Speculative Masonic Symbolism of the Square and Compasses In speculative Freemasonry, this emblematic symbol is used in Masonic ritual. The Compasses exemplify our wisdom of conduct, the strength to "circumscribe our desires and keep our passions within due bounds". When these 2 Masonic tools are placed together with God (the Creator) as our central focal point (just as King Solomon built God's Temple, first - and then built his house around it), peace and harmony is the result. Morality: In speculative Freemasonry, the square is a symbol of morality. Official Masonic Usage: 1. It is one of the 3 Great Lights (the Square, the Compass and the Holy Book). 2. It is the working tool of a Fellowcraft. 3. It is the official emblem of the Master of the lodge. In each of its above roles, it inculcates (teaches) the repeated lesson of morality, truthfulness and honesty. Common Usage: The Square is so universally accepted that it has found its way into colloquial language with which we communicate on a daily basis. We have all heard the sayings: "Getting a square deal; Are you on the square? Squaring off". While the specific date with which the Masonic square became an official Masonic symbol is not known, it was one of the primary tools which an operative mason used in his craft. Greetings Brethren, We had a great March and April. Both Gary Longmuir and Bryn Farrimond gave their EA proficiencies and had their 2nd degrees. Gary Longmuir on April 19th and Bryan Farrimond April 26th. Please join me in congratulating both of these fine Brothers!

In other lodge news, Brother Daniel James Lewis has accepted the Chair position for the Fundraising Commit-tee. Brethren, we need your help, advice and participation for this great endeavor. Money doesn’t grow on trees as they say and we are in need. Fundraising is the best way to supplement small expenses that eat away at the budget. Our budget is in place to make sure we can meet the daily operations of our lodge which covers our usual expenses and activities. However, there are so many more things we can be doing in our community if we had some extra cash lying around, and of course the best way to get this extra money is fundraising. Brother Daniel’s wife Toni has also agreed to help with this endeavor. So - if you are interested in joining the fundraising committee please contact Brother Daniel ASAP.

On The Level

My Brethren, I now wish to address a matter of great concern. When I first came to our Lodge one of the reasons I joined this Lodge in particular was the constant showing of kindness and respect for every member of this Lodge. It was overwhelming - the brotherly love that I witnessed every week. At our stated meeting our lodge room was full and every Brother in that room was treated with equal kindness and respect. In the past three years, however, I am noticing a disturbing trend. I’ve seen a great number of non-masonic behavior amongst my Brothers. Backstabbing, temper tantrums, negative outbursts, non-participation, lack of initiative, constant bickering and complaining without offered solutions and the recent trend of our Worshipful Masters disappearing after their term has ended (I’m not saying all but Brethren you know what I’m talking about)! I became a Mason to be taught how to become better than these behaviors. I became a Mason to become a better man. As Masons we are taught to subdue our passions and not let them get the best of us. There are so many good men in our lodge but good men stand alone, great men stand together. Brethren it is not difficult to be great men, all you have to do is put aside your pride, subdue your passions, forget and forgive the behaviors of the past and come together as great men on the level. I will leave you now with a little masonic poem that I believe makes my point. (Please see page 3 top).

Masonically, Brother Brian

STARS OF PARADISE OES #56 Virginia Valente - reporting

The year is quickly galloping to a nish, and we thank those who have blessed us with good leadership. Our thanks to Brother Bill and Sister Ann Lau. We are also for their diligence in recruiting new members. We have initiated several of our Jobie’s and some of the parents too. How welcome they are! We have other petitions pending. PLEASE call Jean Patterson to make or cancel reservations for Star Night Out in May to aviod location confusion this month! Her phone number is 602-300-5539. STARS OF PARADISE invites all friends, members and their friends and families to attend the “Queen for a Day” Tea Party to be held on May 13th from 1-3 p.m. in the PVST Lodge. There will be Auctions, door prizes and lots of fun and merriment. Patti Herrington is in charge so you can believe is a Party that you won’t want to miss and all for the low sum of $15.00. A dozen of Stars of Paradise members joined those from Mesa Starlight for a day at the Wild Horse Pass Casino, and some made money and some did not but it was a most enjoyable afternoon of fraternal friendship and of course the Chapters added a little to our coers. Ellie Aldrin, our Sickness & Distress Chairman has sent cards to: Dan and Norma Schwartz, Shari Bender (Our Editor of the Trestleboard ), June Richardson, Rosemary Bennet, who has been so helpful when we needed her, and of course our WP who is recovering from his annual Kidney Procedure. Ellie’s phone number is 602-996-8197 to report any one needing cards or calls of encouragement.

