The academic program embodies the curriculum areas of religion, mathematics, language arts, science, social studies and fine arts. The course of study for grades K-8 meets all the requirements of the Archdiocese of Mobile Office of Catholic Schools and the Alabama State Department of Education. The textbooks used by the students are from a recommended list issued by the Archdiocese of Mobile.

Grading System

Student report cards present a concise picture of achievement and conduct in all subject areas. The parent and child should review each report to note strengths and weaknesses. The report cards should never be used to compare a student with another, but rather as a tool by which students can compete with themselves to achieve their highest potential. Report cards are issued quarterly.

Conduct and Discipline Code: G = Good, I = Inconsistent, U = Unsatisfactory

Kindergarten students are evaluated using C, S, N:

C - Demonstrates consistently, S - Demonstrates sometimes, N - Needs continued development

Grades 1 and 2 are evaluated using an A, B, C, D, F scale (see below) and a 4, 3, 2, 1 scale:

Guidance Counselor

A counselor provides individual, classroom and small group counseling, coordinates outreach, educates students regarding sexual harassment and bullying, and coordinates the Archdiocesan Child Protection Program for our school. The school counselor also assumes principal duties in their absence. Counselors are required by law to report suspected child abuse or neglect.

Homework

Homework is an integral part of the school program. It is designed to supplement, complement, and reinforce classroom teaching and learning. Since individual differences cause student performance to vary greatly, it is impossible to set strict time limits on the amount of homework given. If a child, working steadily, cannot complete the work in a reasonable amount of time, the parent and teacher should meet to discuss the issue. Since each student is expected to complete all homework assignments, failure to do so will alter the student's grade for the term. Parents are encouraged to take an active interest in homework assignments in order to detect problems in understanding, but should NOT feel free to excuse a child from doing homework in order that he or she may attend a party, a game/practice, or any other social event.

Types of homework assignments include, but are not limited to the following:

1. Complete unfinished classroom assignments. 2. Additional practice to strengthen new skills introduced in class. 3. Researching long-term or short-term projects. 4. Extended classroom reading. 5. Study material for a test. 6. Other assignments as specified by the teacher.

Late work and its grade will be accepted at the discretion of the teacher. Teachers may require students to redo an assignment if it is not submitted in a satisfactory manner. Homework is to be done the night it is assigned.

Honor Roll

Students receive Honor Roll Certificates according to the following guidelines: High achievement will be recognized at the end of each quarter for 3.5 GPA. Within grades 3 – 8, Honor Roll certificates will be presented. Conduct may prohibit a

student from Honor Roll recognition.

Library and Media Center

Students are encouraged to read books and use other educational materials available in the school. Students are limited to having two books checked out at any time, unless more are needed for a project. The due date is two weeks following the checkout date, but the books may be returned sooner or renewed for two more weeks. Overdue books should be returned prior to report card distribution. Students are financially responsible for any lost or damaged book.

The use of iPads is encouraged in all grades. However, damage to an iPad or other technology device due to reckless or negligent action caused by a student will require that student to replace the device at their own expense. Furthermore, the inappropriate use of technology will result in the loss of privileges for a period of time to be determined by the teacher or principal.

Liturgy

All students will participate in the Catholic Mass offered weekly and on Holy Days of Obligation throughout the school year. Each grade will be responsible for participating in the services as much as they are able. Each class will be responsible for participating and planning the weekly celebration of the Eucharist. Parents/guardians are always welcome to attend and pray with their child and the school family.

Lockers

Middle school students will be afforded the use of a single locker. These lockers may not be decorated or damaged in any way. Costs for damages to a locker will be directed to the parent/guardian of the student who owns the locker. Students will not be allowed to share or enter a locker belonging to another student. No personal locks may be used.

Physical Education

The physical education program at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic School requires active participation from students in grades K-8. The program is based on the State Department of Education Course of Study. The program is designed to meet the safety, health, physical and recreational needs of the students while fostering a Christian attitude toward good sportsmanship. All students must participate and dress out (grades 2-8) in Physical Education unless prohibited by a doctor. A doctor’s written recommendation is required and must be on file at school to excuse a student from P.E. Students who are out of P.E. for an extended amount of time may be given alternate assignments for assessment.

Promotion/ Retention

19

Page 20: Parent/Student Handbook - Most Pure Heart of Mary …heartofmaryschoolmobile.org/wtdoc/HOMHandbook_2017-2018.docx · Web viewParent/Student Handbook. 201. 7 ... – Students involved

In decisions to “Promote or Retain” a student, the following factors must be considered:

1. Current report card grades Retention in Grades K: At least two “1’s” in Reading or two “1’s” in Math for quarter grades

(Student yearly averages are not used in Grades 1 and 2 for this determination). Retention in Grades 1-8: A yearly average of “F” in two core academic areas in grades 1- 8.

