How often do we pray? Jesus spoke on many subjects during His ministrybut He talked a lot about much. Not only did He talk about prayer, Healso prayed a lot. Prayer was a priority as it meant that He was talkingto His Father. Where does prayer fit into our lives?

There were two young brothers, John and James, they always lovedstaying overnight with their grandparents, as children often do. They hada fantastic day with grandma and grandad and just before bedtime thetwo of them sat together on their bed to say their prayers. Ten year oldJohn prayed, “Lord God please look after mum and dad and keep us allsafe tonight. Amen.” Short and to the point. Then seven year old James bellowed at thetop of his voice, “Dear God, please let meget a Bart Simpson T-shirt for my birthday.”“You don’t have to shout,” said John. “Godisn’t deaf.” “I know,” whispered James,“But grandad is.” Prayer is the easiest andat the same time the most difficult activity human beings can everengage in, and, as that amusing little story illustrates, it is so easilyabused if we don’t get it clear in our minds just what it is we are doingand who it is we are supposed to be praying to.

The Christian writer, Dallas Willard, describes prayer in this straightforward way; prayer he says is ‘Talking to God about what we are doingtogether’. We ask for things that both we and God are interested in, andsince He is interested in everything, the scope regarding what we pray isvery broad indeed.

So often we pray for our needs and burdens but how much time do wereally spend praying for others and giving thanks to God?

On 13th March it was our pleasure towelcome over 250 boys and girls ofall ages from all over the province tothe Church Lads' and Church Girls'Brigade Annual  Service at St Pat-rick's. The service was  led by RevIain and Very Rev Dean  RobertTownley. There  was lusty singingand a drama was performed by theboys under the guidance of the CLB'stwo development workers, Matthewand Victoria. Iain was presentedwith  a certificate to recognize hisappointment as Chaplain to the CLB.There were two parades and indus-trial quantities of hot  dogs (pro-duced as ever by the catering teamunder the care of Liz Hughes) wereperformed in the halls afterwards.

If any parents are interested insending their sons or daughters tothe Church Lads’/Church Girls’ Bri-gade, perhaps they could speak toAlan or Iain.

CATERING

The time has come when I feel una-ble to continue in my present role ascatering coordinator in the parishand I intend to retire from this posi-tion at the end of June this year.  Iwill, however, be happy to continueto some extent by helping at eventsand supplying tray bakes etc whennecessary.

There must be some younger ener-getic person/s with fresh ideas inthe parish who could take over. Alist of very competent, helpful andfriendly people prepared to help isalready in place and Iam quite sure they will continue todo so.

The Catering Committee raised£4,500 towards church funds during2015 so anyone willing to fulfil therole  would indeed be doing a veryvaluable and worthwhile job. Please give some serious considera-tion to this and let one of the clergyknow if you are interested.  I canalso be contacted for further infor-mation as to what is involved. There is not a great deal to let you all know about this month. The tenderdocuments for the work on the rectory have been drawn up and four localbuilders have been invited to submit their tenders. They have until theend of March to do so, and at the time of writing we are waiting for theirresponses. The McConnell family have seen the rectory and it is good thatwe can get their views and input as to how they would envisage usingcertain rooms and what they would like to see in their family home.Since we hope that they will be able to move to Ballymena in May and wenow know that Mark will be installed as rector on 1st June we will haveto look for another house to rent for them to live in while the work isbeing carried out to the rectory itself, since on our most optimistictime-table the work there might well take until the end of the summerto complete.

In the meanwhile spring is arriving once again and everything is startingto grow, so if anyone can spare some time and effort to help keep theRectory grounds in order such help would be very gratefully received. Onthe same score another few hands to help out at Ballyclug would also bewelcomed.

Looking beyond the renovations to the rectory our next problem wouldappear to be further damp in St Patrick’s, that can be seen on the wallsin several places at the top of the nave and in the cloister and choirrobing room. At the moment these problems are still under investigationand no detailed plan of action has been produced to remedy them. To anextent we will have to wait and see what our available finances will beonce the rectory project has been completed.