9 Master Masons, faithful, never late; One didn't like the Master, then there were 8. 8 Master Masons, on their way to heaven; One joined too many clubs, then there were 7.

7 Master Masons, life dealt some hard licks; One grew discouraged, then there were 6.6 Master Masons, all very much alive; One lost his interest, then there were 5.

5 Master Masons, wishing there were more; Got into a great dispute, then there were 4. 4 Master Masons, busy as could be; One didn't like the programs, then there were 3.

3 Master Masons, was one of them you? One grew tired of all the work, then there were 2. 2 Master Masons with so much to be done; One said ‘What's the use’, then there was 1.

1Master Mason, found a brother true! Brought him to the Lodge, then there were 2.2 Master Masons didn't find work a bore; Each brought another, then there were 4.

4 Master Masons saved their Lodge's fate; By showing others kindness, then there were 8.8 Master Masons, loving their Lodges bright sheen; Talked so much about it, they soon counted 16.

16 Master Masons, to their obligations true; Were pleased when their number went to 32.So we can't put our troubles at the Lodge's door; It's our fault for harming the Lodge we adore.

Don't fuss about the programs or the Master in the East; Keep your obligation by serving even the very least.

From the restrooms to the Lodge room to the Dining Room - PLEASE be careful with sharp objects, liquids, hot items and any food & beverage. Luke has been work-ing really hard to maintain our property but he can not do it alone! The floors & table cloths are the latest areas of concern. Also - if you leave ANYTHING in a box or on the floor of the restroom it will be discarded after a week, including that brown box on the floor of the ladies room. Thank you for your help.

Trowel-Talk #74 by Brother Tom Lyle, PVST29 How Does Our Second Working Tool (Our C.G.) Relate To Socrates Statement That He Is

"Different From Men In General"?

My brothers, awareness and discernment are the roots of consciousness. The serious Mason asks the Great Architect for guidance in using his C.G. in order to smooth his stone. Which roughness is most prudent to work on next, in order to become a beer man? In our following quote, Socrates targeted a roughness common to most men -- that we presume to know that which we do not know. Right about now, many my be now thinking, "Just what in the universe does that mean?" Let's give Socrates a chance to clarify it for us as follows.

"For the fear of death is indeed the pretense of wisdom, and not real wisdom, being a pretense of knowing the unknown; and no one knows whether death, which men in their fear apprehend to be the greatest evil, may not be the greatest good. Is not this ignorance of a disgraceful sort, the ignorance which is the conceit that a man knows what he does not know? And in this respect only I believe myself to differ from men in general, and may perhaps claim to be wiser than they are: that whereas I know but lile of the world below, I do not suppose that I know: but I do know that injusce and disobedience to a beer, whether God or man, is evil and dishonorable, and I will never fear or avoid a possible good rather than a certain evil." The Apology; Plato's Dialogues, p47 translated by B. Jowe

Surely for the non-spiritual (those who do not believe in a Supreme Being, and the connuity of consciousness), where the grave is the final desnaon, a fear of death is a dominant concern which greatly affects adude and conduct. But the Mason, who believes in a Supreme Being, understands that his service to Humanity will connue in the Supreme Lodge above, and so his fear of, death is seriously diminished. To the discerning esoteric thinker, who understands that each of us have had more lifemes than there are stones in the Great Wall of China, the fear of death may be next to non existant. Certainly the fear of death commands much personal energy in most men that could be beer used to increase their level of service to family and Mankind.

