• CNUSD Transition to CCSS Video
What are the Common Core State Standards?
1. Common Core Standards are a coherent progression of learning expectations in English language arts and mathematics.
2. Designed to prepare K–12 students for college and career success. 3. They are consistent from state to state in their coverage and level of rigor.
How were the standards developed?• Partnership of the Council of Chief State School Officers and the
National Governors Association
• Input from parents, teachers, school administrators, and experts from across the country
• Developed in the following areas:
• English language arts and literacy in history/social studies, science, and technical subjects• Standards for mathematical practice and mathematical content
• Were adopted by California State Department of education on August 2nd, 2010.
The Common Core State Standards:• Are aligned with college and work expectations;
• Are clear, understandable, and consistent;
• Are rigorous in both content and application of knowledge through high-order skills;
• Are built on strengths and lessons of current state standards;
• Are informed by other top-performing countries, so that all students are prepared to succeed in a global economy and society.
How will the standards be assessed?
• SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC)
• Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC)
• State of California has chosen SBAC to provide yearly state assessments
• Assessments will be in grades 3rd – 8th & 11th Grade
English Language Arts ‘Shifts’
Shift 1:Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction
Shift 2:Reading, writing , and speaking grounded in
evidence from text, both literary and informational
Shift 3:Regular practice with complex text and its academic
language
Mathematical ‘Shifts’• Shift 1: Focus
From coverage to mastery Focus and deepen instruction
• Shift 2: Coherence Think across grades, and link to major topics within grades
• Shift 3: RigorPursue conceptual understanding, procedural
skill and fluency, and application with equal intensity
Standards for Mathematical Practice
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.3. Construct viable arguments and critique the
reasoning of others.4. Model with mathematics.5. Use appropriate tools strategically.6. Attend to precision.7. Look for and make use of structure.8. Look for and express regularity in repeated
reasoning.
