  • NEW WPI SPORTS AND RECREATION CENTER *Over 140,000-square feet of new sports and recreation space; construction began in May 2010 with completion by Fall 2012. A four-court 29,000-square foot gymnasium for recreation, athletics, and special events (Robotics, Open Houses, Career Fairs, etc.) will be the centerpiece of the activity spaces. A three-lane elevated jogging track will encircle the gymnasium. The natatorium will feature a 38-meter competition swimming & diving pool (25-yard swimming section with a moveable bulkhead separating the diving well) that will accommodate classes, recreation and varsity practices and competitions. Pool support spaces will include seating for 250 spectators, a lifeguard room, and storage and filtration areas. 14,000-square feet of fitness space on two floors of the building will have cardio equipment, free weights and circuit training equipment for general users and varsity athletic teams. Specialized spaces, such as multipurpose studios, three convertible racquetball/squash courts and an eight-person rowing tank will occupy nearly 10,000 additional square feet. A varsity athletics training room at field level will house athletic trainers, spaces for treatment and taping, and multiple hydrotherapy tanks. Offices for athletic department administrators and coaches, along with conference rooms and support spaces, will be located in the northwest section of the building and overlooking the stadium and fields.