One thing which has had to be changed, for the time being at least, isthat the church in Castle Street will no longer be left open as a matter ofcourse during the day, except for an hour or so around one o’clock toallow the prayer time to continue. Sadly there have been one or two

unwelcome incidents lately which led the Select Vestry to think it wiserto keep the doors closed when the church is unattended, sad though thatis.

The next issue of the magazine will be available after the Easter GeneralVestry is held. I hope to see as many of you as possible at that meetingon the 5th April. It is important that you all get the chance to make yourdecision on the Select Vestry persons for next year, so I hope you addedyour name to the General Vestry list if it wasn’t already on it. Bear inmind this time round that those people will support our new rector as hesettles in and make that process as smooth as we can for him, though Ihope we’ll all be doing that whether we’re on the Select Vestry or not.

Happy Easter to all.Alastair

The Youth Club has been busy making lots of nice things for Mother's Day.We talked about how our mothers care for us and how we should tell themwe love them. As well as telling them we love them we should show themwe love them for example by doing things to help them.

We would love to hear from anyone willing to give up an hour or two ona Saturday night to help at Youth Club.

On Saturday 12th March Connor Diocese held a youth prayer event in ourparish. The theme was prayer spaces in schools. Emma from 24/7 Prayerled the talk and then the young people had the opportunity to use prayerspaces for some creative prayers. We also had games, worship led byKate and the band from Muckamore and ice cream sundaes and pizzas. It was great to see so many young people from across the Diocese comingtogether for fellowship.

After Easter the Sunday School will be starting the CMS Project ‘TheMeeting Place’ based in Uganda.

Here is a letter from the CMS magazine on meeting places and globalpartners within CMS:-

Meeting places are important for our Global Partners, whether in theform of churches, cathedrals, clinics or colleges, or even in everydayencounters at the market or on the street. These places, these encoun-ters, provide opportunities for love to be shared, for hope to be discov-ered, for help to be found, for new life to break through.

In Ireland, spring is a time for celebrating signs of new life and toembrace the transition from dark to light. It’s a season of hope, renewaland promise. That’s why Easter is so well suited to this time of year:darkness to light; death to life; despair to hope; old to new.

Sometimes, new life appears in the most unexpected places. Even in thedriest, most remote and barren settings, you can find the beginnings ofsomething new, something beautiful. That’s certainly the story of thecross - that most significant of all meeting places, where true transfor-mation and renewal emerge from abject pain, defeat and death. It’salso the experience of so many of our Global Partners, as they help tobring about new life in hard places.

On returning from her recent visit to South Sudan, Jenny Smyth spoke ofhaving been struck afresh of the witness and work of the Church in placesof conflict and suffering.

“I stand astounded at the effect that ordinary local churches can haveand are having; people living faithfully to Kingdom values, clinging on tothe hope that we have in Christ and holding out the word of life to thosearound.

We are the weaker if we do not stand with them ‘In the gaps’ throughprayer and giving. We have the privilege of witnessing God interveningin the dark, hard places of His beloved world, and of being re-inspiredto be His hands and feet in our own communities too.”

5TH BALLYMENA (ST COLUMBA’S) SCOUTS

On Saturday 6th February 2016, Cubs, Scoutsand Leaders from 5th Ballymena were invitedto have a look around the Fire Department andbehind the scenes at Belfast International Air-port, as a continuation of the Cubs 100 celebra-tions. There were 26 people altogether; 11Cubs, 8 Scouts (all formerly Cubs) and 7 leaders. Everyone had awonderful time and thoroughly enjoyed it. The visit also helped the Cubsout with earning their air activities badge.

When we arrived at security, a car from the Fire Department escorted usto the station. Upon arrival, everyone piled out of the mini bus and thefiremen gave us a quick briefing on some rules and regulations. We weresplit into groups and each group went on a tour of the station. To end thetour, we saw the massive fire engines and each person got to go on a drivein them. One Cub commented on how they looked different from thenormal ones we see on a daily basis and how they looked almost futuristic.

