WALTER SCOTT ASKS …
Danny DeVito The 67-year-old star of It’s Always Sunny in Phil-adelphia also voices The Lorax (in theaters now).
How similar are you and the Lorax? He has a lot of my bombastic attitudes, my gesticulations. But I’m prob-ably a little less friendly, a little gruffer, than he is.You also voiced the character for some foreign-language
versions. That was like climbing Mount Everest. We did German, Italian, Spanish, and Russian. It was a trip! You and your wife, Rhea Perlman, have been together
for decades. What’s your secret? After the initial salad days, you get to be more than lovers and mates. You get to be friends. We go through ups and downs, but if there is more there than what you normally think of as romance, you can stick it out with each other forever. You and Michael Douglas were once roommates in
New York. What was that like? He was a babe magnet, so I would conveniently go on adventures whenever he needed the place. It wasn’t a very big space. Will there ever be a Twins 2? Arnold [Schwarzenegger] and I speak about it. It’s time we did another movie together. I think everybody would enjoy it.
Letters to Walter Scott can be sent to P.O. Box 5001,
Grand Central Station, New York, N.Y. 10163-5001
Is Ellen DeGeneres
really related to Kate
Middleton? —Kim, Edgewater, N.J.
The talk show host and the duchess are indeed
distantly related—they’re 14th cousins, twice
removed, according to the New England Historic Genealogical Society.
P Joey Fatone
Q: What is *NSYNC’s
Joey Fatone doing
these days? —Martin,
Syracuse, N.Y.
A: When he’s not at home in Florida with his wife and two daughters, he travels as host of the new food show My Fam-ily Recipe Rocks (Saturdays, 9 p.m. ET on the Live Well Network). “I have kind of an iron stomach,” says Fatone, 35, though he adds that the dishes he’s tasted so far have been mercifully yummy. As for music, he’d love to return to Broadway. To learn what marital advice this longtime family man has for former bandmate Justin Timberlake, go to Parade.com/fatone.
The same was true of everyone shown wearing a U.S. military uniform. “They wanted to make a movie that would authentically honor their community, brotherhood, and family sacrifi ce,” Waugh adds, noting that the men were heavily involved in planning the fi lm’s action sequences.

I SHOULDN’T
say this, but I bought my plane
before I had a [pilot’s] license,” Enrique Iglesias says conspiratorially. “I was like that kid the Barefoot Bandit. He didn’t know how to fl y, but be-cause he loved planes, he did it anyway.” The singer’s bravado has served him well. After helping to launch the Latin music boom with sultry ballads, Iglesias, 36, is now one of dance music’s chief provo-cateurs, with hits like “Tonight (I’m Lovin’ You).” The high-fl ying star, whose latest album is Euphoria, tells Mary Margaret what keeps him grounded.
PARADE You spent much
of last year touring the
world. Did you take any
keepsakes with you?
I have a picture of my two dogs, Lucas and Grammy. Grammy passed away in 2010. That dog was like a human—he would get sad when I packed my bags. It was like losing one of my best friends.
A lot of your songs are
about love. Why?
It’s the thing we all have in common. Ninety percent of music tackles that sub-ject because everyone—no matter how old, what reli-gion, or what nationality—knows those feelings.
Speaking of love, you
introduced longtime girl-
and not be married. What makes a difference is that you’re a good parent, period.
What did you learn about
fame from observing your
father Julio’s career?
I remember there were these two guys who worked with him who would never even watch his show, but afterward
The hear hrob opens up about love, fame, and how fans can make an impression
friend Anna Kourn ikova as
your wife at a concert in
Russia last year. What was
that about?
It was just meant to be sweet in the moment. I honestly didn’t mean to confuse people. I thought it’d be easier for the audience to un-derstand than if I said “my girl.”
So no wedding bells soon?
I’ve never really thought marriage would make a difference. Maybe it’s because I come from divorced parents, but I don’t think you love
someone more because of a piece of paper. And nowadays, it’s not taboo to have kids
they were at his dress-ing room saying,
“Man, that’s the best show I’ve ever seen you do.” In showbiz, it’s easy to be sur-rounded by people
who tell you every-thing is great, and as a
little kid, I developed a sixth sense about those people. It gave me a tremendous psychological advantage.
You grew up in Miami and
still live there. What do
you love about it?
People always think of the partying and the clubs on South Beach, but it has a tranquil side, too. It’s a city where you can truly enjoy the water, get on your boat and just go fi shing. And the water’s not cold!
How do you spend Sun-
days when you’re home?
I sit on the couch and watch TV. 60 Minutes is my favorite show. It’s kinda weird because I go from that to American Idol to Real Time With Bill Maher.
You like to go to the
movies on Mondays and
Tuesdays. Why is that?
It’s the best time: There are no lines, and you’re not sitting next to some-one who’s snoring.
What’s the craziest thing
a fan has done to get your
attention?
Sometimes you’ll see a shirt fl y off. That will get not only my attention, but the whole band’s.

