LESSONS & CAROLS December 18 at 7 P.M.

. On Sunday, December 18 at 7:00 PM, the Holy Trinity Schola Cantorum (i.e., the 11:15 Choir) will present a Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols – a service of Scripture and Song in celebration of the Coming of Our Savior. Patterned after the traditional service of Lessons & Carols offered annually at King’s College, Cambridge, this beautiful celebration will include nine different readings from Holy Scripture by parishioners (children and adults), lay staff and clergy, punctuated by magnificent works of choral music for Advent and Christmas. The pinnacle of the service will be a performance of the Oratorio de Noël by Camille Saint-Saëns, accompanied by a string quartet, harp and organ. There will also be many time-honored congregational Christmas carols. As this is not simply a “concert,” but a religious service, admission is FREE, although donations to the Holy Trinity music program are heartily appreciated. Please mark your calendars and bring your friends and neighbors. It will be a wonderful opportunity for the Parish family and community to come together to celebrate the season. A holiday reception in the Murphy Center will follow, where everyone can meet many members of our talented choir, led by Music Director Dr. Andrew Yeargin.

Christmas for Abraham House

As we have done for the past several years, we have set up in the church a very special “Angel” Christmas Tree for Abraham House. Abraham House is a program run by French brothers and sisters and local volunteers which ministers to the families of the incarcerated. Each of the little angel ornaments on the tree will have the name, age, sex, and size of a person (adult or child) in need of a practical gift. You are invited to take an angel (or two!) and shop! The ornament will also serve as your name tag, to be securely attached to your gift. Wrapped presents should be brought to the Rectory by the weekend of December 10-11th.

This is very cool and illustrates how deeply our Christian faith is imbedded in our popular culture. Susanna Spencer at churchpop.com has written a very informative article (with a playlist), entitled, “Twelve Secular Christian Songs that are Actually about Advent!” The old-fashioned songs illustrate the expectation and longing that are characteristic of the beautiful (if neglected) liturgical season preceding the birth of Christ in history. Think about them: It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas, Silver Bells, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth, Last Christmas, I’ll Be Home for Christmas, White Christmas, Frosty the Snowman, We Need a Little Christmas, White Christmas, Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer, and It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year. Very cool, yes? Longing makes the celebration sweeter … every time. Happy Advent!

HOLY TRINITY SUNDAY EVENING CONCERT SERIES