After we had finished at the fire station, we got on the bus and wentacross to the airport where we were met by some staff and went to aboardroom where they tested us on some statistics about the airport. After winning some prizes, Burger King very kindly supplied food foreveryone which was very much appreciated and thoroughly enjoyed. After scrumptious food, there were some special Cubs cupcakes foreveryone, supplied by one of the staff. They were delicious and everyoneappreciated them.

After full stomachs and happy kids, we were taken to the old ControlTower overlooking the terminal in the airport. There we got an amazingview of the runway and planes. Some more quick quizzes and then we

were off back downstairs where we were delighted and surprised to getto see a police car and van that they use there. All the kids (and big kids)were going crazy. The policemen did a kind of ‘roleplay’ where theycuffed a few of the kids and put them in the back of the van and lockedthem in like proper suspects. After some fun with that it was time for usto go home. With a fun filled day over and behind us, everyone was alittle bit tired on the way back home on the bus. However, the kids stillmanaged to find a way to get on the leaders’ nerves.

We would like to say a big thank you to all the staff involved with the day, from the firemen, to the airport staff. They couldn’t have been any niceror more accommodating. Cubs, Scouts and leaders all enjoyed the dayand we couldn’t have asked for a better time, even the rainy day couldn’tdampen our spirits.

Christian Aid Week 2016More collectors urgently sought!

Christian Aid Week this year runs from 15th to 21st May. This year theweek is slightly later in May than it has been but many of us will still enjoygetting together for the two special lunches, one in St Patrick’s and onein St Columba’s. Many parishioners will also support Christian Aid bygiving generously in the envelopes in church. The money we give is vitalto the work of Christian Aid as it seeks to eliminate poverty by assistingindividuals in many parts of the world to develop small enterprises whichhelp them to feed and educate their own families and to develop theircommunities. It will also enable Christian Aid to respond to the initialproblems following natural disasters - and then to give follow-up assist-ance as well.

The money we have given through the lunches and envelopes over theyears has been substantial but we, as a parish, have also been involvedwith door-to-door collections. We, like the other churches in the town, are allotted a particular area in which to collect. This collection is veryimportant because it not only enables non-church-goers to contribute aconsiderable sum to Christian Aid’s work but also shows our commitmentand witness to a wider public.

Collecting for Christian Aid is a whole parish effort and the collectorsenjoy working together in small groups and getting to know each otherbetter as they go. Inevitably, over the years, some of the stalwarts of thegroup have had to drop out and some others have come along to taketheir place. However, we need to recruit some more collectors to relievethe burden on some of the existing helpers who have been taking on moreand more to ensure that we continue to cover the area allotted to us.

Lady held chained in tin hut for 10 years …..Can YOU help?

Lady who was chained up and lived in a narrow tinned hut for 10 years.Rescued. Twenty three year old pregnant lady having lived rough for overtwo years. Rescued. Young 11 year old girl living alone in the streets.Rescued. Why were they rejected in their community? Why did theyneed help? Because they all had mental health problems.

In Nepal the majority of people having mental health problems gountreated, uncared for and often unnoticed. Last year the team whowent out to Nepal worked in the KOSHISH’S House of Hope where suchladies can live in a secure environment with proper care and medical help.

The House of Hope is where women and girls abandoned in the streetsdue to physical and/or mental health problems can get proper treatmentwith both medication and psychological support. The Koshish charityembrace them and help restore their dignity through giving them propermedical help and skills to assist them rehabilitate into society. Wherepossible they will be able to return to their own family or community.

It is intended that a church group will again go to Nepal and help in thisgreat work. More urgently we have had a request to help with the settingup of a second house, this time for men. The work on this has alreadystarted but funds are needed and we intend to send a donation beforethe end of the summer.

Can you help?