Ask MarilynBy Marilyn vos Savant
When you wrote about why bicyclists should ride with traffi c (and not against it), you neglected to mention the main reason: decreased impact speed in an accident. For example, if you’re riding a bike at 15 mph and you’re struck head-on by a car travel-ing at 35 mph, you’re exposed to a 50 mph (35 plus 15) impact. But if you’re struck from behind, you get a 20 mph (35 minus 15) impact.—Ned Radich, Fresno, Calif.
Many readers wrote to express the same idea, but it’s not quite correct. First, the main reason that all types of vehicles (including bikes) travel in the same direction is not decreased impact speed in an accident. It’s the avoidance of accidents in the fi rst place. That’s a basic rule for any kind of traffi c.
Then there’s this physics error: In a head-on collision, the sum of the vehicles’ speeds does not equal the force of the impact. This is a common mis-conception, sometimes propa-gated by news reports. Say two identical cars are traveling at 50 mph and they collide head-on. Each car sustains a 50 mph impact, not a 100 mph impact.
A cyclist will fare much worse than a motorist in nearly all collisions, of course, but the fi rst one you describe, a head-on collision between a 15 mph bike and a 35 mph car, will not deliver a 50 mph impact to either party.

(SPECIAL) - Hydrogen peroxide is
trusted by every hospital and emergency
room in the country for its remarkable
ability to kill deadly germs like E. coli.
In fact, it has attracted so much interest
from doctors that over 6000 articles
about it have appeared in scientific
publications around the world.

peroxide enables your immune system
to function properly and fight infection
and disease. Doctors have found it
can shrink tumors and treat allergies,
Alzheimer’s, asthma, clogged arteries,
diabetes, digestive problems and
migraine headaches.
Smart consumers nationwide are
also discovering there are hundreds of
health cures and home remedy uses for
hydrogen peroxide. A new book called
The Magic of Hydrogen Peroxide is now
available that tells you exactly how to
use hydrogen peroxide by itself... and
mixed with simple everyday kitchen
items... to make liniments, rubs, lotions,
soaks and tonics that treat a wide variety
of ailments.
It contains tested and proven health
cures that do everything from relieving
chronic pain to making age spots go
away. You’ll be amazed to see how a

Besides killing E. coli, hydrogen
peroxide also destroys botulism, salmo-
nella and other harmful organisms. It
works by making viruses and bacteria
self-destruct on the cellular level. Amaz-
ingly, for something so powerful, hydrogen
peroxide is safe. That’s because after it
makes germs self-destruct, hydrogen
peroxide breaks down into harmless
water.