My brothers, in addion to the pretense of knowing what we do not know, as well as the fear of death, there is another roughness which Socrates addressed, while he was on trial for his life in ancient Athens. This roughness is one which many moderns are adamant about, and consider a rose in the garden of personality rather than a weed. It is the concept of taking personal independence to an extreme and thus easily forgeng our duty of obedience to God and His Hierarchy of Goodness. It is not so obvious a rough spot as the fear of death, yet it awaits the discerning use of our C.G.

Is it not the mark of the Great ones that even in mes of very serious adversity, they connue to show the way to become beer men? A statement comes to mind here that warms the heart of Master Masons-- "Let there be Light." (Fiat Lux!)

The Long & the Short Of It

"We should take care not to make the intellect our god; it has, of course, powerful muscles, but no personality." (Albert Einstein) We’ve just celebrated Einstein's 138th Birthday; What does that mean?

If you think of people that rely on only their intellect throughout their life, how do they get their point across with the impression that they actually believe what they are saying? How can you convince anyone what you say is right if only by quoting text and memorizing facts? Would you blindly follow a heartless leader?

Life is full of many decisions. Work, family, ethical, moral and even recreational decisions. Then there are the seemingly simple decisions. How do you get where you really & truly want to end up.

Example: You need to get to the Castle in time for the King's speech at 7pm. There are 2 paths to take - the first being the direct one and the other that is a lot longer. You assume you can save time by taking the shorter route so you leave home at 6:45 and head out for the Castle. You arrive at 5-minutes to 7 only to find you are on the back side of the Castle and there is no way to get in! Now you have to walk all around the entire building to gain entry and are late - arriving after the speech has started. You made great time but you cannot get in. That is the short-long route.

On the other hand - if you would have taken your time - found out the details - you would have gone the other way - which although it would have taken you longer to arrive - you would have arrived at the front door right on time! That is the long-short route! At times it is the better journey.

In today's hectic life we all seem to be looking for a quick fix. For the shortest distance between 2 points. A way to simplify and make it easier to get through the task at hand. Only be where we need to be - when we must be there - but be there fast & get out as soon as we can.

Another example - An EA at Lodge is having his 2nd Degree. You're not in the Line of Officers; you aren't participating in the Degree. So maybe you don't even need to go to Lodge that night. Why not stay home and get other things done? It would be faster for you - make your life easier. You can accomplish your things while that Brother accomplishes his.

Well then - the question needs to be asked - Why are you a Mason? Is it only to get what you desire from it? Only what you feel is necessary? Where is the Brotherhood and heart in all of that? If you live on intellect, logic and only what you think is important to you, you will miss out on what you can get out of life.

The heart of life; the heart of the Lodge.

Masonry is not just about you - it is about Brotherhood. Part of Brotherhood is showing up for your Brothers, on their special occasions - or just when they may need you. You can not anticipate another's needs and they can't know yours until you let it be known. Lodge is the meeting place that brings you together on Wednesday nights; That is when your Brothers are supposed to be able to count on you for support, an ear to listen, a friend and a Brother to care - just by being there. Some-times Brothers choose not to talk about their troubles - they just come to Lodge to get away from them & be around people they feel a bond with.

YOU are the HEART of the Lodge. The books and files and titles are not. It is what is inside of each of you that you can offer to Brothers new & old. BUT - If you don't show up, not only are you missing out on the fellowship and brotherhood, you are depriving the other Brothers of it as well.

What do you want to get out of the journey? Just the quick facts? A 3rd Degree so you can say "I am a Mason" and move on to your next task? Or the do you want to know your Brothers; Do you want to be a part of the Lodge or just someone that passed through? What was the purpose of the journey?

There is no room in Masonry for apathy. It defeats the main principals of the Craft: Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth.
