THE GIFT OF GOD’S WORD On this day of gifts and gift-giving, it seems appropriate that we take a moment to reflect on the great gift of God’s Word. “Being joyful in Christ our Savior”

It is Christmas! Our Gospel reading on this festive holy day is the opening words of the Gospel of John. St. John says, “The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came to be through him.” That is why we celebrate today. Pope Francis opened his sermon on Christmas day last year by saying this: “Christmas is joy, religious joy, an inner joy of light and peace.” At Mass on Christmas Eve we hear, “I proclaim to you good news of great joy; today a Savior is born for us, Christ the Lord.” It is this joy we need to feel, this joy we need to carry to others. Many have expressed the joy of today. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI said this about Christ-mas: “Joy is the true gift of Christmas. We can communi-cate this joy simply: with a smile, a kind gesture, a little help, forgiveness. And the joy we give will certainly come back to us… Let us pray that this presence of the liberating joy of God shines forth in our lives.” The angel Gabriel greeted our Blessed Mother Mary with the Greek word Kaire! That means “Be joyful.” God is near us today; He is so near that He became a child. Let us take that joy and share it with others; let us take that joy and change our lives and the lives of others. When we say “Merry Christmas” let us mean it with every fabric of our being. St. Joseph the Worker is a beacon of light where God’s people can find beautiful prayer, reconciliation and healing. Help us to continue spread the mercy, love and the Joy of Jesus by making an extra special Christmas offering today in celebration of the birth of our Savior. Thank you and may God bless you for being a joyful giver. Merry Christmas, Fr. Kenneth Nobrega

Feliz navidad P. Kenneth Nobrega

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

An old joke asks, “What time is Midnight Mass?” The answer is not really obvious, since Christmas is unique in having several distinct celebrations. The readings and prayers vary greatly from hour to hour. The Vigil Mass hinges on the family heritage of Jesus and his origins. The concept of “midnight” predates clock time, and really has to do with a celebration in the hours of darkness. Years ago, it was not possible to receive Communion without fasting for a full day, so the late hour of this Mass made it possible for the peo-ple to receive. The first Mass after sunrise, the Mass at Dawn, was once known as “The Shepherds’ Mass,” and later Masses set aside stories of Jesus’ birth to fo-cus on the key to the day’s celebration: John the Evan-gelist’s majestic theology of Christ’s identity as the Word made flesh, dwelling among us. One feast, four separate Masses. Only monasteries manage the whole round. Parishioners typically take just one entry point into the mystery. Yet there is much to savor and cele-brate in the coming of Christ into the world. Christmas is not a day, but a season.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copy-
