Dear Parishioners, One thing the corona virus has done is drag me into the 21st century. When the government limited the size of public gatherings, it became clear we were going to have to find a different way to spiritually minister to the people of our parish. Defying the order was not really an option since it could put human life at risk. A better solution was to use modern technology to communicate and get the word out. For example, we could tape the Mass and broadcast it to our parishioners. This really isn’t a new idea. Mother Angelica has been doing it for years. What was new was the fact we were going to broadcast the Mass from Blessed Sacrament to the parishioners of Blessed Sacrament. What equipment would it take? What programs would we need? When I first talked to Aaron House, our IT director, we talked about “live streaming” Mass. (I really didn’t know what “live-streaming” meant.) There were also other terms that were unfamiliar to me. You see, I graduated from college before PC’s came out. When it came to filming, real films were spelled R-E-E-L. We showed them on a movie screen with a Bell and Howell projector. After studying the issue, Aaron came back to say we could not live stream yet because we couldn’t get the additional equipment in time. We decided instead to tape the Saturday evening Mass and then broadcast it over the internet on Sunday morning at the regular Mass times. Even this would take time and planning. On Saturday afternoon, I met with Aaron; Ethan Short, a parishioner and student at SHG; Jane Hartman-Irwin, our music director, and Bob Vincent, who would serve as my lector/server. Filming the Mass took about 50 minutes, but Aaron and Ethan spent several more hours editing the film to make it as sharp as possible. I saw the film for the first time on Sunday morning at 7 am. It looked great. We owe a great debt of gratitude to these four people who put in a lot of time and effort to make this possible. We also thank Lisa Sarnowski, our website coordinator who put in a great deal of time and effort to get the word out. We ended up with 1,095 hits. In going forward from here, there could be many uses for this technology. We used it for RCIA last Thursday. The school asked if I could send out a weekly message to the students. Meditations, Stations of the Cross, PSR, and on and on. I’m afraid we might have created a monster. Oh well, we are living in the 21st century. One last comment, this past weekend not only did I celebrate my first virtual Mass, I also attended my first virtual family reunion. On Sunday, all my siblings and many nieces and nephews got together on ZOOM to visit and catch up on what was going on in the family. There were even pictures of the “new additions” to the family. The corona virus has forced me into the 21st century. It’s not all bad. And I’m not too old to learn something new…like facebook and zoom. I just hope they don’t go viral. Fr. Jeff

SCHOOL NEWS! SCHOOL CLOSED Here is what Blessed Sacrament is doing to allow you to practice your faith as fully as possible during this crisis.

First of all, there will be no public masses until further notice. Everyone has a dispensation from the weekly obligation to attend Mass. There will be no daily Masses for the public starting immediately. Beginning this weekend, Mass at Blessed Sacrament can be viewed online - there will be a link here on the website. We will tape the Saturday evening Mass "Sine Populo" (without people) and it will be available on Sunday morning. You can make a spiritual communion. You can also call the parish for all other spiritual and sacramental needs.

The parish is not closed - questions can be directed to the parish office at 217-528-7521. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM.

Adoration Chapel will remain open and you are encouraged to come and pray. The public hours will remain 5 AM to 10 PM. Please remember that the Chapel is for private prayer. We ask that you not pray out loud or in a way that distracts another person trying to pray privately.

· Holy water is available in the dispenser in the chapel. Please bring your own container to take it home. If you are taking large amounts, please see one of the priests to have them bless your water. · Parish Penance Services have been cancelled, but we will be offering confessions in the confessional off the chapel, every day, Monday through Friday, from noon to 1 PM. This is in addition to confessions on Saturdays at 3 PM. Confessionals are being sanitized daily.

· Visit the parish website at www.bsps.org. This is the best way to know what is going on in the parish.

· The parish depends on your stewardship and generosity in order to bring sacraments and spiritual services to you. With everything severely curtailed, our finances have suffered. Please remember to mail in your contribution or donate online through the secure link below. This will help us meet our obligations. Call the parish office to sign up for ACH (automatic contributions). Many parishioners are also suffering financially from this crisis.

· A donation to H.O.P.E. (Helping Our People in Emergencies), formerly known as St. Vincent de Paul, will let our parish reach out to them

Fish Fries: All Fish Fries have been CANCELLED.
