thE rodEf shalom –

PursuIng PEacE In JudaIsm

The rodef shalom is an ancient Jewish rabbinic model of a peacemaker, pursuing peace

between individuals, families and

communities. Throughout Jewish

history there were people known in

their communities as rodfei shalom

(pursuers of peace) or mitavchei

shalom (peace-brokers).

This course challenges and inspires

participants into being rodfei shalom,

students of Aaron: loving peace, loving

people and pursuing peace between

individuals, families, communities,

nations and religions. We will attempt

to do this through the study of Torah,

conflict resolution theories, and online

discussions.

sample course units: • Aaron Rodef Shalom –

the ideal Jewish peacemaker

• The Rodef Shalom who turns

enemies into friends

• The Rodef Shalom who facilitates

communication

The Abrahamic family, as described in sacred texts, is perhaps the most influential and conflicted family in the history of humanity.

This course attempts to ‘textually reconcile’ some of these deep family conflicts through the integration of text study of the various interpretations of these stories, together with the application of reconciliation theories. We will explore the possible ramifications of this reconciliation for our own family conflicts as well as for conflicts around the world today.

sample course units:• The competing victim narratives

of Ishmael and Isaac• The competing chosenness

narratives of Jacob and Esau• The intractable identity conflict

of the Israelites and the Amalekites

Reconciling the Abrahamic Family
