    local reasoning' the (uestion also raises theoretical (uestions in the urbanism )eld%

    *da!tation and understanding of the history of a !lace and its conte+t can give acontinuation in the design of the city' following its own logic and needs with the

    means available at a given time% , -dentifying the !otential' verifying the !hysical

    !ossibilities and outlining the necessary conditions for ful)lling these !otentials ./

    that is what we e+!ect from an urban !lanner%

    -n the conte+t of the constantly growing urban !o!ulation across the globe' the

    modern urban living lies in the hands of architects and !lanners%0 Will they seek to

    accommodate them in new cities or will they )nd the answer in the current ones?

    *ccording to Morales 1.2345' we architects are still seeking to discover the mostsuitable relationshi! between roads and houses' having lost that (uality of

    alignment which had !roved so useful ever since Renaissance times% 67o' how do

    we de)ne and use it today? *nd more im!ortantly' how do we face the constant

    growing of cities?

    $aris has recently tested an interesting a!!roach% *lthough ca!able of absorbing

    most ma"or develo!ments 1from the end of industriali8ation until the beginning of

    the information area5' with the changing )nancial systems' the new $ost 9yoto

    restrictions' the old :uro!ean cities are facing new challenges' one of them being

    the fear of losing their status as im!ortant centres on the global market% ;

    the $aris everybody loves% &ut was this also the reason of severe segregation

    between the centre and its banlieues? *s Vesta Aele Eareh observes' uring the

    ,=th century the city continued to grow while !reserving its image as a glamorous

    metro!olis with a coherent :uro!ean city s!ace' so everything that did not )t into

    the Hausmannian structures had to stay outside' in the &anlieue% 3 *nd although

    this image is !art of the A* of the !lace2

    ' isnt it a little bit anti/!roductive?

    #oing further into history' the ne+t big name that had a vision for $aris was Fe

    orbusier' with his $lan Voisin% onsidering the citys .2 thcentury structures un)t

    for the challenges of ,= thcentury life' his !ro!osition involved the demolition of

    most of the old city centre and the rise of an entire new city' with >= storey

    skyscra!ers among large green areas and big highways connecting $aris to Drances

    !rovinces' at the same time !romoting the segregation of areas according to their

    function%.=

    &ut instead of going with Fe orbusiers !lan' the city was !reserved' so in order to

    solve the increasing housing !roblems' large/scale housing !ro"ects from the >=sand 4=s 1#rands :nsembles5% Highly de!endent on su!!lies from $aris and the

    little villages in the area' they were "ust large dormitory neighbourhoods which'

    because of their s!atial disconnection' made their inhabitants 1mostly immigrants5

    feel as if they were at the edge of society% ..

    be free to decide whether to take !ublic trans!ort' or !rivate trans!ort

    more as a barrier' but as an o!!ortunity to be used for new !arks that would

    surround the !eri!heries and also to be !aid with the leverage coming from

    all the investments in new housing along it%

    Having a s!ace for the technologies and sciences not only around $aris 1like

    in the current situation5' but maybe closer to its center' the concentration

    hel!ing maybe with the innovation because it would be a !lace to gather' a

    very clear address in $aris%g*lthough an interesting idea in itself' the image

    shows a high/rise building sur!assing the height of the :iCel
