PILOT PROJECT AUTHORIZING DOGS

*Individuals who fail to comply with any of the rules stated above may be required to leave the area and/or issued a statement of offence, where appropriate.

A pilot project is in its third year authorizing the presence of dogs in five national parks, including Parc national de Frontenac (Saint-Daniel sector). Sépaq is conducting this project subject to conditions in order to measure how visits and the natural environment might be affected.

Main rules*

• Dogs must remain in the places where they are authorized at all times.• Dogs must be kept on a leash no more than three (3) metres in length and under

surveillance at all times.• The person in charge of the dog must pick up the animal’s excrement without delay

and dispose of it in a hygienic manner.• Barking or howling dogs as well as dogs affecting the tranquility and safety of other

visitors are not allowed.

THE GREAT BLUE HERON, THE PARC’S EMBLEMAnimal emblem of the Parc National de Frontenac, the great blue heron can be seen in all sectors of the territory. Its wingspan exceeding 2 m, its majestic look and blue plumage make it easy to distinguish from other fishing birds. Lucky visitors will get a glimpse of this great bird hovering above their heads. The abundance and diversity of the park’s water bodies make it a preferred location for bird watching.

LA TOURBIÈREThe peatland in the St-Daniel sector is home to several species of carnivorous plants and orchids. A wooded pathway allows observation of the flora typical to peatlands. Discovery panels line the trail where two observation towers are also accessible.

LAC À LA BARBUE Lac à la Barbue is the perfect place to learn and practise the basics of canoeing. Let yourself glide gently on the water through a garden of water lily varieties. Take a moment to stop and watch for waterfowl and white-tailed deer.

LE LITTORAL Le Littoral offers a 16 km (round trip) bike ride along the shores of the majestic Grand Lac Saint-François. The sandy shores of Pointe-aux-Pins and Baie des Sables are great spots to enjoy a picnic.

LA BAIE SAUVAGE La Baie Sauvage is a favourite for extended canoe or kayak excursions. Keep an eye out! In addition to the common loon, whose song will enchant you, perhaps you will observe the bald eagle perched atop a large pine tree.

You’ll discover beds of aquatic plants in full bloom and an extraordinary diversity of birdlife. AN EVENING WITH THE MUSKRATSAccompanied by a naturalist park warden, end your day with an intimate encounter with the Baie aux Rats Musqués’ wildlife. The tranquility of a summer evening and the richness of this habitat are the perfect combination for a memorable end-of-day moment.

GUIDED HIKE AT LA TOURBIÈRE Discover a fascinating place where the sight of carnivorous plants and wide-open spaces mixes-in with the rich perfumes and enchanting breeze so typical to peatland. Retrace the history of this environment created by the cold climate of ancient times, and get acquainted with surprising flora and wildlife!

CANOE-CAMPING FOR ALL You have the soul of an explorer? Learn the basics of canoe-camping at Baie Sauvage, Lac à la Barbue or at the Lac des Îles. Excursions ranging from 15 minutes to 2 and a half hours are required to reach one of the 29 sites spread across 7 sectors. One of the sectors is dedicated to organized groups.

AIM FOR THE TOP Combine canoeing and an 8 km hike. From the Lac des Îles boat launch, navigate your canoe to access # 12. From there, take the Massif de Winslow trail until you reach the top of a hill, where you will enjoy a breathtaking view. During your return journey, take a break on the sandy shore of Lac Thor.

STAND ON WATER! Discover Baie Sauvage and Baie aux Rats Musqués from a different perspective with paddle surfing. Of Hawaiian origin, this activity combines surfing and kayaking. Standing with a paddle in hand, you can test your balance. Learning is fast and easy.

Rentals : $ 17.25 / 1 hour

Also available for rent : single or double recreational kayak, canoe and pedal boat.

FISHING INITIATIONWishing you could recount your very own fishing tales to family and friends? Several wade fishing sites are available to let you experience this activity safely and equipments are available. If you don’t have the necessary equipment, we can provide it for you in order to learn the basics. Animation activities are offered, find out.

Fees are applicable to the boat rental. Fishing license required. Child : free loan of fishing equipment if accompanied by an adult.

FISHING, A FAMILY STORY Grand Lac Saint-François offers unique opportunities for visitors to learn about family fishing. To ensure the quality of the fish populations and their habitats, the park actively collaborates with the Grand Lac Saint-François’ Fishermen’s Association and the Department of Forestry, Wildlife and Parks to implement direct actions. These combined efforts ensure that you can discover the ins and outs of this activity always full of surprises!

THE BALD EAGLES ARE BACK! Good news! Bald Eagles at Lac à la Barbue have returned since 2017. In order to protect future eaglets during the nesting season, access to the lake is restricted until June 14. Subsequently, a navigation restriction area is also identified by buoys, to limit disturbances near the nesting site. We ask for your collaboration so that you can get a chance to see these new eaglets evolve over the seasons.

To preserve our natural riches, you are not allowed to remove any natural elements (animals, plants, dead wood, rocks, etc.). Please also keep to established hiking trails to avoid trampling flora.

Domestic animals are not accepted in Québec’s national parks. However, guide dogs and service dogs are admitted.

We ask you to carry out all your garbage.

Animals find all they need to eat in nature. Feeding wildlife can be very damaging. Keep food or garbage out of reach of animals.

During your visit to a national park, you must always carry your entry fee receipt or your annual entry card.

WATER EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK With its 51 km2, the Grand Lac Saint-François is the third-largest lake south of the St. Lawrence River. Although it spreads far and large, the park occupies nearly 55% of its shores, and the two largest bays are within the park. Whether by canoe, pedal boat or kayak, discover this majestic body of water, maybe you will experience memorable encounters and understand the importance of preserving this unique environment!
