My dear friends at St. Elizabeth’s, If your household was like mine, as Christmas Day approached, the pace of life be-came crazy in anticipation. We cleaned, baked, wrote cards, sent e-mails, found last minute gifts online or at the mall, and we wrapped presents. The days leading up to Christmas were such an exciting time of the year, as we looked forward to seeing family and friends, and of course, opening all the presents under the tree! However, I find that once Christmas Day has come and gone, there is a temptation to return back to old routines and habits. The presents and gifts are put away, the ornaments are packed up and put in the attic or basement for next year, and the tree is taken down. It seems like in the week after Christmas the street where I live is lined with trees left on the curbside for disposal. I must admit that sometimes the days immediately after Christmas can feel like a burst balloon. The build-up of excitement to Christmas Day is fol-lowed by a “sugar” crash. However, it need not be! Christmas is more than one day. Rather it is a season of joy and celebration including the feast of the Holy Family this week, followed by the Epiphany of the Lord next week, and concluding with the Baptism of our Lord by John the Baptist on Sunday, January 13. This year I am determined to keep the Christmas tree up and the lights on until the very end of the Christmas season. I am hopeful my neighbors will do the same as an ongoing reminder to all those who journey on our street that there is a “reason for the season.” I admit I have been guilty of missing the significance of celebrating the entire Christmas season. All this changed one bitter cold Christmas Eve as I arrived late as usual for the family party. As I sat in the car collect-ing my thoughts before joining the party, I noticed the beautiful night sky and the bright stars through the win-dows. The car radio was playing Christmas music. On came the song Silent Night. I thought about that cold night 2,000 years ago in Bethlehem and of a young mother, Mary, who gave birth in a stable to a child. A sense of peace and calm came over me. God had entered human history not just to be with us, but he became one of us and lived among us. Immanuel meaning, “God is with us,” remains with us until the end of time. This is what the Christmas season celebrates! I think the great theologian Karl Rahner captured the reason we celebrate the season of Christmas beautifully and poetically, when he wrote:

And now God says to us what he has already said to the world through his grace-filled birth: I am there. I am with you. I am your life… I have sheltered safely in the cold stable of your world. I no long-er go away from this world, even if you do not see me now… I am there. It is Christmas. Light the can-dles…. It is Christmas. Christmas that lasts forever.

Let us keep the candles and the lights burning bright as we continue to celebrate the Christmas season-for HE is with us always. This gives us great joy and hope! Peace and God’s blessings for the New Year!