(Religion, English, Reading, Math, Social Studies and Science) 2. Past academic records, previous grade retention, standardized test scores. 3. Age, emotional development and social skills of student. 4. Present grade placement 5. Present family history: divorce, death, siblings, etc. and parent support 6. Regular attendance 7. Approval of the principal

On the elementary level, a summer program cannot correct a year’s deficiency. Summer work may be given as tutorial, reinforcement, and enrichment to assist the student when returning to school. Students will be required to successfully complete the prescribed school curriculum prior to promotion to the next grade.

Neither administration nor faculty will provide letters of recommendation for students who apply to other schools; this does not apply to college admission letters. Letters of recommendation, with the approval of administration, can be provided for students who are applying for enrichment or extra-curricular programs.

Sacramental Preparation

The sacramental life of Catholic children is an important component of the religion program. Parents are required to be active partners in the preparation of their children for these sacraments. The sacraments are only conferred on students baptized in the Roman Catholic tradition; Baptismal certificates must be on file in the office.

First Reconciliation – Catholic students in second grade receive preparation and participate in a penance service in April.

First Eucharist/Holy Communion – Catholic students in second grade, after receiving the sacrament of reconciliation, receive preparation and participate in First Holy Communion.

Penance – Students in grades 3 – 8 will receive the sacrament of reconciliation one time minimally during the school year.

Rite of Christian Initiation for Children (RCIC) – Any student interested in Catholic formation and baptism may contact the Religious Education Director and make arrangements for course of study, which begins in January of each year.

SCHOOL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

Cafeteria Policy

20

Page 21: Parent/Student Handbook - Most Pure Heart of Mary …heartofmaryschoolmobile.org/wtdoc/HOMHandbook_2017-2018.docx · Web viewParent/Student Handbook. 201. 7 ... – Students involved

Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic School participates in the Federal Food Program. Parents may apply for either free or reduced price meals. Applications must be completed every school year . A monthly calendar of menus for breakfast and lunch is issued. Students not wanting the meal served may bring their own lunch. Due to regulations accompanying the Federal Program, students are not permitted to bring fast food or soft drinks to the cafeteria. If your student has an allergy to any food/drink, a physician’s report must be on file in the school office before substitutions to the menu can be made.

Breakfast is served daily from 7:20 a.m. until 7:40 a.m. All meals meet USDA requirements. Meal payments are to be made in advance to the Cafeteria Manager and can be left in the school office.

Teachers will monitor students’ eating habits and table manners. Students should bring appropriately sized portions for one serving of any snack or drink. Appropriate behavior is emphasized at all times. All children may participate in the Lunch Program unless a note from the parent/guardian or doctor states otherwise. Eating is permitted only in the School Cafeteria – not in school building, or classrooms.

Candy, Drinks, Food, Toys, etc. Policy

Students may not bring or have in their possession food, drinks, toys, candy, or gum or excessive amounts of money. There should be no food or drinks in the classroom without the expressed permission of the classroom teacher. *Toys include media devices and fidget spinners. Should a student be found with these items, the items will be confiscated and disciplinary consequences may result.

Care of Textbooks, Materials and Equipment Policy

In an effort to help ALL families with the expense of textbooks, a Lending Textbook System was initiated through the generosity of many benefactors. This system is for the rental of hard covered books. A fee of $10.00 is paid for the use of each book. Books are returned at the end of the school year and are checked for damage, loss and or replacement value. All hard covered books rented MUST have book covers to protect the “life” of the book. Books that are not properly covered or cared for will be brought to the office until a cover is purchased and/or a fine is paid. Consumable books, are purchased at the school as well. Lists of needed books and supplies are provided to parents.

Students are expected to take care of textbooks, workbooks, and all other required materials. Respect for these materials should grow from self-respect. The cost of the materials should be brought up as a consideration as well. Book care will be monitored during the school year. If a book is lost, damaged, or misplaced the student will have to purchase another in a timely manner so as not to be without needed materials for the learning process. Damage to an iPad or other technology device due to reckless or negligent action by a student will require that student to replace the device at their own expense. All students are expected to have all needed books and supplies on the first day of school to be in attendance.

Students are responsible for the care of materials, especially rented books and equipment. They should leave all they use in proper order. Each classroom teacher and staff person enforces a sense of responsibility. The cleanliness and care of the school environment is the responsibility of every child and adult.

