CHRISTMAS GREETING

OF HIS BEATITUDE LUBOMYR

Dearly Beloved in Christ!

Today – on the Sunday of the Holy Fathers – the Gospel told us about the genealogy of Jesus Christ from Abraham to the birth of our Savior. Listening to this detailed list of generations, it may be understand that the coming of Christ to the people was prepared in advance, that his appearance on the earth was planned by our Heavenly Father. Moreover, not only the birth, but also the entire life of Jesus Christ has been foreseen by the prophets. An example of this we find again in the holy Gospel: when the three wise men from the East stayed with Herod in order to find out where the new King was born, he called the scribes, who without a doubt say that the Messiah is to come to the world in Bethlehem in Judea, “because thus was said by the prophet” (Mt 2:5).

Dearly Beloved in Christ, I bring your attention to this because as we think over the events of our daily lives, we tend to think that they occur by chance. We often think that everything could be different. Sometimes it seems that everything around is unchecked, that the Lord God forgot about the world. However, our faith is based on God's Revelation, which gives us an opposite response: everything that happens in our personal and public life, except sin, corresponds to God's plan. Proof of this we find in the life of Jesus Christ, from the promise of the Messiah to our first parents in the paradise until His glorious resurrection. Thus arises the next question: why does the Lord God allow circumstances that are unpleasant for us or even cause us great suffering? Jesus Christ in the Gospel from Luke answers this when he speaks about the further history and the development of various tragic events that have to happen in the future. His words are: “This will give you an opportunity to witness” (Luke 21:13). If there were no hunger, there would be no one to feed; if there were no thirst, there would be no one’s thirst to quench; if there were no strangers, there would be no one to receive; if there were no patients or prisoners, there would be no one to visit. If there were no Christmas, there would not be Good Friday and Easter. Thus everything that happens around us, even the most tragic, is God's plan for us which gives us the opportunity to witness for Christ and seek truth, justice, and good.

Page 7: Parish Bulletin - stbasilregina.comstbasilregina.com/documents/2010-12-12.pdf · 12/12/2010  · Нехай Господь благослоить і помилує! A warm welcome

It would seem that these thoughts have nothing to do with the joyful Christmas time, when people gather at a common table, exchange gifts, sing carols, and visit each other. In a fact, the essence of the great feast of Christmas is not in these external and fleeting moments, the essence of this feast is that the only begotten Son of God came among us to implement fully the plan of the Heavenly Father for our salvation. That is why my biggest wish for all of us is that this truth that God is with us occupied the main place in our Christmas celebrations, so that we keep it in our hearts and minds throughout the year and that it makes our lives meaningful, provides salvation at every moment of our earthly existence.

Dearly Beloved in Christ! At the end of this message I would like to convey to you one request which is somewhat related to the Christmas celebrations as it concerns the land on which Jesus our Savior was born. Today in the Holy Land, particularly in Bethlehem, Christians, who already constitute a minority, are in a very difficult situation. These people need our support. The faithful of the Church in Ukraine still remember well what oppression and persecution are because they suffered from them several decades ago. At the same time they understand the significance of prayer support, for they asked for such support from their brothers and sisters who at that time lived abroad. Of course, the fate of Christians in the Holy Land is different from that which we had in the past years, but it's still very difficult and we must help them. Let us commend to the merciful Lord the inhabitants of this land on which His only begotten Son was born and the Christians – His faithful followers. Let this be our Christmas gift to them.

Sincerest wishes to you, blessed and joyful Christmas!

Let the Blessing of the Lord be upon you!

Christ is born! + LUBOMYR

Christmas message, 2010

The angels sang of peace on Christmas night. The Prophets had promised peace. Each celebration of the Eucharist we proclaim it and share it with one another. Christ’s peace is much more than the absence of war and violence, important though these are. It does not concern stillness and quiet, though these are vital for our wellbeing.

Page 8: Parish Bulletin - stbasilregina.comstbasilregina.com/documents/2010-12-12.pdf · 12/12/2010  · Нехай Господь благослоить і помилує! A warm welcome

When, as children, we listened to the Christmas story, the part that tugged at our hearts was when the travelers to Bethlehem found there was no room in the inn. With a childlike simplicity we thought that if we were the innkeeper we would make sure there was room for Joseph, Mary and the Christ child. Christmas is one of those special occasions when, as adults, we have the opportunity to open our hearts to people less fortunate than ourselves. In many ways this is the true message of Christmas. As God the Father gave us the gift of His son, we have the opportunity to give to others. May this Christmas season find us with open and giving hearts especially for those of God’s people for whom there is still no room in the inn. Merry Christmas.

The peace Christ offers is a renewed and whole relationship that brings all into unity and harmony: God and humanity, heaven and earth, nature and society, brothers and sisters, no matter how estranged.

God’s saving justice is always accompanied by peace. The Lord who “guides our feet into the way of peace” (Luke 1.79) is the One who scatters the proud, brings down the powerful, sends the rich away empty, lifts up the lowly, and fills the hungry with good things (Luke 1.51-53). The Blessed Messenger who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation (Isaiah 52.7) is the Suffering Servant, “rejected by others, a man of suffering” (Isaiah 53.3).

Willingness to serve while ready to be disappointed and even hurt is part of what it means to be a follower of Christ. Christmas Day is followed by the feast of Saint Stephen, a deacon and the first Christian martyr. As a result of the birth of Jesus, the Holy Innocents were massacred under the order of King Herod. The wonder and joy of Christmas envelope the helplessness of humanity and also the hope that comes from kindness and compassion.

As we celebrate this Christmas, may we be renewed by our hunger for justice and our desire for compassion. Let us rededicate ourselves to our mission as peacemakers, as suffering servants with Christ. This was the humble, vulnerable sign given to the shepherds that first Christmas night: “You will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.”

The peace of Christ be with us all this Christmas.