WHY DO WE GET GOOSE BUMPS, GO WRINKLY IN THE BATHTUB, AND SPROUT HAIR IN
UNLIKELY PLACES? WE ASKED EXPERTS TO EXPLAIN OUR MOST CURIOUS QUIRKS.
Why do I wake up in the morning with gunk in my eyes? That crusty stu is actually just dried tears. Your tear glands are constantly watering your eyes to ush out irritants. “While you’re awake, the act of blink-ing wipes tears away before they can build up,” says Jason Edward Karo, M.D., an ophthal-mologist in Charlo e, N.C. “But when your eyes are closed at night, the dried tears accu-mulate inside the corners.”
2 Why do I get goose
bumps during scary
movies? Goose bumps are produced by piloerection, a refl ex that contracts the muscles around the base of each hair follicle, causing the hair to stand up (and small bumps to emerge), says Zoe Draelos, M.D., a con-sulting professor of derma-tology at Duke University. Back when humans were hairier, piloerection had two benefi ts: It helped keep us warm by trapping heated

Why does it seem as if mosquitoes nd me more delectable than other people? It doesn’t just seem that way. The bloodsuckers are drawn to a tasty dinner by a variety of signals, includ-ing heat, carbon dioxide, movement, and the smell of skin secretions like lactic acid. One study even found that mosquitoes tend to prefer people who have recently downed a beer. No one knows what precise combination mosquitoes nd the most irresistible, but if you seem to be their meal of choice, wear repellent and pass on the brew.

air close to the skin, and in scary situations, it made us look bigger and more threatening (like a spooked cat puffi ng up its fur). Watching a horror fl ick in an air-conditioned theater provides the perfect setup for piloerection: You’re not only frightened, you’re also probably freezing.
3 Why do my fi ngers
and toes wrinkle in
the water?
Here’s the leading hypo-thesis: The top layer of
your skin absorbs more water than the layers beneath, increasing its surface area, says Richard Scher, M.D., professor emeritus of dermatology at Columbia University. Since the newly baggy skin is still attached to the non-bloated layers, it bunches up, causing a prunelike effect. Fingers and toes are especially prone because of their thicker shell of dead keratin, an absorbent protein on the skin’s outer layer.
5 Why can’t I stop
biting my nails? Casual nibbling may have evolved as a type of self-grooming, like when an animal bites or scrapes down its claws, says Monnica Williams, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology at the University of Louisville. It may also be a soothing ritual for when you’re stressed, similar to suck-ing your thumb. But some people take this habit too far, gnawing away until their nail beds are painful or bleeding. If you’re overchomping, says Williams, seek the help of a doctor or cognitive behavioral therapist to help you break the habit.
6Why do men get
more hair in some
places and less in others
as they get older?
The “George Costanza effect” is a common sign of aging. It’s caused by dihydrotestosterone (or DHT), a sex hormone to which some men are genetically predisposed to become sensitive, accord-ing to Spencer Kobren, founder of the American Hair Loss Association. When that sensitivity develops, the hormone often causes the hair fol-licles on the head to shrink and follicles elsewhere, like on the back or in the ears or nasal passages, to become stimulated.
7What are hiccups,
exactly, and how can I
stop them?
A hiccup is an involuntary contraction of the dia-phragm and the muscles between your ribs. Any
short-term hiccupping is called a “bout” and is usually the result of over-eating or drinking carbon-ated beverages (other causes include sudden excitement, stress, or too much alcohol). Traditional
remedies for bouts include holding your breath, sipping cold water, gargling, swal-lowing a teaspoon of dry sugar, gently pressing on your eyeballs, or leaning forward to compress your chest. If your hiccups last more than 48 hours, see a physician. An underlying medical problem, such as gastritis (infl ammation of the stomach lining), might be causing them.
Why does my nose run when it’s cold outside?Your nose helps per-form a kind of climate control by heating and humidifying the air that you inhale so that it be er matches the moist, warm conditions inside your lungs. Glands in your nose produce secretions that add moisture, and blood vessels in your nose dilate to warm the incoming air, acting like miniature radiators. When you breathe super-frigid air, those phenomena are ampli ed, leading to runniness, says Andrew P. Lane, M.D., director of the Johns Hopkins Sinus Center. There are two reasons why: Cold air tends to be drier, which causes the glands in your nose to produce more secretions. Second, when you exhale warm, moist air out into the cold world, some of the moisture condenses into droplets of water, which collect at the tip of the nose and add to the drip.

