Middle School Play Opens Tomorrow!

Shakespeare’s most beloved comedy - shows are Friday and Saturday, May 18 & 19, at 7:00 p.m. in the Island School Theatre. Playing the role of Flute will be special guest stars, Eric Devlin (Friday) and Ernie Blachowiak (Saturday).

Road Closure Today plus Puhi Intersection DetoursYou might have noticed that the Kilohana/Kaua‘i Community College access road to Island School has been blocked by a large crane from 6:00 a.m. and will continue to be blocked until 5:00 p.m. Vehicles coming in or out of Island School via this route will be turned around. Vehicles must utilize the Puhi intersection for the day. And - starting last Tuesday, the northbound lane of Puhi Road, approaching Kaua‘i Community College, will be closed continuously between the Puhi Park entrance and Kaumuali‘i Highway for road construction for approximately four weeks. Puhi Road traffic in the northbound direction will be detoured on Kaneka Street and Nuhou St. as an alternate route to Kaumuali‘i Highway.

The southbound lane of Puhi Road will remain open as normal. Please allocate

additional drive time to arrive on campus. If you have any questions, please call the school office at 246-0233.

Junior Lifeguard ProgramRegistration for this program is free and designed to teach ocean safety and lifesaving skills to children 13-17 years old. There are five island wide sites scheduled for this summer. NHS Installation TuesdayNew members of Island School’s chapter of the National Honor Society will be installed in a ceremony on Tuesday, May 22, in the Frear Center. Members and their guests should arrive between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. Guest speaker will be Island School Board member Mary L. Capwell, who is the chair of Academic Affairs and Activities. Prior to retirement, Ms Capwell was the superintendent of the Greenwich, CT, Public Schools.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT – Congratulations to 5th grader, Ellianna Ramirez, who won first place in the 2nd Annual Kaua‘i Family Magazine Keiki Cover Search. She won a huge stuffed

bear, a monetary award and will be featured on the cover of Kaua‘i Family Magazine. Raina Silver auditioned for and was given a role in Legoland’s

summer promotional event. She will spend the summer in Southern California, performing as Stephanie Legoland.

ART – Savannah Hubbard, kin-dergarten, was awarded first place in Division 1 in the Lions’ Club “Sight is Beau-tiful” poster contest (See photo at right with teacher, Diane Ferry. Kaili Kaui, also in kinder-garten, won 2nd place.

STAFF ACHIEVEMENT – A painting by Island School art teacher Penny Nichols will be on display this summer in an exhibit on O‘ahu. The Schaefer Portrait Challenge 2012 opens next week, May 23, at the Honolulu Museum of Art, located downtown at First Hawaiian Center. It will be there through September 14th. The Schaefer is a triennial exhibition that encourages Hawai‘i artists to chronicle the changing face of their community

through two- and three-dimensional portraiture. It features the work of selected artists, along with their portrait subjects, all of whom live and work in the state and have a significant connection to the artist. The exhibit, which is traveling to O‘ahu from the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, showcases the work of fifty Hawai‘i artists. This year marks the fourth triennial event, with previous Portrait Challenges held in 2003, 2006 and 2009. This is the second time Penny’s art has been chosen for this prestigious exhibit.

ENGLISH – Ms. Flagg’s ninth grade students are preparing public service announcements on topics of their choice. Working in small groups, they are researching, writing, and producing short videos to inform and encourage their audiences. Topics include Water Safety, Healthy Choices, and Texting and Driving.

SIXTH GRADE – The girls Homeroom class went to the Hanchett Ranch in Moloa‘a last week with their teachers Judy Byce, Sierra Hampton-Eng and Jackie Mierta. They were taught the names of each piece of tack used in horseback riding, how to read the signs a horse gives to know if it is angry, alert and curious, or just ‘chillin’. They learned each horse has a different personality. One girl said she learned that each horse has a ‘bubble’ around it where people and other horses may not be welcome. Each girl was assigned a horse and taught the proper way to mount and dismount, get a horse to move or stop, turn, and back-up. Some

girls were experienced horse riders, some were not. Some were completely comfortable around horses, some were scared, at least at the beginning. By the end of the day, every one of the girls went on an hour and a half trail ride on the beautiful ranch lands. They walked, trotted, and cantered their horses up and down hills, observing and learning and enjoying themselves and each other. (See photo below) The guides were fabulous, very knowledgeable and patient. The entire day was declared a resounding success! The sixth grade boys are at the ranch today.

SENIOR UPDATE – Dylan Morrison-Fogel was selected for a Centennial Scholarship toward his tuition at University of Hawai‘i at Mänoa. This scholarship recognizes his outstanding academic achievements.

HAWAIIAN STUDIES - Kumu Kauka took the fourth grade students to visit the Menehune Fish Pond. She told them stories, led them in singing the school anthem, and pointed out Mt. Ha‘upu.

Parents - try and remember what it was like for you when you could see summer vacation around the next bend. But now, it’s your children’s education and your tuition dollars at stake here. Be proactive. Here are some tips:

Attendance is Important: Be wary of statements like, “We’re not doing anything in class this week,” or “It’s OK of I miss school today.” Teachers do not let up simply because the end is near. In fact, teachers tend to ramp up their expectations. Let your children know that they should plan on coming to school up to the last day.

Keep Your Standards High: Stay on top of homework and grades and expect the same quality you expected all year.

Make School a Hot Topic: Keep up the conversation about school at home. Ask open ended questions like, “What deadlines are coming up at school?” and “How did your presentation go today?”

Stay Informed: Read the Parent Connection and check RenWeb to keep up with final exam dates and due dates for special projects.

Make it a Strong FinishThe Learning Continues!Let’s face it, the end is in sight. Spring Break has come and gone, as have May Day and many of our overnight field trips. Even trimester 2 midterms are over. So what’s left?

Fourteen full days of instruction!That’s 25% of the trimester.
