Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 17: The 'Festival of Lights' commonly known as Diwali was celebrat- ed with great enthusiasm by various educational institu- tions across Jammu region. To celebrate the occasion, a Rangoli and Flower arrange- ment competition was organ- ized in Dogra Degree College. The BBA/BA/BCom students of the College participated in the competitions and displayed their skills. A total of seven teams (one from each class) participated in the competition and three teams were awarded prizes for their designs. GD Goenka Public School, Jammu organized a special assembly on the eve of Diwali. Students participated in vari- ous competitions like Rangoli making and Class decoration. The quadrangle, where the cul- tural extravagance was held, came to life with festivities that captured the essence of Diwali. Every class displayed their talent and came with a lot of innovative ideas which were visible in the designs made by them. The celebration of the Festival of Lights came alive at KC International School when the whole school wore a fes- tive look with Diyas and lanterns adorning the corri- dors. The students talked about the significance of the festival. The students showcased the spirit of Diwali through a mes- merising dance performance. The Pre-Primary students per- formed a puppet show to cele- brate the joyous occasion. An Inter-house Rangoli and Diya arrangement competition was also organized. Diwali was also celebrated with great pomp and show at Stephens International Public School Jammu. The colourful Rangolis made by students added the perfect setting to the festivity. Wisdom house stood 1st in the Rangoli competition. The programme started with a skit depicting the important phases of Rama's life. Students also talked about the signifi- cance of the festival. Rich Harvest School, Bari Brahamana celebrated Diwali with great pomp and show in the school premises. The cele- bration started with the light- ing of earthen lamps amongst chanting of mantras. The main attraction of the programme was the Rangoli competition. The students put up their artis- tic acumen on display. Diwali was also celebrated by students and staff members of Dogra Higher Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, Jammu. Students decorated the school beautifully with flowers and buntings. An inter-house Rangoli and Candle decoration competition was held in the school premises and prizes were awarded to first three winners. Sweets were distrib- uted among the students by the school management. British International School celebrated Diwali with great enthusiasm and fervor. The function was presided over by chief guest, Rafeequal Hassan, DIG Jammu, Kathua and Samba Range. The program- mer started with the traditional lighting of lamp. The students performed various cultural items including a symbolic dance with diyas, group song on Diwali in English and a skit on "Ramayana". The Festival of Lights was celebrated with true spirit by Jammu Sanskriti School, Jammu by lighting the clay lamps. Special assembly began with songs and dance perform- ances which left the entire school ensorcelled. This was followed by a meaningful skit enacted by Sanskritians of the school highlighting the mes- sage of Diwali and invoking God's blessings. The Festival of Lights came alive at APS Kaluchak. The whole school wore a festive look with earthen lamps and lanterns adorning the corridors in bright colours. A special assembly was organized to mark this crucial occasion. The skits on mythological charac- ters enacted by the students added the perfect setting to the festivity. The celebration cul- minated with a gripping group song by the little bloomers in the special morning assembly. RM Public School celebrat- ed Diwali with fervor. The school was decorated with diyas and colourful lights. Teachers of the school present- ed two dance performances. Students of RM College of Education also presented a song performance. An inter- house competition of decorat- ing diyas, candles and thalis was also organized on the occasion. Diwali was celebrated with great enthusiasm in all the three branches of May Fair School in Jammu. The colour- ful Rangolis made by the stu- dents added the perfect setting to the festivity. An inter-house Rangoli making, diya decora- tion and card making competi- tion was organized in different wings. The