Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
FAQ 1: Subject Criteria
My child’s results does not meet the criteria for aparticular subject which he/she intends to take. Willthe school consider lowering the subject offeringcriteria?
The setting of qualifying criteria is to safeguard the well-being of our students so that they do not have to strugglewith any subject(s) which they may find difficulty coping. However, the school does look at the cohort’s overallperformance to conduct timely review on whether there is aneed to adjust any subject offering criteria.
FAQ 2: Triple Science
a) Do I need to do Triple Science in JC to qualify for Medicine?
• No, you need a GOOD PASS in H2 Chemistry + a PASS in either H2Physics or H2 Biology.
• There is no longer a Triple Science Combination in JC. There is alsono H2 Physics + H2 Biology combination, as H2 Chemistry is thecompulsory Science subject for students offering two H2 Sciences.
b) Do I need to do Triple Science in Sec School to qualify forMedicine?
• No, you only need to qualify for two H2 Sciences in JC (Chemistry +Physics or Biology)
• To qualify for that, you need a PASS in 2 Pure Sciences or a PASS in1 Pure Science + a Distinction in 1 Combined Science
FAQ 3: Use of Humanities Subject for Computation of L1R5 for JC Admission
Is it compulsory to include Humanities in the computation ofL1R5, and if so, which Humanities subject should beincluded?
• Yes, it is MOE’s policy that at least one Humanities subjectshould be included in the L1R5 computation.
• If your child is doing only Combined Humanities, thenCombined Humanities will be included.
• If your child is doing Pure Literature or Pure Geography inaddition to Combined Humanities, he/she will have a choiceto include either one or both Humanities subjects.
FAQ 4: Relevance of Humanities Subjects for Poly Admission
How important are the Humanities subjects foradmission to Polytechnics?
If your child is applying for admission to courses incommerce and business, mass media andcommunications, and psychology, a good grade inHumanities will put him/her in good stead as thesecourses will require him/her to read widely and tohave good analytical and writing skills.
FAQ 5: Additional Mathematics
a) Is Additional Mathematics very important for admission toJCs and Polytechnics?• It is a requirement for H2 Mathematics in JC but some JCs
may consider allowing students with only GCE ‘O’ levelElementary Mathematics to study H2 Math in JC if thestudents qualify for the Science Stream.
• For polys, either Elementary Maths and Additional Maths canbe used for ELR2B2 group 1 R2 subjects.
b) Can my child take Additional Mathematics as a privatecandidate concurrently if he did not meet the pre-requisite?• No. School candidates are not allowed to sign up other
subjects as a private candidate in the same nationalexamination.
