Parent Newsletter
April 29, 2016
Dear HMS Community, Our return from April vacation has proven to be busy and productive as we enter the home stretch of the 2015 – 2016 school year. The PARCC testing window has begun, and our eighth graders have now completed their ELA testing sessions. Today, the seventh graders are paticipating in their first session for ELA. I am happy to say that to this point, the sessions have gone very smoothly in regard to our technology infrastructure. Most of the students that have taken the PARCC for ELA that I have spoken to report that they felt confident, and thought that they did well. The teachers and I have been reminding students that the PARCC test is not anything that they need to feel stressed out about, and that all that they need to do is try their very best. Eighth grade students that participated in the DC Trip Cookie Dough Fundraiser must pick up their orders next Wednesday, May 4th. Students with three or less orders will be given the opportunity to pick up their cookie dough near the end of the school day, and bring it home on the bus or with their ride home. If a student has more than three orders, they are asked to pick up the orders between 2:30 and 6:00 pm. If your child has more than three orders, and you normally pick him or her up at the end of the school day, we ask that you park in the lot in the rear of the school next Wednesday, and come in after 2:30 with your child to pick up the orders. Students will not be allowed to take more than three orders with them home on the bus. Also, all orders must be picked up by 6:00 pm. We do not have adequate freezer space to store any orders overnight, so please mark your calendars and make arrangements to have the cookie dough orders picked up on May 4th between 2:30 and 6:00 pm. The PTO Fundraiser orders are due next Friday, May 6th. The HMS Drama Club production, Something Cursed This Way Comes, will be take place at Seekonk High School on Friday, May 13th at 7 pm, and Saturday, May 14th at 2 pm. Tickets for the show are now on sale. In order to purchase tickets, students must obtain a Permission/Order Form during lunch, and return it with the payment by the end of the day on May 6th. Ticket prices for students and adults are $5 each. The price per ticket for children under ten years old is $2, and infants/toddlers are free. This week I am completing my final teacher observation reports of the school year. I could not be any more proud of our faculty, as I continue to see the time and dedication that they have put in when it comes to planning engaging, interactive, challenging, and fun lessons for their students. I believe that the quality of education that our students receive at HMS is second to none, and have enjoyed being part of so many classroom lessons with the students and their teachers throughout this school year. I am including the HMS End of the Year Calendar for one final time in the newsletter for your reference. Don’t forget, the calendar, along with a lot of other useful information can be found on the Principal’s Page of our website. Two important dates which I would like to highlight for you are May 19th—DC Trip Parent Meeting at 6:00 PM, and May 20th—8th Grade Semi-‐Formal Dance. The Semi-‐Formal is sponsored by our PTO, and is free of charge. Dr. Whalen

The Plane Came Down
Plane came down taking three music l’rds Buddy Holly, Rich Valens, Big Bopper The plane went down, thus silencing their ch’rds And they w’re always the best show stoppers The times w’re so sad, that February People cri’d out “Where is the music anon?!” Lots came to their resting cemet’ry To the headstone, many people gave bows. Drove down to the levee, but it twas dry Sadness soon did not endeth, nor did fade. The good ol’ boys drinking cider and rye Seem’d like ev’ryone was living in shade Singing “This will be the day that I die!” Oh, “yes this will be the day that I die.” David Pedro
Statue of Loyalty There she stands tall and straight Standing as if I’m the welcoming gate So much drama in the air my head’s going to explode It’s hard to make people happy with what they have showed Passing the warrior statue so tall she says, “Without nice words we will all fall” The girls are stronger than Greek goddesses at work While the boys are just giving us smirks Walking past girls talking behind each others backs Learning loyalty, looking for good friends Searching for friends who are always going to be there for them Friends who will be there during rough times Being sad about people who you thought you trusted were being unfaithful Loyal friends are always the ones you want Smiling at all the friends who appreciate you Not fighting over pointless things and getting along with each other Caring about others feelings other than yours

Overall your friends should always be there Loyalty is a person’s most important trait “Not being loyal will get you no friends in life” Said the statue in great emotion We see a girl walking by going to Ms. Bouchard's office “I wonder what she’s doing” said the statue The girl starts saying “We should make a statue of loyalty” “What’s a statue of Loyalty?” Ms.B said Loyalty is a good thing to have Statue of Liberty is important to the world Therefore a statue of Loyalty should be put in the school To show girls all have each others’ loyalty and trust Alexis Melo
Light in the Darkness
As dark as the night, It’s cold coals that won’t be used When it seems there is no light in sight, A single torch can still be fused. With memories from night and day, Some sad and some happy, It will not be to your dismay, And the light will dance in your eyes so you can see. A man and girl stand together in woe, Looking at the light so they might try, To see beyond this darkness that they sow, And to be happy when the time is nigh. With the loss of their closest friend, Their happy tears are of the end to his suffer. With this they realise it is not the end, And the man can hold hands with the girl by his side; his daughter. Though little and naive, Her joy can bring her father’s back. With happiness, a blanket she will weave. And it will protect him until he is back on track. The small protect the large, The young protect the old, To happiness the path does targe, And everyone can be bold. The light is there, and brighter than before. Through this tough time, a family stayed strong. The man’s heart can dance once more. A bond that was built will last very long. Through the darkness all can shine right through, And now the tears are but a few. Madison Silva

Red Team News:
History with Mr. Durand –We have been working through Latin America since starting Term 4. We covered some of the major land and water features before getting into the history. Students have since created Facebook profiles for countries using research skills in class. We'll continue with European Conquest and Colonization and Independence over the next few weeks. Students will have map quizzes on May 3 (Central America, Caribbean) and May 11(South America). English with Ms Thivierge – English has been caught up in a whirlwind of PARCC for the past couple of weeks! We're taking a 'brain break' today, and we're back to it for our last two days next week -‐ but the end is almost near! :) After PARCC testing is over, we're diving right back into poetry. Looking forward, The Giver isn't far away, either! Where does the school year go? :) Science with Mrs. Metcalf -‐ Students have been learning about ecology in science class! We kicked off our unit by students uploading photos of ecosystems in their neighborhoods! We saw how turkeys, geese, and skunk cabbage are all biotic parts of ecosystems in Seekonk. Students also have made a terrestrial ecosystem in our classroom. So far, we have worms, centipedes, and a turtle! Next week we will learn about some of the abiotic parts of our environment when we review the water cycle and introduce the carbon cycle. This is a great time of year for 6th graders to learn how all things in our environment are interconnected! Math with Mrs. Handfield – Statistics, statistics, statistics!!! We are using the AL East Baseball Home Attendance numbers to reviewed mean, median, mode and range. We then took those same numbers and we found the relative attendance The students are also learning about Quartiles and Box-‐and-‐Whisker plots with the AL East attendance data too! We will cover a few more “quick” topics before PARCC and then get back to statistics. The last topic we will tackle this year is solving algebraic equations…we are in the home stretch!
