Curriculum: Beyond the BasicsPUSD’s curriculum is based on the learning standards adopted by the California Department of Education.Standards were designed to encourage the highest level of achievement of every student by defining theknowledge, concepts, and skills that students should acquire in specific subjects at each grade level.

The Pasadena Unified School District serves approximately 18,600 students in Altadena,Pasadena, and Sierra Madre. Our schools offer an academically rigorous program in anenvironment that engages students to become lifelong learners.

Art & MusicReflecting Pasadena’s passion for the arts, visual and performing arts education is a major focus at PUSD schools.PUSD is a designated “Arts for All” school district through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission initiative, andprovides high-quality sequential arts education for students from Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Art is part of the required elementary curriculum in PUSD schools. Art is taught as both a specific subject and asan integral part of core subjects such as social studies and math. To connect classroom learning with the richcultural resources of the Pasadena area, PUSD students regularly visit local museums such as Kidspace, the NortonSimon, the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens, the Armory Center for the Arts, and others. Students also

forge connections with local arts resources through My Masterpieces. This partnership between PUSD and local arts and culturalorganizations links teachers with professional artists to deepen arts instruction in PUSD classrooms.

Music education is also an integral part of the curriculum at PUSD schools. Instrumental music instruction is offered starting in the fifthgrade, with chorus, band, orchestra, drama, dance and more offered at middle and high schools. Annual spring choral and orchestralfestivals showcase the emerging talents of our students.

LibrariesPUSD campus libraries are media centers filled with books, magazines, DVDs, online databases, and other resources. Students activelylearn to connect with ideas, learn to make informed decisions, use information technologies, and, most of all, develop a love of reading.

Although some school libraries extend their hours of operation beyond the school day so that students can explore, research, and continuelearning, access in the elementary schools is limited because of recent severe budget cuts.

Among the most architecturally beautiful rooms of our historic campuses, some, like the library at Eliot Middle School, have outdoorreading gardens where students and teachers can meet and discuss books.

Counseling ServicesAcademic and guidance counselors advise and work with middle and high school students to develop immediateand long-term educational plans according to the student’s interests and needs. Counselors help optimizestudents’ academic progress by outlining class schedules that fulfill high school graduation and college admissionsrequirements. They help students prepare and register for college admissions tests such as the PSAT, SATs, andACT, organize college fairs, serve as liaisons for college and technical schools, and help students apply for financialaid. Counselors are also a critical resource for parents who have questions about students’ academic performanceand preparation for the future.

Physical Education & AthleticsPUSD elementary and middle schools offer physical education, intramural sports and after-school athletics toenrich the physical and educational development of students.

Eliot Middle School won the statewide 2010 Governor’s Fitness Council Challenge, and Webster Elementary, afinalist in the state competition, is one of only seven physical fitness demonstration centers in California. PUSDhigh school teams have a long tradition of athletic excellence and have claimed numerous California InterscholasticFoundation championships.

Meeting Your Child’s Unique NeedsPUSD schools offer free and appropriate services for students who are learning English, are gifted, or have a physical or learning disability.

English LearnersWhen parents or guardians enroll their child at a school in PUSD for the firsttime, they complete a home language survey. If the child speaks a languageother than English at home, the student is tested on listening, speaking, reading and writing English within 30 days. The results of this test determinethe type of classroom that best meets the needs of the child. If the childreceives a score of “less than fluent,” the student is designated an “EnglishLearner.”

Parents are notified about the results of these tests, and informed of programoptions, recommended placement, and the right to opt out. Parents canrequest a different placement option for their child.

Until they attain fluency, students who are English Learners take the CaliforniaEnglish Language Development Test (CELDT) each fall to determine theirprogress in learning English.

PUSD’s goal is that all English Learners be “reclassified” into the Englishmainstream program within three to five years of entering district schools. Results from the CELDT are used to help decide if a student can be reclassifiedor not. English Learners are reclassified as fluent English proficient (FEP) whenthey reach proficient levels on the CELDT, meet California Standards Test (CST)and grade point average standards, and have parent approval.

For more information, contact the Language Assessment and DevelopmentDepartment at 626.396.3600 ext. 88280.

Special NeedsStudents with learning, developmental or otherdisabilities learn side-by-side with other students inmainstream classes. Thirteen percent of PUSD studentsreceive special education services.

Early intervention is critical for children with specialneeds, and PUSD offers a number of tailored infantand early childhood services. Special day classes areavailable for students with moderate to severedisabilities.

If you suspect that your child may have a disability, request a Student Study Team meeting at your schoolsite. Your child's teacher(s) will meet with you todiscuss concerns and strategies for addressing theproblem(s).

If you are new to PUSD, the first step is to schedule anintake meeting. This is an opportunity for us to meetand talk with your child, discuss his or her gifts andneeds with you, and together set goals to provide acontinuum of educational services that will develop thewhole child.

For more information, contact the Special EducationDepartment at 626.396.3600 ext. 88604.

Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) ProgramPUSD’s Gifted and Talented Education(GATE) program philosophy is based on thefollowing:

• Not all students come to the task oflearning with the same experiences andlevels of understanding• All students should be assured equalaccess to the learning process • Students will vary in their rates oflearning and depths of understanding

GATE students are identified in one of thefollowing three areas: intellectual ability, high academic achievement, andalternative identification.

The expectation for GATE students is thattheir learning will surpass grade levelstandards and they will acquire a deeperand more complex understanding ofcontent material both at and above theirgrade levels. We do this by providing allstudents, but especially our GATE students,

with frequent opportunities to apply theirlearning to meaningful tasks within thecontext of small group and independentprojects, and to gain the necessaryresearch and self-directed learning skills toindependently explore their own areas ofinterest.

The GATE program in PUSD is designed toaccommodate gifted/talented students’needs within the regular classroom at eachgrade level through differentiation ofinstruction and the addition of depth, complexity or acceleration to the corecurriculum. Services are offered as anintegral part of the school day andstudents are afforded the opportunity forcontinual progress and intellectual peerinteraction. Teachers can differentiate inthree ways: process (how they teach),content (what they teach), and product(what students produce to demonstratewhat they have learned).

In grades K-2, teachers observe for potentialgiftedness. In grades 3-5, identified studentsmay be placed in a GATE cluster class or inpart-time grouping with other potentiallygifted students.

Sixth through eighth grade students whohave demonstrated high achievement in oneor more areas of academic strength may beeligible to participate in the Middle SchoolAcademic Scholars program. Advancedclasses use a middle school curriculum thatextends the PUSD program of studies indepth and complexity. Advanced classesprovide opportunities to build on theindividual strengths of each student.

In high school, students take rigorous Honorsand Advanced Placement (AP) classes withhigh-achieving peers.

For more information, contact the Giftedand Talented Education Office at626.396.3600, extension 88462.

Student SafetyPasadena Unified School District campuses are focused on learning, with schools organizedand staffed to meet the developmental, emotional, and social needs of students at theelementary, middle and high school level.

DisciplinePUSD schools focus on preparing students for responsible citizenship by fostering self-discipline and personal responsibility.Schools foster a positive culture of discipline based on respect for the individual, others and their property in an environmentfocused on learning.

To encourage a consistent, firm, and fair culture of discipline that affirms positive behavior, PUSD has a standard of conductthat includes the rights and responsibilities of students, a student code of conduct, interventions for specific disruptivebehaviors, and appropriate consequences. Schools may personalize campus rules, but must be consistent with the district-wide standards. Schools follow a defined and progressive set of interventions, remediations, and consequences when astudent misbehaves.

SecurityTo keep students safe both on campus, and as they travel to and from school, PUSD partners with the City of Pasadena totrain campus security personnel and to provide dedicated Safe School Team (SST) officers at secondary campuses.

The “Pasadena Safe Schools Team,“ composed of members of the Pasadena Police Department, provides policing servicesto all middle and high schools located within the City of Pasadena, with an emphasis on conflict resolution, relationship-building, and peer mediation. The Safe Schools Team is fully funded by the City of Pasadena, including salaries, equipment, vehicles and supplies. This frees PUSD funds for core educational purposes. PPD works in collaboration with PUSDadministration and staff to ensure school safety and support student learning.

Emergency PreparednessPreparing for emergencies is part of everyday life in Southern California, and disaster preparedness is a priority in PUSD.Each school has a disaster preparedness plan, with teachers, administrators and other personnel trained to supervise, counsel, and care for students. School buildings must comply with strict earthquake and fire safety standards.

Students practice emergency drills regularly. Our schools have monthly, quarterly and annual drills to prepare foremergencies. Students learn to “drop, cover and hold” during earthquakes and to cover their cough or sneeze to preventthe spread of flu. Developing a culture of respectis at the core of PUSD elementaryschool instruction, and students learnto take pride in themselves and theirwork, while being enriched by thecultural diversity of Altadena,Pasadena, Sierra Madre, and theSouthern California region.

Middle SchoolsA rigorous, developmentally-appropriate middle school program for students in grades six to eight is offered at all middleschools. Our middle school department ensures a high-quality, equitable academic experience for all students. The ExcellentMiddle Schools program seeks to increase the rigor and relevance of our middle school program by allowing more time forinstruction, individualized support and enrichment for students, and teacher collaboration. Middle schools have alsoestablished advisory periods to provide personalized support for students in an individual and/or group setting. Additionally, our middle schools have expanded the range of electives and student activities available to enhance students’ academicexperience, while increasing their exposure to college and career options.

Sixth through eighth grade students who have demonstrated high achievement in one or more areas of academic strengthmay be eligible to participate in the Middle School Academic Scholars program. Advanced classes use a middle schoolcurriculum that extends the PUSD program of studies in depth and complexity. Advanced classes provide opportunities tobuild on the individual strengths of each student.

In middle school, the counseling program focuses on therapidly changing needs of pre-and early adolescents.School counselors help students learn decision-makingskills, and explore future educational and occupationalpossibilities. The program stresses self-conceptdevelopment and the acquisition of social skills neededfor interpersonal relationships. Adjustments are made tofit the unique developmental needs of children ages 11-14, which can be an emotional time as sixth, seventh, andeighth graders begin asserting their independence.Counselors partner with each middle school student tocreate a four-year plan that meets graduationrequirements, and is tailored to the student’s interests, aptitudes, and future educational and occupational goals.

How to read school profilesThe Academic Performance Index (API) measures school improvement. The API is a numeric index that ranges from a low of 200 to a high of 1000 witha statewide target of 800. Schools that fall short of 800 must meet growth targets set each year.

The California Standards Test (CST) assesses student achievement in a variety of subject areas. Students’ scores are reported by five levels: advanced, proficient, basic, below basic and far below basic. Only advanced and proficient levels are considered as meeting grade level standards.

All data provided by the California Department of Education.