Cell Phone Policy

Students may NOT carry cell phones on their person on campus. If a cell phone is carried into school, the phone should be dropped off in the school office, labeled, and claimed from the office at the end of the school day. Students may not use their cell phone before or after school without the authorization of a teacher. If the student does NOT turn in the phone on his/her own, the phone will be confiscated, labeled, and kept in the school office until claimed by a parent. Should a second occasion or subsequent occasions occur a $10.00 fee will be required before it is returned.

Child and Adolescent Protection Policy

In a pastoral effort to respond to a heightened need for the protection of our children, the Archdiocese of Mobile is requiring a catechesis be given to children in all grades of our Catholic Schools and Parish Religious Education Programs. This catechesis is required to be completed during Respect Life Week, the first week in October each school year. Principles for Child Protection Catechesis, Teaching Objectives for Parents and Teachers and Learning Objectives for Students form the foundation for lessons to be taught in the classroom to support parents in providing the education and guidance children need to be safe.

All priests, deacons, school administrators, teachers, youth ministers, parish catechists, support personnel, coaches and volunteers will be required to attend training in the prevention and recognition of all forms of abuse against children. In addition, parents will be given information to help provide their children the guidance needed to be safe. Finally, all persons who work with children in the Archdiocese of Mobile will be required to have background checks.

Communications with Minors Policy, per the Archdiocese of Mobile

All who serve the mission of the Catholic Church within the ministries of the Archdiocese of Mobile must comply with this “Policy for Communication with Minors via Social Media and Other Electronic Communication” and with the “Child Protection Policy” issued by the Archdiocese. The “Child Protection Policy” may be obtained by visiting www.mobilearchdioces.org, by contacting the Office of Child Protection via e-mail at [email protected] , or by telephone at 251-434-1559. In case of any conflict between the two policies, the “Child Protection Policy” shall govern. For purposes of this policy, the following definitions apply:

A. Social Media – any web site that is driven by content of its members and allows for member interaction. Common examples of Social Media include, but are not limited to: Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, You Tube, Flickr, etc.

B. Other Electronic Communication – electronic communication technologies that are not defined as Social Media. Common examples include, but are not limited to: cell phone, landline telephone, e-mail, texting, etc.

When communicating with minors using Social Media or Other Electronic Communication:

22

Page 23: Parent/Student Handbook - Most Pure Heart of Mary …heartofmaryschoolmobile.org/wtdoc/HOMHandbook_2017-2018.docx · Web viewParent/Student Handbook. 201. 7 ... – Students involved

A. The Primary purpose of such communication shall be for providing information related to a ministry or event and not for socialization or other personal interaction. Counseling of minors through such communication methods is not permitted.

B. Parents must be notified of the methods of communication, which are used in each particular ministry and must be granted access to participate in such communications.

C. There must be at least two adults with administrative rights for each Social Media account used for ministry communication. Teachers may use “closed” Web-based Education Applications with students. Use requires administrative approval and monitoring by two school faculty members. Personal Social Media accounts must not be used for ministry communication.

D. Social Media groups should be “closed” or “private” groups, with administrator approval required to join.

E. Communication through Social Media groups should also be sent to group members by Other Electronic Communication means as well (i.e., Facebook messages should also be sent by e-mail or Rediker).

F. When using a ministry Social Media account, adults must not initiate “friend” requests with minors but may accept “friend” requests from minors who are involved in the particular ministry.

G. As a general rule, neither personal nor ministry Social Media accounts should be used to contact minors individually. If minors contact particular adults engaged in ministry (other than a “friend” request), the ministry account should be used to reply by sending a group message (i.e., when the personal contact was for information relevant to all in the group). When contact is such that a group response is not appropriate, the adult is to avoid using a personal Social Media account to respond. In those unusual cases where Social Media is used to respond, adults should maintain copies of all such messages.

H. Acceptable hours for communication with minors via Other Electronic Communication shall be between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Communication outside of the acceptable hours may be used only in emergency situations or to communicate time-sensitive information related to the ministry or event. Communications via Other Electronic Communication should be to a group rather than to individual minors, where practical.

I. Online “chatting” with minors is not permitted. J. The depiction of minors in photos or videos on ministry Social Media sites should be

limited to documentation or promotion of group activities and must not be used for the identification of individual group members. “Tagging” or other identification of minors shown in photos or videos is not permitted.

Drug Policy

It is strictly forbidden for any student to use, distribute or possess drugs, including alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, narcotics, inhalants, hallucinogens, opiates, controlled substances, paraphernalia or any material represented to be an imitation of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, narcotics, inhalants, hallucinogens, opiates, or controlled substances on school premises, in a school owned vehicle, or during any school-sponsored function. In addition, the possession, use or distribution of electronic cigarettes, vapor or other substitute forms of cigarettes is also prohibited on school premises, in a school owned vehicle or during any school-sponsored function. Any student found to be under the influence or in possession of said drugs will be subject to disciplinary action.

