Summary of Changes

• The content of all AS and A Level qualifications is being reviewed

• AS and A Level have been “de-coupled”

• Both AS Level and A Level will be examined at the end of the course (ie not modular)

• Very little non-exam assessment

• The grades will remain as A* – E

A student in current Y11 chooses to do Biology, Maths, PE and Geography to A Level.

Their Biology course will be the new reformed course, and so will be 2 year with A Level exams at the end.

Their other subjects will be as current AS and A Level, so they will take AS modules in Maths, PE and Geography at the end of Y12, counting for 50% of their qualification. The A2 exams at the end of Y13 will contribute the other 50%.

English & Maths GCSE post 16

From August 2014 students who had not reached a good pass in English and/or maths GCSE by age 16 have had to continue to work towards achieving these qualifications (or an approved interim qualification as a stepping stone to GCSE).

Reformed GCSE

• Be assessed mainly by terminal exam

• Be graded 9 (high) to 1 (low), with a C being 4/5. Performance below a 1 will be unclassified – ie a U.

• Only be tiered if it can’t be avoided - in maths and sciences, for example: foundation tier 5 to 1; higher tier 9 to 4

• These are two different scales, with much changing in the calculation between the two
