INTRODUCTION

Pioneer Valley Ballet is a local non-profit that fosters an appreciation of dance on a regional

level for local audiences, gives dedicated young dancers the opportunity to perform at a pre-

professional level and provides all children the opportunity to experience the joys of movement

and music through the study of classical ballet.

Under the artistic direction of Thomas Vacanti and Maryanne Kodzis, dancers learn both

contemporary and classical choreography throughout the year in classes and on-stage. PVB’s

training program creates determined, strong, and supple dancers who possess poise, confidence,

and self-respect. Whether or not children aspire to professional dance careers, the exercises and

teaching styles used in ballet classes create strong, healthy students.

Pioneer Valley Ballet accepts students of any race, color, sexual orientation, ancestry, religious

affiliation, national and ethnic origin.

Student Arrival/Departure Policy All children under the age of 12 must be accompanied to and from the PVB lobby by an adult

when arriving for and departing from class. Please arrive promptly to ensure that your dancer is

ready for class and please pick up your dancer on time. PVB cannot offer supervision between

the Eastworks front door and the PVB studios.

Students should not arrive more than 30 minutes prior to their classes as we cannot guarantee

there will be a staff member onsite or that the PVB doors will be open.

There is not a staff member at the desk for the closing of the last class at night. There is not a

person to answer the phone after the Program Director leaves. Please be prompt in picking up

your child. If parents/guardians are more than 15 minutes late on more than one occasion, there

will be a fee of $10 dollars for every 15 minutes of wait time. We have to pay for staff to cover

the studio until all students are picked up.

Students should have covering clothing entering and exiting PVB. Eastworks is a public place of

business. Our students should be covered with tops and bottoms when entering and exiting the

building. Please make sure that dancers have clothing for walks to locations in the building.

Student Etiquette Pioneer Valley Ballet has a high standard of professional behavior. Proper etiquette for a dancer

will not only enhance their study at PVB, but will carry over into their academic life and

professional future. Students are expected to be prepared for class, focused and dedicated in the

studio, and productive with their time before and after class. Students should not be engaged in

social conversations during class. BEHAVIOR IN REHEARSAL AND PERFORMANCE - Dancers must be good representatives of

PVB and positive role models for other dancers. It is the dancer’s responsibility to show respect for PVB

staff and volunteers, theatre personnel, and fellow performers in class, rehearsal and performance.

Respect is also shown to the PVB studio facilities and the Academy of Music theatre facilities by keeping

them clean, which includes picking up your personal items and trash. This also includes taking care of

costumes by hanging them up, not sitting in them, and not eating or drinking while in costume.

Harassment or bullying of any kind by dancers or their parents/guardians will not be tolerated and will be

grounds for removal from performances and/or classes or dismissal from PVB.

Dancers and parents will accept the Artistic Directors’ casting decisions with maturity

and professionalism.

GENERAL HEALTH AND DANCE TECHNIQUE - Dancers must maintain good dance and pointe

technique with at least three classes per week (two with pointe work in addition to pointe class). It is the

dancer’s responsibility to maintain good general health and stamina by eating well and getting proper rest.

Poor technique and/or health may result in fewer performances or dismissal from the production. If there

is suspected physical or mental health concerns of the dancer or self-harm by the dancer is suspected,

Artistic Directors may request that a dancer take a break from training at PVB, and/or a removal

from the production or performance or dismissal from PVB.

Zero Tolerance for Use of Drugs or Alcohol: PVB has a zero tolerance for its dancers using or

in possession of alcohol or drugs illegal under federal or state law, including marijuana and the

misuse of prescription drugs, while the dancers are at PVB studios or performance venues.

Reasonable suspicion or confirmed use or possession of alcohol or drugs illegal under federal or

state law, or of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs illegal federal or state law, while

the dancers are at PVB studios or performance venues, including but not limited to The Academy

of Music, will result in IMMEDIATE dismissal from the studio/venue AND production, and all

future PVB classes, rehearsals and productions.

permitted. We kindly ask that you do not talk during observation so that full attention is given to

our students and teachers. Teachers will open the doors when families may enter.

Evaluation and Placement Students are evaluated in the final month of the training program each year by faculty and the

Artistic Directors. All class placement recommendations and decisions are final. Written

placement letters will be sent to each student following the Year End Performance.

New student placement is determined first by age and prior experience. A free trial/placement

class in which the student is observed by the Head of School or her designated instructor is

utilized to finalize placement.

Private Lessons Private lessons are recommended for students who are looking to advance their skills and

maintain their training, especially during the summer months or other breaks in the training

program. To schedule a private lesson, schedule them online or contact the studio with preferred

time and teacher. PVB will make arrangements with the preferred trainer. Private lessons range

in scale for the instructor per hour and payments must be made to Pioneer Valley Ballet. You

may schedule them through the registration site or the front desk.

of attendance and payments.

After using this online registration, parents will receive an email from PVB. The system only

allows enrollment for classes in the child’s age range. Only age appropriate classes will be

shown.

Students may register for each class separately each season. We have four seasons: Fall, Winter,

Spring and Summer. Fall, Winter and Spring seasons run 10/11 weeks and the Summer will run

for 6 weeks. Students can change their days and classes every session as their schedules may

change. To enroll in the next session, the student’s tuition balance will have to be zero.

All registrations will happen online, but know that there is a human who can override or change

items that have been incorrect.

Note: Fall Season opens in July. The Winter season opens in October. The Spring season opens

in February. The Summer season opens in May.

Waivers To enroll in class parents and students will need to sign the waiver forms which are online. They

are located in the dancer’s account under the menu tabs at the top.

Changes to the casting and production process: Dancers in Advanced, Intermediate III and Intermediate II will no longer pay audition fees.

PVB dancers will be able to audition separately from the Community audition days.

The Spring production will now be open only to PVB students Preballet and above. There will

not be an open Community audition for the Spring ballet. This is an opportunity for our PVB

dancers to perform.

Q. If I am in productions, when will rehearsals take place?

A. We have moved most rehearsals for productions off of Saturdays. There are times during

weeknights, Fridays and a small group on Saturdays.

Q. Will I have to take a certain number of classes each session?

A. Yes, to be in good standing as a dancer at a certain level, you should take all classes that are

offered in a week. Advancement in class levels are by age, and fulfillment of previous training

levels. You may choose not to take all of the classes. Repertory does not count as a technique

class. Intermediate II and Intermediate III pointe class will require at least 2 ballet technique

classes per week for enrollment.

Q. Advanced, Intermediate II and III only: If I don’t sign up for Repertory class will I be able

to be in the production?

A. No. You will need to sign up for the Repertory class to be in the production.

Q. Advanced only: If I don’t sign up for Variations class will I be cast in a divertissement part in

the performance?

A. No. You will learn that type of choreography in Variations class. Casting decisions will be

made about divertissement by November. If you do not take Variations, you will not have a

chance to be cast in that role. There is no guarantee that you will be cast in a particular role

based on taking this class. All roles are cast by the Artistic Directors.

SUPPORTING PIONEER VALLEY BALLET

Your donation supports:

● our community ballets which place children alongside professionals on stage and offer

all performers with opulent sets and costumes, stunning (and often adorable)

choreography, and share a ballet story with an entire community

● our classical training, influenced by the styles of Balanchine, which is rigorous, detailed,

and focuses on the whole dancer

● hundreds of local school children visiting the Academy of Music and watching ballet

(often for the very first time) and learning about the art form

● over 120 at-risk community members who receive free tickets to a performance, a joy

they may not otherwise experience