Field trips are educational experiences that will supplement the student’s classwork. Signed permission slips are required so that parents/guardians are informed about each trip. Telephone permission is NOT acceptable and will prevent a student from participating in field trip experiences.

Field trips are a privilege, which may be lost due to inappropriate conduct, neglect of or failure to complete required academic work. Students not attending the field trip are asked to remain home.

Trips must be authorized. Chaperone to child ratios will be enforced. Liability and medical release forms to participate must be on record, one with

Should a student become ill or have an accident during the school day, a call will be made to the parent immediately to inform them of the condition. A mutual decision will be made on how best to address the needs of the child. In an emergency situation the parent and 911 will be called. The Emergency Information Form previously completed by the parent will be used as a guideline for the paramedics. Weapon Policy, per the Archdiocese of Mobile

Our Lord Jesus Christ came that we might have life and have it in all fullness. Therefore, Catholic Schools promote the sanctity of human life and express concern for the dignity of every human being. It is essential that Catholic Schools provide a safe academic and social environment for their students, teachers, staff, and parents. Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic School Wellness Policy GuidelinesNutrition/Nutrition Education Goals

Nutrition topics are included in the Alabama Courses of study for science, health and family/consumer sciences. These will be taught in the classroom, in and interactive manner, promoting skill students need to adopt healthy eating behaviors. Where possible, teachers will integrate nutrition education into the other curriculums at all grade levels. The subjects of math, science, social studies, language arts and art all include concepts that can be taught while reinforcing good nutrition. Examples include graphing number of fruits and vegetables eaten in a day, week or month; using fractions with food recipes; journal recordings of food advertisements; planting and taking care of school gardens.

Nutrition education information will be reviewed by a qualified nutrition professional who is specialized in school-base nutrition.

The school cafeteria serves as a “learning laboratory” to allow students to apply critical thinking skills taught in the classroom.

Nutrition education will involve sharing information with families and the broader community to positively impact students and the health of the community.

Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic School will provide information to families that encourage them to teach their children about health and nutrition and to provide nutritious meals for their families.

Students will be encouraged to start each day with a healthy breakfast.

As required by the State Board of Education’s July 12, 2005 resolution, all school staff will attend a minimum of one teacher in-service per year focused on nutrition and physical activity. The goal of these trainings will be to give teachers skills for interactive learning strategies for instruction; help teachers assess and improve their own eating practices; and reinforce their importance as role models to students.

The National Association of State Boards of Education recommends that students should be provided adequate time to eat lunch, at least 10 minutes for breakfast and 20 minutes for lunch, from the time the student is seated.

Lunch periods are scheduled as near the middle of the school day as possible.

Cafeterias include enough serving areas so that students do not have to spend too much time waiting in line.

Dining areas are attractive and have enough space for seating all students.

Food will not be used as a reward or a punishment for student behaviors

The child nutrition program will ensure that all students have affordable access to the varied and nutritious foods they need to stay healthy and learn well.

The school will strive to increase participation in the available federal Child Nutrition programs (e.g. school lunch and school breakfast).

Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic School will employ a food service director, who is properly qualified, certified and/or credentialed according to current professional standards to administer the school food service program and satisfy reporting requirements.

Page 41: Parent/Student Handbook - Most Pure Heart of Mary …heartofmaryschoolmobile.org/wtdoc/HOMHandbook_2017-2018.docx · Web viewParent/Student Handbook. 201. 7 ... – Students involved

All Child Nutrition Programs staff will have earned a high school diploma or G.E.D. certification.

All food service personnel shall have adequate pre-service training in food service operations including training on Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP).

A Child’s need for nutrients does not end when school does. Therefore, it is encouraged that CNP assist with operating a summer food service program for children and adolescents who are eligible for federal program support.

Guidelines for reimbursable school meals shall be according to and not less restrictive than regulations and guidance issued by the Secretary of Agriculture pursuant to subsections (a) and (b) of section 10 of the Child Nutrition Act (42 U.S.C. 1779) and section(f)(1) and 17(a) of the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act (42 U.S.C 1758(f)(1), 1766(a)(0), as those regulations apply to schools and those regulations established by the Alabama State Board of Education.

All foods made available on campus comply with the state and local food safety and sanitation regulations. Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) plans and guidelines are implemented to prevent food illness in schools.

For the safety and security of the food and facility access to the food service operations are limited to Child Nutrition staff and authorized personnel. For further guidance see the US Department of Agriculture food security guidelines.
