Salt, Sodium, and Your Health Dietitian: Many of the risk factors for hypertension can be controlled, which will also help reduce your risk for heart attack and stroke. These factors include weight, physical activity, diet, and other lifestyle-related behaviors. If you are overweight, focus on improving your diet and exercise habits to lose unwanted pounds. Strive to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most or all days of the week. Eat a balanced diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, and low-fat dairy; and include sources of healthy fats (omega 3’s) like salmon, tuna, walnuts, and flaxseeds. Remember to limit your saturated fat and sodium intake. Keep in mind, just a 5-10% decrease in body weight can help reduce your health risks. Lifestyles that include drinking and smoking regularly also put an individual at greater risk for hypertension. Therefore, it is critical to completely avoid smoking and to limit alcohol consumption to 1-2 drinks or less per day. Talk to your doctor and a registered dietitian to get advice about the diet and exercise plan that’s right for you. Parent: I know I need to cut my sodium intake, but foods just don’t taste as good without salt. How can I prepare lower-sodium foods that are still flavorful? Dietitian: Using spices and herbs is a great way to cut back on sodium when cooking, without sacrificing good taste. Experiment with a variety of herbs and spices in your cooking. For example, try chili peppers, cilantro, cumin, or garlic for hot or spicy dishes. Enhance sweet dishes with allspice, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Use oregano, thyme, savory, basil, and rosemary for Italian foods. Basil, black pepper, bay leaves, and parsley complement just about any dish. (And the good news is that most of these herbs can be freshly-grown, right in your own kitchen!) Limit spices such as garlic salt or onion salt because they contain sodium. Other options to add flavor include vinegar, lemon juice, hot sauce, and low-sodium broths. Once you start incorporating these ingredients into your recipes, you won’t miss the salt. Parent: I never add salt to my foods. Could I still be getting too much sodium? Dietitian: Most of the sodium we eat is from packaged, processed, and restaurant-prepared foods. Because sodium is in almost everything we eat, it is very easy to exceed the recommended 2,300 mg per day in our diets. Not adding salt to your foods is a great habit; but you should also limit your intake of high-sodium packaged or canned foods like soup, canned vegetables, high-sodium condiments, and frozen dinners. Focus on eating fresh, minimally processed foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats. Look for hidden sources of sodium on labels and choose items with less than 20% daily value for sodium. When eating out, order your selections without extra sauces, and ask that your dishes be prepared without salt. Parent: If the body just gets rid of extra sodium, why is too much bad for my health? Dietitian: The kidneys are responsible for excreting extra sodium in the body; however, if you are salt-sensitive, or have kidney problems, your organs may not be able to do this efficiently. When there is too much sodium in your body, it builds up in the blood, along with water, which leads to a rise in blood volume. Increased blood volume means your heart must work even harder, by increasing pressure to pump blood through the body. This results in hypertension, which can eventually lead to heart attacks and strokes. To limit the amount of sodium in your diet, minimize packaged, processed, and fast foods; and use spices and herbs instead of table salt to add flavor. Parent: I have recently been advised by my doctor to go on a low-salt diet. What foods should I eat and which should I avoid?

Dietitian: Be sure to read labels and choose foods that have 20% or less of your daily value for sodium. On a low-salt diet, you should be eating foods like whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy, and fresh lean meats. Below is a list of recommended foods to choose from and options to avoid.

Parent: I take my blood pressure medication on a regular basis. Do I still have to watch my sodium intake?

Dietitian: Typically, if your doctor prescribed blood pressure medication, it means diet and exercise alone are not enough to control your blood pressure. Adding medication to the mix can help; but your medication is most effective if you continue to limit your sodium intake and exercise regularly. Consuming too much sodium in your diet may counteract the desired effects of your medication, especially if you are salt-sensitive. Talk to your doctor and a registered dietitian to get advice about the diet and exercise plan that’s right for you.

Parent: I heard that some fruits and vegetables contain sodium; so why are they recommended on my low-salt diet?

Dietitian: Fresh fruits and vegetables are important in any diet because they provide a variety of vitamins and minerals needed for good health. Fruits and vegetables are also a good source of potassium, which is very important for regulating blood pressure. Some fruits and vegetables do contain sodium, but in very small amounts. The main concern is really with canned vegetables that have added salt. So look for no added salt or low-sodium labels when choosing canned foods.

Parent: I am trying to reduce my sodium intake. Are salt substitutes or sea salt better options?

Dietitian: Because they are made up of potassium chloride, instead of sodium chloride, salt substitutes are lower in sodium compared to table salts. However, these substitutes should still be used in moderation and may not be safe for everyone, especially people with kidney, heart, or liver problems. The real difference between sea salt and table salt is in taste and texture. Yet, sea salt is similar to table salt in sodium content and should also be used in moderation. Better alternatives to add extra taste and flavor to foods are herbs and spices that are naturally low in sodium.

Choose these:• Low-fat milk/yogurt/natural cheese• Low-sodium vegetable juice• Whole-grain bread and unsalted crackers• Oatmeal• Fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables or low-sodium canned vegetables• Fresh or frozen meats• Spaghetti or rice without salt• Homemade or low-sodium soups• Unsalted nuts/popcorn• Tabasco sauce

Limit these:• Processed cheeses• Regular vegetable juice• Bread and crackers with added salt• Instant hot cereals• Canned vegetables• Smoked meats/deli meats/lunch meats• Packaged rice or instant noodles• Canned soups• Chips, salted nuts• Soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce
