Introduction To highlight the effect of hum an interference with thc environ men t by way of developm ental activities in the fields of bo th agri culture and indus- tries and the consequent urbanisation and the ever increasing popul at i on, the stat ions co nsi dered in part I are paired here in such a way that one station is affected more th an the other with which it is com' pared. A mere presentation of c omp arative da ta itself is reveali ng. M an i et al. (1973) mad e suc h studies in a limited way. To keep the discussions brief, only two blocks 1970-71 and 1985-86, commo n to all stations are considered and the analysis pre- sented here. 1.1. Comparison between Jodhpur a nd Delhi Jodhpur (26.3°N) and Delhi (28.6°N) are both located in the same subtro pical latitudinal belt and subjected to the heavy injection of du st load of the subtropics carried over from the deserts in the west. Both are affected by the winter rains caused by the eastward moving extra trop ical di sturban ces that cause large fluctuarions in the irradi an ces dep end ing upon their relative strength of activities at diff erent times. Jodhp ur is affected more by the deserts due to its proximi ty, and has serveral small scale industrial units but mostl y located east of the radiation station. Delh i has more industrial units and a higher level of urbanisation and is. therefore. subjected to greater environmenta l stresses. (139) 1.l.1. Pig. I gives the co mpa rative values of the different radiometric quantities studied, viz., H g . Hd S. B and En Globa l radiant exposure If , at Delhi was consistently lower than that at Jodhpur by at least 6 per cent and it was lower than 10 per cent or more during the post-monsoon period . During th is period Delhi 1970-71. measurements were being made from the Lodhi Complex . 1985-86 pic ture is different. Delhi records slightly high er irradian ce levels th an Jodh pu r. H, at Delhi is substantially lower only in 'December to February period. This may, perhaps. be attributed to the dry condi tions that prevailed over Jodhpur during 1985-86 (26 per cen t less rain fall - Table 1 of part I). Though H g was recording in different ways dur- ing the two periods, diffu se rad iant exposure Hd is always more at Delhi. It was abou t 28 per cent more th an Jodh pur du ring 1970-71 and ab out 13 per cen t during 1985-86. The build up of the dus t lo ad over the period, Janu ary to April has been rather slow du rin g 1970-71 as compared to 1985-86. The percen- tage difference is un if onnl y higher in all the mo nths d uri ng 1985-86 as com pared \0 1970-72. 1.1.2. Th e direct solar irradia nce S was consisten- tly much lower at Delh i du ring 1970-71 It is lo)"er in 1985·86 but the orde r of difference is less. On an average, Delh i had re mai ned consistently lower by about 7 per cent durin gboth the periods. the drop in S in the individual stations du rin g the period were also almost by the sam e percentage, 17-18 per

I. Introduction
