NATIONAL YOUNG READER’S AND CAREER AWARENESS WEEK – Nov. 9-13, 2015

Ms. Takehara and the Student Council will be coordinating community members as celebrity readers in our classrooms. This activity

promotes the joy of reading because it develops thinking skills, vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension. In our school’s efforts to

promote positive behaviors and College and Career Readiness, we are asking our community and celebrity readers to also share about

their careers and important skills in school that helped them reach their goals and become successful.

PROMOTING A SAFE AND HEALTHY CAMPUS

MORNING DROP-OFF AND AFTERNOON PICK-UP

Mornings are very important to students (and adults). A good morning will set the tone for learning the entire day. Please help your

child(ren) have a good day by signing all forms and having them get their belongings/backpacks in order before they enter your car to

leave for school. Please do not park in the bus loading/unloading zone. It is reserved for bus transportation and arranged

circumstances. There have been reports of cars reversing from that area into the crosswalk where our staff is helping children get

from one side to the other. It is very dangerous. Finally, for those parents or guardians loading & unloading at the “island” area,

please pull forward so that you child can enter/exit your vehicle in a safe area beyond the new planter section. Your cooperation will

be greatly appreciated!

STUDENTS ON CAMPUS BEFORE & AFTERSCHOOL

We are concerned about the safety of students being dropped off at school as early as 6:00 a.m. and also those students remaining on

campus well after 2:30p/1:30p on a daily basis. There are reports of homeless people that roam on campus during the early mornings,

and it is dangerous for your child(ren) if they are here by themselves as there is no adult supervision in the morning. In addition,

please make arrangements for your child(ren) afterschool as there is also no adult supervision on campus. Kama’aina Kids continue

to accept applications for their A-Plus afterschool program.

Also, a concerned citizen in our community reported last week that a girl wearing a Salt Lake uniform shirt walked up to the car by the

district park and said, “hi!” The person was alarmed that our students would walk up to a stranger’s car. He feared what would

happen if the stranger was a pedophile. Administration addressed the staff and students about stranger danger. Please talk to your

child about not approaching strangers, walking in groups, and being aware of their surroundings.

STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS - November

Oct. 19-23 was “Make a Difference” Week across the nation. Our committee created their own “Make a Difference”

week consisting of: Oct. 19 - “Active Day” (encouraging exercise during recess)

Oct. 20 - “Make a New Friend Day” (encourage students to meet new people)

Oct. 21 – the students did a short skit during lunch period to teach people not to bully others

Oct. 22 – “Wall of Gratitude” - Students put up post-its of what they are thankful for. This will continue until before

Thanksgiving.

Oct. 23 – “Social Day” (socialize with your new friend and make everyone feel included)

On Oct. 28, a committee did Halloween activities with the special education pre-school and FSC students.

On Oct. 30, the Student Council helped to host the “Dress as a Book Character Parade”. Students dressed as book

characters and paraded down the mall during recess to Halloween music. This event was to kick-off the National Young

Readers Week on Nov. 9, 10, and 13, and to encourage students to read for enjoyment.

From Nov. 4-18, classes will be collecting canned goods to donate to the Hawaii Food Bank. The class that brings in the

most canned goods will receive a Jamba Juice party at the end of the year.

STATE OF HAWAII BOARD OF EDUCATION

PARENT/FAMILY INVOLVEMENT

POLICY 2403The Board of Education recognizes that a child's education is a responsibility shared by the school and the family during the entire period the child spends in school. To support the goal of the Department of Education (Department) to educate all students effectively, schools and parents must work as knowledgeable partners. Although parents are diverse in culture, language, and needs, they share the schools’ commitment in the educational success of their children. The Department and its schools, in collaboration with parents, shall establish programs and practices that enhance parent involvement and reflect the specific needs of students and their families. To this end, the Board of Education supports the Department in the development, implementation, and regular evaluation of parent involvement programs in each school. The implementation will involve parents at all grade levels in a variety of roles, including input in decision-making processes and practices. The parent involvement program will be comprehensive and coordinated in nature. It will include, but not be limited to, the following components of successful parent involvement programs: ● Communication between home and school is regular, two-way, and meaningful. ● Responsible parenting is promoted and supported.

● Parents play an integral role in assisting student learning, including successful achievement of the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards. ● Parents are welcome in the school, and their support and assistance are sought. ● Parents are partners in the decisions that affect children and families. ● Community resources are made available to strengthen school programs, family practices, and student learning. The Department shall implement administrative guidelines that support professional development opportunities for staff members to enhance understanding of effective parent involvement strategies. The Department recognizes the importance of administrative leadership in setting expectations and creating a climate conducive to parental participation. Engaging parents is essential to improved student achievement and to realize the Vision of a Public School Graduate. Approved: 05/03/01; Revised: 09/18/03

Support our PTA’s Box Tops for Education Program

Clipping is easy! Clip Box Tops from your favorite products

and turn them in to your teacher. Each Box Top is worth 10 . Last year, we raised over $2,000. If we all work together,

we’ll reach our goal of $2,500 in no time.

HOUR OF CODE

Dear Parents, We live in a world surrounded by technology. And we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly hinge on understanding how technology works. But only a tiny fraction of us are learning computer science, and less students are studying it than a decade ago. That’s why our entire school is joining in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 4-15 IRA Classes). More than 100 million students worldwide have already tried an Hour of Code. Our Hour of Code is a statement that Salt Lake Elementary School is ready to teach these foundational 21st century skills. To continue bringing programming activities to your students, we want to make our Hour of Code event huge. I encourage you to volunteer, reach out to local media, share the news on social media channels and consider hosting additional Hour of Code events in the community. This is a chance to change the future of education. See http://hourofcode.com/us for details, and help spread the word.

THANK YOU TO THE GIRL SCOUTS FOR CLEANING AND STENCILING OUR STORM DRAINS

On Saturday, October 24, Girl Scout troups volunteered their time to service our school and community

by sweeping and clearing our storm drains all over campus so that the rain can easily drain into the

ocean. Daisies Troup #100 swept leaves and grass covering a few storm drains and the Brownies Troup

#286 stenciled drains saying “No Dumping, Leads to Ocean.” Thank you to our librarian, Ms. Chudko

for creating the storm drains and our own staff members, Ms. Sisco and Ms. Leilani, for being Girl

Scouts advisors.

MCTEACHER’S NIGHT

Thank you for supporting our McTeacher’s Night at the Salt Lake Elementary McDonald’s restaurant on Thursday, October 29, from

5-8 p.m. A percentage of sales during that time was returned to our school to benefit our service group leadership and appreciation

field trips and also help subsidize expenses for the 6th

Grade Promotion Ceremony in the spring. We were able to raise $802 in walk-

in donations and percentage of sales! Mahalo!
