Page 14: PARENT NIGHT Fall 2010 Understanding Components of High School Success

Treat semesters like the end of the year Semester average determines whether or

not you pass the class and receive credit - .5 credit per semester class

Semester average is on your permanent record

This is the grade that the colleges, employers, etc. will see…

Semester Averaging – average of both semesters to determine final credit- (failing grade will still show on transcript)

Page 15: PARENT NIGHT Fall 2010 Understanding Components of High School Success

1st 6 weeks grade: 752nd 6 weeks grade: 703rd 6 weeks grade: 70 (75+70+70)/3 = 72Average: 72 x .80 = 57.6Semester Exam 55 x .20 = 11

Add together to get semester average57.6 + 11.0 = 68.6 Sem. Ave = 69

This would not be “bumped up” to a 70 – a 69 is an F.

• Shows comparison to other students based on GPA

• Difficult to change Example: Graduating Class of 2011 – 425

Top 10% - 1 – 42 - Top 20% - 1 – 84

Generally recommended that students apply to 3 – 5 colleges.

Select a “dream” (reach) school that may be a stretch.

Select at least one ( safe) “sure thing”. Select 2 – 3 schools in between. A college should fit the student academically,

personally, and socially. Be realistic!Ideally, have all applications completed by Thanksgiving

Page 28: PARENT NIGHT Fall 2010 Understanding Components of High School Success

Early Decision – A binding commitment to attend the college if you are accepted.

Early Action/Notification – Simply applying early so you will receive acceptance notification early – no commitment to attend.

Rolling Admission – Apply and usually receive an admission decision within four to six weeks
