Parent Glossary

BULLYING: If you have a concern that your child is being bullied, call 503-230-1258. CHROMEBOOK: All students are required to have their school-issued Chromebook (laptop). Students are required to charge the Chromebook every night and come to school with it every day. COOPERATIVE EDUCATION (CO-OP): If a second semester junior or a senior meets the following requirements: C's or better in academic courses and an attendance rate of 95%, s/he is eligible for a paid workplace experience that occurs during vocational time and is supported by an adult. Please note: Cycle A is yellow and Cycle B is blue on the school calendar. DUAL ENROLLMENT: Qualified students are eligible to take courses at the college level while still enrolled as high school students. ELL: English Language Learner EXTERNSHIPS: These are non-paid work experiences set up with local businesses usually in the student's junior year. Students have an unpaid workplace experience under adult guidance during their vocational time.

JOB SHADOWING: A job shadow is a work-based experience that allows a student to spend time observing an employee's daily work activities and be able to talk to an adult on the job. JOHN AND ABIGAIL ADAMS SCHOLARSHIPS: The John and Abigail Adams Scholarship provides a tuition waiver for an undergraduate education for up to eight semesters at a Massachusetts state college or university. These scholarships are earned by scoring advanced on either the English, Math, or Science (Biology, Chemistry, Introductory Physics, or Technology/Engineering) MCAS exams. Students must also score proficient on the two other MCAS exams and have combined scores from the three exams that place them in the top 25 percent of students in their graduating class. MY ACCESS: This is a writing application that is used in all classrooms to help students with writing skills.

ONLINE CLASSROOM: Many teachers have an online classroom environment that connects daily in class activities to an online platform like Google classroom. Please check each syllabus to get your login information.

(P)SAT: Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is used by many colleges as part of their entrance requirements. During their junior year (11th grade), students must register if they wish to take the SAT exam in May. PSAT is the practice exam. This can be taken in October of their junior year. SCHOLARSHIPS: These are grants that are given to students to help defray the expenses of post-secondary education like tuition and books. The Guidance Department helps students and parents find scholarships for which students might be eligible. During their sophomore, junior, and senior years, qualified students may apply for toolships. These are scholarships that are used specifically for buying the tools that they will need in the practice of their profession. SchoolBrains: Southeastern uses SchoolBrains as its student records system. All grades will be posted on SchoolBrains for students and parents to see. You will also be able to communicate with your child’s teachers through this site. Login credentials will be emailed to you. For assistance please contact the Guidance Department. SCHOOL DAY: To access the School Day Calendar, please visit www.sersd.org

STUDY ISLAND: This program is used as a tool to help strengthen skills in English, Mathematics, Science, and History. VIRTUAL HIGH SCHOOL: Students who would like to increase their academic courses or take unique courses that may not be offered in person during the school day, may apply to take a VHS course. Please visit www.bit.ly/sersdVHS to see the course catalog and contact 508-230-1210 for more information.