tugging the lobes, which straightens the ear canal and allows water to wash away excess wax.
14 Why do fi nger-
nails grow faster
than toenails?
We know that fi ngernails grow about three times as fast as toenails and that the fi ngernails of your dominant hand grow more rapidly than those of your nondominant hand, says Nia Terezakis, M.D., clinical professor of dermatology at Tulane School of Medicine. What we don’t know for sure is why. The most accepted theory is that since you use your fi ngers more than your toes (and your strong hand more than your weak one), the faster nail growth might result from the body’s attempt to repair whichever parts are undergoing the most “trauma” (from activi-ties like pecking out texts or digging for car keys).
15 Why do people
ache more as
they get older?
The older you are, the more likely you are to develop arthritis. The Arthritis Foundation estimates that 27 million Americans suf-fer from the most common form, osteoarthritis, which is caused when cartilage—the connective tissue that cushions our joints— begins to break down. Without this protective padding, bones can rub together, causing stiffness and pain. Older adults are also more likely to develop a condition called bursitis, in which the bursa—the fl uid-fi lled sacs that reduce friction where tendons slide over bones—become infl amed. The good news? Increasing your activity level may make the symptoms milder (and help you feel better).

16Why do I cry when I chop onions?According to Harold McGee, author of On
Food and Cooking: The Science
and Lore of the Kitchen, these
tears are caused by the release of a chemical called a lacrimator (which sounds like a supervillain but is actually from the Latin verb “to cry”). When you slice into an onion, the chemical is expelled into the air, and once it reaches your eyes and nose, it breaks down into irritating com-pounds that a ack the nerve endings there, says McGee. Your eyes produce tears (and, likewise, your nose may run) to rinse away these compounds. To reduce the e ect, try prechilling onions in ice water for 30 to 60 minutes; this will slow the enzymatic reaction that releases the lacrimator, and that means fewer of the o end-ing molecules circulating in the air and fewer tears.

Why is it impossible to tickle yourself? The answer lies within the brain’s cerebellum, which helps to monitor body movement. Scientists from University College in Lon-don found that the cerebellum can predict how self-administered touches will feel and alerts other tickle-sensitive areas of the brain. Since a truly successful tickle requires an element of surprise, this early-warning system makes self-tickling an exercise in futility.
9 What causes bad
breath? Typically, the culprit is your tongue—or, to be more specifi c, the white fi lm that builds up on your tongue while you sleep, says Ken Yaegaki, Ph.D., D.D.S., head of the Nippon University Department of Oral Health. Yaegaki estimates that 60 percent of halitosis cases can be attributed to bad-smelling sulfuric com-pounds produced by this layer of microorganisms
and dead cells. The solution: Try regularly brushing your tongue, back to front, using a soft-bristled toothbrush.
10Why do I lose so
much hair when
I shampoo?
Most people lose 100 to 150 strands each day; the longer the strands, the more dramatic their appearance when you fi nd them on your brush or in the drain. (And if you don’t brush or wash your hair every day,
the loss will seem greater on days when you do.) If you think you’re losing an excessive amount—you’re no longer able to style your hair as you normally would, for example—then see your doctor. You’re most likely developing run-of-the-mill pattern baldness (which can affect both men and women), but there could be an underlying medical condition, like lupus or a thyroid disorder, at play.
12 Why do I huff and
puff climbing
stairs when I can easily
run a mile on a treadmill?
As anyone who’s used a rolling suitcase knows, it’s a lot easier to pull a heavy object along a fl at surface than it is to pick one up. When you run on a tread-mill, you’re barely lifting any of your body weight up and down. Walking up a typical 45-degree staircase, on the other hand, requires you to move 70 percent of your body weight against gravity, says Joseph Signorile, Ph.D., professor of exercise physiology at the University of Miami and author of Bending the Aging Curve.
13 What is earwax?
And why do we
need it?
Earwax is made up of moisturizing oils, infection-fi ghting enzymes, and dead skin, says Jordan S. Josephson, M.D., an ear, nose, and throat specialist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. And though the substance may be unsavory, he argues that most of the time, we should let our ear-wax be. “When you try to remove it using Q-tips or your fi nger, the result is like packing a musket: You keep pushing the earwax in deeper, where it gets stuck and hardens,” says Josephson. Instead, clean your ears while showering by gently

