Pastor’s Corner . . . The rich man dressed luxuriously in purple garments and dined sumptuously, ignored the beggar Lazarus lying outside his gate, covered with sores because he was convinced that God had everything to do with it. He was made to believe that he had nothing to do with his impoverished neighbor. Because he thought he had no responsibility toward anyone except

himself, he treated him less than a human being, not even a fellow. This mentality allowed the so-called blessed and prosperous man to enjoy his riches even to the point of walking past the poor guy at his doorsteps. For him, the best life is to live well and eat well. Love of neighbor is not an option. For him, poverty is your own fault, destiny and God’s design, too. The poor are poor because God had punished them. Bad choices have corresponding consequences which the rich man believed was exactly what happened to Lazarus. Trapped by the misfortunes of life, he is left to take care of himself. An awful story, to say the least. It seems that this scenario makes us all feel bad and guilty of ourselves because of missed

opportunities and what and how we think life should be lived. For those of us who started from the bottom and climbed the ladder of success, we boldly claim that what we have is the result of hard work. We’ve been taught to love themselves as we are the sole arbiter of our lives. We learned what it

meant to be responsible citizens and gave out of our abundance. And now comes this terrible and painful story. But the central message is to show and tell us a truth that hopefully will change the way we run our lives for the better.

The rich man described as a royal figure, draped in robes and fine clothing, dined sumptuously and celebrated life, not on occasions but daily, had everything money can buy. He had everything in his capacity to do, so when Lazarus was sitting

at this gate but preferred not to. He enjoyed the comfort and the pleasures of life, by every sense of the word. What Jesus was furious about was the wrong interpretation of the scriptures and that is, the godless mentality and

lifestyle whose goal is nothing but the comfort and enjoyment of life. There’s a great chasm existing between them. The gap is too wide, complex and fixed, so that it’s impossible to bridge this chasm established by God. As you know, the deceased continue to communicate with us. They bring all sorts of messages. The after life is real. Their last words still reverberate in our hearts. We are told that Lazarus whose name means “God has helped” was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham. Following this scenario, the so-called eschatological

reversal of fortune, typical of Luke’s Gospel, unfolds. The rich man dressed luxuriously in purple garments and dined sumptuously, ignored the beggar Lazarus lying outside his gate covered with sores because he was convinced that God had everything to do with it. Lazarus end-ed up at Abraham’s side while the rich man suffers in torment in the netherworld. “May the angels lead you into paradise. May the choir of angels receive you and with Lazarus who once was poor, may you have eter-nal life. This familiar and yet complicated scenario is an ongoing- developing story in the drama of our redemption.

he dejado de hacer”.

Tal vez necesitamos evaluarnos a nosotros mismos a cerca

Amen.

World Day for Migrants & Refugees. . .Sept. 29, 2019

Pope Francis calls us to look at the migration issue from the lens of humanity, of caring for, and waling with, our brother & sisters. This is not about people’s country of origin, but their unique God-given human dignity. How can we promote their well-being, protect them from cruelty & human indifference, and assist in their integration into our community? We are grateful to the Cursillistas in our Catholic Community who, once a week, provide lunch for the refugees waiting to ask for asylum on the Mexican side of our border.

Día Mundial de los Migrantes y Refugiados. . .29 de sept. 2019

validated in the Catholic Church to which they belong, to fulfill your promise to each other, to truly be “united” to each other and to the Catholic Church for life.

Fr. Jojo invites these couples to a special wedding ceremony to gather engaged couples, couples who are contemplating the Sacrament of Marriage, and those whose civil

marriages require validation in our Catholic faith.