students were sen- sitized on the ill-effects of the crackers and guidelines on bursting them safely were shared with them. The Festival of Lights was celebrated in a unique way in Kartar Public School, Barnoti. The programme began with a meaningful prayer highlighting the message of Diwali and invoking God's blessings. The students then went back to their respective classes and enjoyed themselves by singing songs, tuning themselves to dance and shared sweets among themselves. Various inter-house competitions were organized on this occasion. Sunrise Public School cele- brated Diwali with religious fervor in school premises. The students made colourful rango- lis with the help of teachers to decorate their classes. All the students were presented a Notepad as well as a pencil by the school management. Ragersville Preschool, Bhavani Nagar, Janipur (Jammu) celebrated Diwali with great enthusiasm. The function commenced with lighting of the lamp by School Director, Sandeepa Gupta and Rajesh Tuli, which was fol- lowed by Sarasvati Vandana. Tastefully decorated school campus added charm to the atmosphere as the little ones dressed up as different charac- ters made beautiful rangolis with the help of teachers. Diwali was celebrated with great joy by Mount Litera Zee School, Tarore (Samba). The School was decorated by the teachers with Diyas and lights. A special morning Assembly was conducted and various fun activities like Musical chair, Find your Partner, Treasure hunt, Passing the ball, etc were organized in which the stu- dents enjoyed to their heart's content. Tiny toddlers of Madhuvan Kids Playway School & Daycare celebrated Diwali with great fervor and enthusi- asm. The school was decorated with beautiful Rangolis, house boards and diyas. The celebra- tion started with the lightening of diyas and candles by Principal Amrit Choudhary. A small theatrical act 'Ram- leela' was also presented by little champs. Dewan Devi Playway School celebrated Diwali in the premises of the school. Various cultural programmes were organized and all the tod- dlers actively participated in these programmes to enjoy the festival. The Festival of Lights was celebrated with great joy at Tiger Pre-Primary School, Domana. A special assembly was organized wherein Principal of the school spoke about the significance of cele- brating Diwali. The skits on mythological characters enact- ed by the students added the perfect setting to the festivity. Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 17: Aakash- deep Singh brought laurels to the State of Jammu and Kashmir by winning first prize in his category during 2nd DCA Open FIDE Rated Chess Tournament in New Delhi. The event was organized by Delhi Chess Association under the banner of All India Chess Federation at New Delhi. A total of 481 players from across the country participated in the tournament which included 2 Grandmasters, 8 International Masters and 419 International rated chess players. In tough fought battles with a better tie break score, Aakashdeep Singh emerged as winner while Trinabh Bhatnagar of Delhi bagged second prize in the same category. Aakashdeep has been listed as the fastest growing chess player in 2016 by Asian Chess federation, when he secured 227 points in a single Grand Masters Tournament held in New Delhi. The cash prizes and trophies were distributed by Anurag Garg, Joint Director Central Bureau of Investigations and Bharat Singh, Secretary, All India Chess Federation in the presence of AK Verma, Secretary Delhi Chess Association and Grandmaster Mircea Parligras. Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 17: Paras Cricket Club Faridabad and Sharda Cricket Club Gurugram emerged winners in the sixth edi- tion of Kashmiri Pandit Cricket League (KPL-VI), organised by Kashyap Kashmir Sabha, Gurgaon in association and sup- port from likeminded associations and Sabha’s of national capital region. The event also saw participa- tion of Vomedh Rangmanch, which super hit play “Ek Aur Birbal” for the audience of Delhi- NCR. The play written by Rakesh Roshan Bhat and was directed by Rohit Bhat. The matches for the Sixth edi- tion of Kashmiri Pandit Cricket League commenced on October 10 and finals for both men and women editions were held at Baliwayas, Gurgaon-Faridabad Road, Gurugram. Twenty teams from different parts of the country participated which included teams