A ONLY 5 TO 10
percent of people who suffer cardiac arrest outside a hospital survive. But that number could be doubled if more bystanders per-formed CPR—and today’s “hands-only” approach requires no mouth-to-mouth resuscitation or even formal training, says Ben Bobrow, M.D., associate professor of emergency medi-
cine at the University of Arizona. Bystand-ers take action in only about a third of cardiac arrest cases, so the American Heart Association has launched an initiative to teach 911 dispatchers how to coach people through the process. A dispatcher should

ask whether the person is conscious and whether he or she is breathing normally. If the answer to both is no, the dispatcher can help a bystander start CPR, often within 60 seconds.
A IF YOU SEE AN
ADULT WHO HAS
COLLAPSED:
• First check her breathing. Is she gasping or breath-ing shallowly? • If so, stack the heels of your palms on the victim’s chest (see diagram) and pump hard and fast. • Try humming the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive” as you go—if you press down on every beat, you’ll reach the ideal speed, about 100 pumps per minute.
For adults, this method is at least as effective as the old “two breaths to every 30 pumps” technique. (Children and drowning victims still benefit from mouth-to-mouth along with compressions.) —Kalee Thompson

Loose Saggy Neck Skin – Can Any Cream Cure Turkey Neck?DEAR DORRIS: I’m a woman who is 64 years young who suffers from really loose skin under my chin and on my lower neck. I hate the term, but my grandkids say I have “turkey neck” and frankly, I’ve had enough of it!
I have tried some creams designed to help tighten and firm that loose, saggy skin, but they did not work. Is there any cream out there that can truly help my loose neck skin?
Turkey Neck, Chicago, IL
DEAR TURKEY-NECK: In fact, there is a very potent cream on the market that firms, tightens and regenerates new skin cells on the neck area. It is called the Dermagist Neck Restoration Cream®. This cream contains an instant lift ingredient that tightens the skin naturally, as well as deep moisturizing ingredients to firm the skin and make it more supple. Amazingly, the Dermagist Neck Restoration Cream® also has Stem Cells taken from Malus Domesticus, a special apple from Switzerland.
These stem cells are actually unprogrammed cells that can mimic those of young skin that stays tight, firm and wrinkle free. As an alternative to the scary surgeries or face lifts that many people resort to, this cream really packs a big punch on the loose saggy skin of the neck.
The Dermagist Neck Restoration Cream® is available online at Dermagist.com or you can order or learn more by calling toll-free, 888-771-5355. Oh, I almost forgot… I was given a promo code when I placed my order that gave me 11% off. The code was “PAR3N2”. It’s worth a try to see if it still work.

My mother ran a cooking school
in our Toronto home, so my brothers and I were exposed to a lot of good food growing up. While other kids we knew were eating macaroni and cheese or hot dogs, my brothers and I were weaned on quiche and pâté.
One dish she made all the time was this tart, using whatever fruit was fresh and in season. I could always fi nd one of these tarts sitting on the kitchen counter; she also taught it to her students, who were often neighboring moms and dads.
When I was in college, I asked my mother for the recipe, and I’ve been baking it ever since. Whether made from pears, peaches, or plums, this tart has a lovely vanilla-and-fruit scent that fi lls the house as it bakes. It’s comforting, simple, and versatile. I make it because it reminds me of home.
