’t caress the sands so lovingly, the hands of the pianist wouldn’t bother to strike the keys in hopes the hammers will fall on their strings. I have been taught that without it we wouldn’t be able to hold our babies or dance with our children.

Of course, I am new to Christ Church but I am not new to the forces that hold community together. I have seen you connected to this place and this worship space. Your stories bring a smile to my face because the characters are new but the themes are old and familiar. Your children greet me with the kind of smiles only innocents will show the welcome stranger. My curiosity is piqued when I see you rummage through a pile of one man’s trash and turn up a treasure. The reluctant youth mingle with their bustling baby brothers and sisters and I rejoice over your large families and the hopes you have invested in their bright futures.

Nathan and I ask each other, what is it about this place? What is their reason for such kind-ness? Why are they surprising and comforting to us at the same time? What is holding them together and pulling us toward them?

The physicists say your molecules are simply destined to collide with mine eventually and they are right but perhaps the very thing they call gravity is what I have learned to call Love, put in place by a Creator who knows that without it I fl oat away from all that would capture my heart.

These so-called Children’s Ministries are not just for folks who have yet to reach a certain age. My job, in fact, my calling, is to serve the unborn, the child-like, the maternal impulse in each little girl and the paternal aspects of each big brother whether he is nine or 90 years old. We were all children once and hopefully we haven’t let go of fond childhood feelings and memo-ries. I hold on to mine while I can, turn them over in my mind and wonder what they can teach me, what they can teach the children in our midst.

Our connections to our past are also our connections to the present: each other, and to the future: our children. This force that pulls the tears from our eyes as readily as it pulls raindrops from clouds is the force that we all must reckon with. How lovely it has been these last two months to share its glories and quandaries with you!

To many more, Abigail

A Refl ection on “The First 60 Days” by Abigail Vizcarra Perez, Director of Children’s Ministries

Received from A Just Harvest:

“Thank you, Christ Church Winnetka, for your faithful service at A Just Harvest’s Community Kitchen in 2012! We are so grateful for your donation of time and food on the second Tues-day and fourth Saturday of every month.

Many hands make light work, and Christ Church Winnetka’s contribution - along with 35 other partners – made it possible for us to serve 54,339 meals in our dining room in 2012. This is an increase of 1.3% over 2011.

Although the number of meals we served in our dining room reached a plateau in 2012 following three consecutive years of increases, it seems people’s need for emergency food has not leveled off. The amount of bread, pro-duce and non-perishable food A Just Harvest distributed to people in need rose sharply in 2012. We received so many calls from people seeking emergency food that David Crawford, our Director of Food Services, began encourag-ing people to pick up food Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday nights - even if they weren’t staying for dinner.

In 2012 A Just Harvest distributed 128,863 pounds of food during the dinner hour – up 134% from 2011. A Just Harvest also passed on 66,900 pounds of food - up 150% from 2011 - to other organizations in Rogers Park and Edgewater. Much of this food was donated by the Hunger Resource Network, the Jewel in Edgewater and the Whole Foods in south Evan-ston. A Just Harvest also distributed 100,250 pounds of food via the ProduceMobile.”

We’d like to share the following letter from A Just Harvest and to personally thank all of our wonderful Christ Church volunteers who have dedicated their time, energy, resources and unending compassion toward a very needy Chicago population. Find out how YOU can make a difference by signing up to help. Go to the Outreach page of our web site: www.christchurchwinnetka.org.

Our Second Annual St. James’ Jackson/Christ Church Winnetka Bike Trip is starting to form. The trip runs from Saturday, June 30-Saturday, July 6. We ride Sunday through Friday. We will cycle about 70 miles a day through the beautiful scenery and mountains of Vermont and surrounding states. Ages 21 and over (with a little wiggle room for college-age kids). We sleep in Episcopal churches along the way. This is my 20th year leading a trip like this. An excel-lent way to get in shape by training for this event. Cost is $875 inclusive of everything except travel to and from Albany, NY, where we start and fi nish. Last year, we had eighteen riders and we had more fun than anyone could describe. Reply to Christopher at [email protected] for more information or to register.