from Kashmir valley, Jammu, Punjab, Chandigarh, Ghaziabad, Noida, Delhi, Faridabad, Gurgaon and Pune. Some of the players even came from Bangalore, Hyderabad, Jaipur and different parts of the country to be part of this sporting extravaganza. The star attraction of the final day was presence of famous Indian Cricketer Murli Kartik. Besides the Cultural troupe “Vomedh Rangmanch” from Jammu, prominent singers of community including Dalip Langoo mesmerized the crowd with his voice. Local artist popu- larly known as nightingale of Gurugram Purnima Raina and Gaash Tarakh winner Ritika Raina also performed and enthralled the audience. Young artist from Jaipur namely Krishna also performed along with the other artists. Jai Krishan Bali from Jammu was at his best with solo performance of Ladishah. At the end famous comedian of Anil Kaul alias Anil Chingari created the magic with his teasing mimicry in Kashmiri and Hindi. In the men final, Paras Cricket Club, Faridabad defeated Chinar Cricket Club by just 3 runs, whereas in women final, Sharda Cricket Club Gurugram emerged winner by defeating Kheer Bhawani team of Delhi by 9 wick- ets. Excelsior Sports Correspondent BHADERWAH, Oct 17: Government Girls Higher Secondary School (GGHSS) Bhaderwah won the last ball thriller by hitting a massive six to clinch the title trophy of the first ever Girls Cricket Tournament organized by Bhaderwah Police under Civic Action Programme (CAP) at Government Higher Secondary School Boys, here. The high octane final match played between Atkhar Public School (APS) and Government Girls Higher Secondary School (GGHSS) Bhaderwah kept hun- dreds of spectators on toes as with every ball, the momentum kept on changing. After winning the toss, APS elected to bat and posted an impressive 83 runs in stipulated 10 overs. GGHSS started the chase nervously as they could not cope up with the tight bowling and extraordinary fielding of APS. In the last over, it looked that APS will win the match easily as GGHSS needed 15 runs, in the first 2 balls, 2 fours were hit fol- lowed by 2 dot balls. On the sec- ond last ball, a single was taken making it more difficult for Priya Bhagat as her team needed 6 runs on the last ball, but she hit a mas- sive six to win the match and cov- eted trophy for her team. Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 17: RS Pura Game Changer registered win over NCC Kathua by a huge margin of 8 wickets and sailed into the next round of the ongoing Ball Busters Cricket Tournament, being organ- ized by Aditi Welfare India Charitable Trust (AWICT), at Parade ground, here today. Batting first, NCC Kathua scored 104 runs in 20 overs. Avinash made 29 runs, while Sanam Singh and Aquib made 17 runs each. From RS Pura Game Changer, Kamal scalped 4 wickets, while Anil took 2 wickets. In reply, RS Pura Game Changer chased the target and won the match by 8 wickets. Anil made 10 runs, while Aryan Dogra chipped in 24 runs. From NCC Kathua, Avinash took 1 wicket. Today, in the third match of the Championship, Jammu Rising Stars defeated Jammu Challengers Eleven by 30 runs . Batting first, Jammu Rising Stars scored 170 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 30 overs. Abhinav was the main scorer who made 33 runs, Musaif also made valuable 30 runs and Thathagya con- tributed with 23 runs to the total. A total of 481 players fromacross the country participated inthe tournament which included 2Grandmasters, 8 InternationalMasters and 419 Internationalrated chess players.

better tie break score, AakashdeepSingh emerged as winner whileTrinabh Bhatnagar of Delhibagged second prize in the samecategory. Aakashdeep has beenlisted as the fastest growing chessplayer in 2016 by Asian Chessfederation, when he secured 227points in a single Grand MastersTournament held in New Delhi.

The high octane final matchplayed between Atkhar PublicSchool (APS) and GovernmentGirls Higher Secondary School(GGHSS) Bhaderwah kept hun-dreds of spectators on toes as withevery ball, the momentum kepton changing.

After winning the toss, APSelected to bat and posted animpressive 83 runs in stipulated10 overs. GGHSS started thechase nervously as they could notcope up with the tight bowlingand extraordinary fielding ofAPS.

In the last over, it looked thatAPS will win the match easily asGGHSS needed 15 runs, in thefirst 2 balls, 2 fours were hit fol-lowed by 2 dot balls.
