Lent 2017 at Holy Trinity

LENTEN CUSTOMS As Catholics have done for millennia, we ask for blessed ashes to be publicly put on our foreheads to indicate we have made a decision to change for the better by deepening prayer, lessening our eating and increase our charitable work. TODAY’S BULLETIN INSERT When You Are Asked leaflet #3, “Moral Principles Catholics Should Know” in next week’s bulletin. (Yellow leaflet #1 was distributed last Lent and blue leaflet #2, last Advent.) DAILY MASSES, Monday through Friday, at 9:00 AM and 5:30 PM, and at 7:00 (PM Spanish). SPIRITUAL EVENT LENTEN SERIES, 3 SUNDAYS, 4:00-5:15 pm, guided reflections and faith sharing downstairs in the Murphy Center, by three priests: Mar 5th Fr. Richard Smith Mar 12th Fr. Andrew Andreassi, CO Mar 19th Fr. Patrick Ryan, SJ BISHOP SHEEN EVENT, Sunday, March 26th, 9:30 Mass and 7:00 PM talk, downstairs in the Murphy Center, by Monsignor Hilary Franco, Senior Advisor to the Papal Nuncio (Ambassador) to the United Nations. RECONCILIATION MONDAY, April 10th Individual confessions will be heard here in in every Catholic church in the City, 3:00-9:00 PM. “VIA CRUSIS,” Stations of the Cross in Spanish, Lenten Fridays at 7:00 PM.

Do Something Different This Lent A few of last week’s Bulletin inserts are on the literature racks at the back of the church. “A Journey through Lent” is a fascinating, one-page listing of 20 Positive Lenten Practices that will surprise and delight you.

St. Patrick’s Day A little advanced cheer! Cardinal Dolan has announced a dispensation from the Lenten obligation to abstain from meat on March 17th, the feast day of Saint Patrick, the Patron saint of the Archdiocese of new York. Naturally, we should make up that obligation on another day that week.

LET US PRAY The weekly Christian Meditation Group invites you to join them any Tuesday at 7:00 PM in the rectory for an ancient, quiet way of Christian prayer during Lent. Would you kindly come to the rectory a little earlier than 7:00 PM.

Sophia, ChurchMouse

Did you hear about a Washington-based Buffalo politician whose good Catholic mother told him, “In order to get to heaven, you have to have letters of reference from poor people”? Whoa! Perfectly put and perfectly apt for Lent 2017, don’t you agree?

The “Business” Side of Holy Trinity Parish

Keeping you informed about the financial management of Holy Trinity, the material needs of which depend almost exclusively on your weekly contributions. A parish Finance Council, which advises the pastor on fiscal matters, is mandated by the Code of Canon Law.

* * * * * * * * Parish Financials, FY 2016

You may find extra copies of the Financials (inserted in last week’s bulletin last Sunday) on the literature rack in the back of the church. The four-member Financial Advisory Council met with the pastor and parish bookkeeper two weeks ago to review the Parish financials. Normally distributed in mid-January, it was delayed this year due to the Capital Campaign activities. We are happy to share with you the facts and figures of your parish stewardship today. * * * * * * * *

Daylight Savings begins next week– Don’t forget to “Spring Forward”!

* * * * * * * * A Reflection – “THE TEMPTER APPROACHED …” “The [attempt to ‘be like gods’ is the] sin of the first Adam (Hebrew: adam, humankind) described by Paul: transgression of the divine order established from the beginning. According to Genesis, God created humankind as the highest of all creatures, but still as creature. Only God is God. When human beings attempt to place themselves on a par with their Creator, sin and death follow. Paul invokes the Old Testament view that both sin and death separate one from God. But the obedience of the second Adam, Christ, restores right order to all creation with an ‘abundance of grace and … and the gift of justification.’ Matthew presents Jesus, the second Adam, responding to the tempter with complete reliance on God. Jesus banishes [the devil] with the final word: ‘The Lord, your God … alone shall you serve.’”
