Year 2 Parents Meeting
ReadingJanuary 2011
2
Aims of workshop
To enable parents to better support children’s reading at home
To inform you on how we measure progress in reading
3
Leveling Children’s reading Levels assigned to every child at the end
of the infant school (Key Stage 1) These are based on teacher assessment Some tasks and tests are given to
moderate teacher assessment The emphasis is on teacher assessment
4
Levels at end of Key Stage 1
At the end of year 1 the national average for a reading level is 1b.
At the end of year 2 it is 2b.In our school we expect some children to
achieve higher.
5
Gathering evidence to level children
Through guided reading Through assessments Through children’s work
in literacy Through the tasks and tests (SATs)
6
To achieve level 1 children will need to … Show a good awareness of how to use a book Recognise some letters and words Understand the significance of punctuation Be able to respond to questions about the text and
illustrations When a child is reading at level one, a running record is
used for assessment purposes. This shows which strategies the child is using to decode unknown words and gives information about their knowledge of sentence structure.
It provides us with the next steps they need in order to progress their reading.
7
Using the level 2 texts Teacher will read the first part of the text Child will read a
specified section A record is kept of the errors made A record is also kept of the strategies used
8
To achieve level 2c children will need to …
Achieve more than 90% independent reading
Use mainly appropriate strategies to decode
Comment on the main characters and key events
Retell the story
9
To achieve level 2b children will need to … Read the text almost entirely accurately
and be well paced in parts of the passage Show some evidence of self correction Be able to comment on the setting and
how the plot links together Be able to retell the story referring to
most of the main events and characters
10
To achieve a level 2a children will need to …
Read the text accurately Be able to scan the text backwards
and forwards if it is not making sense Read independently with pace and
fluency showing a real confidence Retell the story in a balanced way
using key points from the text
11
Comprehension During our assessment weeks, at the end of
each half term we use comprehension papers to help to assess the children’s understanding of what they have read. This is as important as how they are delivering the text.
We use these comprehension papers once a child has reached level 2c as well as continuing with running records.

Reading at homeReading RecordThis for home and school to record what your child has read and also to
comment on their reading.Obviously we would always welcome positive comments. Some parents have said they are never sure what to write. Here are a few suggestions that we would find helpful and I’m, sure your
child would appreciate. We took it in turns to read the pages. We practised the rhyming words for fun. Very good expression. Well done! Only 2 pages of reading today so we discussed the pictures too. This book was easy to read straight through. We discussed what might happen next. We are looking out for capital letters and full stops. This week we chose some books from the library. There are ch and sh sounds to practise in this book. Very clear independent reading today.
Thank you for coming.
We hope that you have found the information useful.
